  1. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Lammonby c Pope b Topley 8 (Surrey v Somerset 12-1)

Reece Topley has replaced Sam Curran at The Oval and strikes the first blow for Surrey at the end of his second over.

Tom Lammonby pushes tentatively forward and an edge flies to second slip where England's Ollie Pope takes a comfortable catch.

    Another poor start by Somerset.

  2. Postpublished at 11:35 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Lancs v Glos 19-0

A challenging half an hour for Gloucestershire at Old Trafford but the openers are intact for the moment.

Both Hasan Ali and James Anderson have beaten the bat but both perhaps not as accurate as they might have liked so far against two left-handers.

Marcus Harris' straight drive for three off Anderson the pick of the strokes so far.

  3. Division Two round-uppublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Nottinghamshire are still waiting for their first wicket at the Riverside after putting Durham in. The home side are 16-0 after six overs.

Shaheen Afridi has made a tidy start to his spell with Middlesex, sending down his opening four overs at a cost of weight runs. Glamorgan are 11-1.

Ed Pollock has made a positive start for Worcestershire against Sussex. He has 31 from 32 balls, with seven fours, and they are 37-0 in the seventh over.

It is less frantic at Grace Road where Leicestershire are 17-0 in the eighth, having chosen to bat first against Derbyshire.

  4. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Crawley c Brown b Abbas 7 (Kent 13-1 v Hampshire)

    How odd.

Zak Crawley takes two steps down the pitch to Mohammad Abbas, but the ball leaves him off the seam and Ben Brown takes a straightforward edge.

No idea what the footwork was for - perhaps the England batsman is hoping to be noticed by Strictly Come Dancing.

  5. Postpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Kent 13-0 v Hampshire

A boundary each for the Kent openers as Ben Compton square cuts Mohammad Abbas and Zak Crawley forces Keith Berker away through the covers off the back foot. Seven overs have been bowled so far.

  6. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Hill c McManus b Berg 4 (Northants v Yorks 15-2)

Three deliveries later and Gareth Berg strikes again.

Just a length delivery outside off and George Hill has needlessly flirted with it and edged behind.

A swat of the bat into the air as Hill marches off.

    Browne c Burgess b OHD 2 (Warwickshire v Essex 6-1

    Oliver Hannon-DalbyImage source, Rex Features

Sir Alastair Cook has the game's first boundary at Edgbaston, pushed away backward of point off Oliver Hannon-Dalby.

No effort involved, just excellent timing.

The seam bowler strikes a first blow for the champions in his next over, though, as Nick Browne goes for a drive and keeper Michael Burgess takes the catch, tumbling to his left.

  8. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Lyth c Young b Berg 2 (Northants v Yorks 3-1)

Yorkshire chose to bat first at Wantage Road but have lost Adam Lyth in just the fourth over.

A pinch of movement away from Gareth Berg to find the outside edge and a wonderful catch at second slip, one-handed diving low to his right, from New Zealander Will Young on debut.

  9. Postpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Lancs v Glos 2-0

Jimmy Anderson back playing for the first time since the Sydney Test...

    ...and begins with a wide!

Could be a good run of Championship games to come for Anderson.

Gloucestershire have chosen to bat and face a stiff task against Anderson and Hasan Ali, with Saqib Mahmood also playing here after impressing in the West Indies.

The toss can sometimes befuddle at Old Trafford with Lancs often preferring to bowl first.

The Glosters have avoided facing Matt Parkinson in the final innings, with their own spinner Zafar Gohar to try and utilise. But they will need enough runs before then.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:09 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Salter c Stoneman b TRJ 0 (Glamorgan 2-1 v Middlesex)

And the first wicket of the day goes at.......Sophia Gardens, where Andrew Slater obligingly clips a ball from Toby Roland-Jones to square leg.

Marnus Labuschagne is in the middle now to take on Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi, who is making his Middlesex debut.

    Surrey 0-0 v Somerset

Some might call it a brave decision by Somerset to bat first at the Kia Oval, having failed to reach 200 in an innings so far this season.

Jordan Clark opens up with a maiden for Surrey and Sam Curran takes the new ball at the opposite end. Great to see him back in action in his first match since October last year.

There is no Kemar Roach for Surrey - he has returned to the Caribbean after suffering a hamstring injury.

    Kent 0-0 v Hampshire

Back to business for Kent opener Ben Compton, who plays out a maiden by Mohammad Abbas following his 14 + hours of batting in their last game.

  15. Anderson out to stake Test claimpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    County Championship (play starts 11:00)

    Jimmy AndersonImage source, Rex Features

England start the opening Test of the summer against New Zealand at Lord's on 2 June.

At the moment, the team has no captain or head coach, but Jimmy Anderson is hungry to be in the squad for that match after being overlooked for the tour to the West Indies.

The 39-year-old - with 640 Test wickets - will be looking to stake an early claim in his first county game of the season for Lancashire against Gloucestershire.

And he is joined in the XI by a player who was in the Caribbean with England, Saqib Mahmood, who would probably like nothing more than for both of them to be in the side against the Kiwis.

  16. Brothers on top form for Oval meetingpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Surrey v Somerset (play starts 11:00)

Craig and Jamie OvertonImage source, Getty Images

Even though Jamie Overton left Somerset for Surrey in 2020, it still seems slightly odd to talk about him being on opposite sides to brother Craig.

But that is the situation at The Oval as the two in-form pacemen face other for the first time in a Championship game and both are looking to add to their already healthy haul of wickets in 2022.

Craig had career-best match figures for Somerset last week, but they have lost both games so far without scoring 200 in any innings and will be glad to welcome Tom Banton back from injury.

Surrey lead Division One following a win over Hampshire, due in on small part to Jamie's eight wickets - a performance which has led to him being talked about as an England possible.

  18. Karunaratne makes White Rose debutpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Northamptonshire v Yorkshire (play starts 11:00)

    Dimuth KarunaratneImage source, Getty

Yorkshire made a good start to the season with victory over Gloucestershire and will be boosted by the inclusion of Sri Lanka Test skipper Dimuth Karunaratne for the visit to Wantage Road to take on Northamptonshire.

Today is Karunaratne's 34th birthday but will he have treats in store for Yorkshire followers in his three-match deal with the club?

Northants lost their opening game of the season but have new overseas faces of their own with New Zealand batsman Will Young and Australian pace bowler Matt Kelly set to make their debuts.

  19. Sibley looks to shrug off poor startpublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Warwickshire v Essex (play starts 11:00)

    Dom SibleyImage source, Rex Features

Out of favour with England following 22 Test appearances, Dom Sibley wanted to make a good start to the season with champions Warwickshire.

He didn't manage it as he was out first ball in his only innings of their drawn game against Surrey two weeks ago.

Things can surely only get better for the right-hander, but he finds himself facing an Essex side with such seam bowling riches, they were able to leave Jamie Porter out of their XI as they beat Somerset last week.

Essex, though, were a little fortunate to win that game by one wicket, chasing a target of only 84, and will be looking for a better performance from their batting unit this week.
