    Dan LawrenceImage source, Rex Features

Essex face an uphill battle to avoid defeat by champions Warwickshire with Dan Lawrence unlikely to bat because of injury.

The England batter pulled a hamstring while fielding and head coach Anthony McGrath said: "We haven't been able to get him a scan because the hospitals are very busy so won't find out the severity until we get confirmation from the specialist."

Warwickshire were able to draft in Craig Miles after Liam Norwell was hit on the helmet, but the replacement rule does not apply for other injuries.

Essex need another 217 to make Warwickshire bat again.

We mentioned earlier that as well as being St George's Day, it's the birthday of Shakespeare and Prince Louis.

It is also Record Store Day. Not sure what's on offer this year, but we've just been listening to I Roy's 'Tribute to Michael Holding'.

    Glamorgan 122 & 104-6 v Middlesex 336 (match resumes 11:00)

    John SimpsonImage source, Rex Features

Wicketkeeper John Simpson is looking for Middlesex to finish the job today after his unbeaten century put them in command against Glamorgan.

The Welsh county - who beat Notts at Trent Bridge last week - need another 110 to avoid an innings defeat with only four wickets remaining.

Simpson made 104 not out and told BBC Radio London: "We're in a pretty strong position and I don't think we could have had two better days.

"It is tricky conditions but the boys down the lower end batted beautifully and to get that lead was pretty special."

    Surrey 204-5 v Somerset 337 (match resumes 11:00)

    Peter SiddleImage source, Rex Features

Somerset's Peter Siddle believes the first hour will be crucial to their chances of victory over Surrey at the Oval.

Beaten in three days in their first two games, the Cider Boys are looking for a positive result to kickstart their Championship challenge.

Siddle has taken 2-23 so far in his 200th first-class game, including the wicket of Ben Foakes of 63 after the England keeper was dropped on two.

"The only disappointment for us was letting Foakes off early in his innings," the Australian said. "All our bowlers gave it a good crack and there's a bit in it for us."

  9. Bohannon benefits from 'hard' winterpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    Lancashire 289-3 v Gloucestershire 252 (match resumes at 11:00)

    Josh BohannonImage source, Rex Features

Lancashire batter Josh Bohannon believes hard work done in the winter is paying off after making an unbeaten 142 on day two at Old Trafford.

Bohannon scored 853 Championship runs last summer at an average of 53, earning him a chance with the England Lions squad.

"What I took from being with the England Lions was the intensity of the environment - everything they do on and off the field was something that I really enjoyed," he said.

"One of the things I've learnt to do is to bat a long time...and to come out and do that is a massive reward for myself."

  10. Notts 'buzzing' over James centurypublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    Durham 230 v Nottinghamshire 371-3 (match resumes at 11:00)

    Lyndon JamesImage source, Rex Features

Notts opener Ben Slater believes Lyndon James' maiden hundred will be the "first of many" after the pair shared an unbroken stand of 216 on day two at the Riverside.

They beat the previous Notts record for a third-wicket partnership against Durham - 195 by Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke in 2020.

James will resume on 105 not out and Slater, who has 164, said: "We're buzzing for Lyndon to get his first first-class century. It was special to be at the other end to witness that."

  12. Royal family's youngest cricket fan?published at 10:32 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

As well as St George's Day, it's also a shared birthday for William Shakespeare and Prince Louis - and isn't it great to see the latter with a cricket ball in his hand in photos taken by his mum, the Duchess of Cambridge (you can see the pics here).

We do not know whether any photos exist of the Bard of Avon holding a cricket ball - but no doubt he's happy with the position Warwickshire are in against Essex.

It's St George's Day - but will it be a good one for the five Georges taking part in the current round of Championship games?

Yorkshire's George Hill resumes on three not out for Yorkshire against Northamptonshire, but Lancashire's George Balderson will start the day in the dressing room after being dismissed for five by Gloucestershire.

George Drissell bowled 21 overs without taking a wicket against Notts yesterday, Leicestershire's George Rhodes spent a tough day in the field and George Burrows of Sussex is waiting to bat as they try to avoid the follow-on at Worcester.

Welcome to our coverage of day three. Play starts at 11:00.
