  2. Postpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Sussex 538 v Durham 223 & 328-2

South Africa batter Keegan Petersen and Scott Borthwick are the two new men at the crease for Durham.

Their lead is only 13, but with eight wickets in hand and time running out on a flat pitch, this should still be heading towards a draw.

  3. Postpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Yorkshire 571 v Kent 291 & 245-6

Grant Stewart punches Steven Patterson through the covers for a couple of boundaries in the over.

Kent now trail by 35 runs. Can they get any sort of lead here and take more time out the game?

How often do you see this? In the same over that Alex Lees goes, his partner Sean Dickson is also dismissed.

Dickson tries to cut spinner Mason Crane but gets a nick behind.

He's on his way for a magnificent 186.

    Salter c du Plooy b Lakmal 0 (Glamorgan 1-1 v Derbyshire)

Great start for Derbyshire as Glamorgan lose opener Andrew Salter for a third-ball duck in the first over - to Suranga Lakmal's fourth ball, brilliantly caught by a diving Leus du Plooy at second slip.

New man in to join David Lloyd is Australian run machine Marnus Labuschagne. If the hosts were to nip him out too, then there might be a few butterflies in the visitors' dressing room.

But Lloyd has now quickly responded with three boundaries in an over off Sam Conners.

    Lees c Alsop b Crane 105 (Sussex 538 v Durham 223 & 313-1)

FINALLY Sussex break this huge opening stand.

Alex Lees whacks a full toss from Mason Crane high into the leg side and Tom Alsop clings on.

The partnership, worth 313, ends just one run short of Durham's Championship record for the first wicket.

  8. Hampshire-Lancashire still to get startedpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Hampshire 246 & 344, Lancashire 240 & 9-0

    They remain hopeful at Southampton.

No play so far today but the word from BBC Radio Lancashire's Scott Read is that they have not given up on it yet.

"Hampshire are keen," says Scott. "They're behind on over-rate.

    "Might be a chance after 3 o'clock."

It's in the hands of the weather gods now, not to mention umpires Nick Cook and Rob White.

    Linde lbw b Hill 16 (Yorkshire 571 v Kent 291 & 218-6)

George Hill gets another big wicket at Headingley!

The seamer pins George Linde on the pad and up goes the finger.

Yorkshire need four wickets for victory. Kent require another 62 runs to make the hosts bat again.

opening standpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Sussex 538 v Durham 223 & 301-0

Sean Dickson hits Aaron Beard to the rope, his 24th boundary, and that brings up the 300 partnership with Alex Lees.

The county first-class record of 334 is now well within sight.

Derbyshire declare on 349-3 against Glamorganpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Guest c C Cooke b Salter 138 (Glamorgan 349-3 dec v Derbyshire)

Brooke Guest is finally gone for 138, to give Glamorgan their third wicket of the innings and first of the day.

And it triggers a Derbyshire declaration, leaving Glamorgan a highly unlikely 331 to win.

All three wickets have been caught behind by Glamorgan wicketkeeper Chris Cooke - this one a first for spinner Andrew Salter, who gets his man taken down the leg side.

Guest's stand with Wayne Madsen, who made 135, amounted in the end to 266.

  12. Postpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Northants 390, Essex 193 & 253-5

Paul Walter moves to 89 and Essex's second-innings lead climbs to 56.

But we understand that there is rain in the air, the clouds are building up and umpires Nigel Llong and Tom Lungley have been casting a few looks skywards.

  13. Postpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Yorkshire 571 v Kent 291 & 209-5

This could be the key partnership for Kent.

Ollie Robinson and George Linde batted really well before lunch to see out a tricky few overs but they'll need to stick around for much longer with their side still 71 behind.

Gloucestershire (443-2) drew with Surrey (603)

With the covers still on at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol, and the game nailed on for a draw, play has been abandoned.

Gloucestershire take 15 points, Divison One leaders Surrey get 11.

  16. Joe Root next up for Essex . . .published at 13:34 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Northants 390, Essex 193, 233-5

This Essex-Northants game is already starting to wind down to a draw, unless the visiting attack can quickly summon up some magic after lunch.

Essex now lead by 36 runs with five wickets remaining. And the chances of a positive result are receding. But there is at least something to look forward to a bit more for Essex's next game, starting at home to Yorkshire on Thursday.

The Radio Essex commentary team have revealed that Joe Root will play for Yorkshire - to make his first County Championship appearance of the season to get some red-ball practice ahead of the start of the New Zealand Test series starting at Lord's on 6 June.

That means, rather neatly, that Root's first game as 'former England captain' will pitch him up against another former England captain, Sir Alastair Cook, the man he succeeded as England skipper five years ago.

Of Root's 52 first-class appearances for Yorkshire, this will be only his 20th since making his England debut in December 2012.

  18. 'Within 30 runs of record'published at 13:16 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Sussex 538 v Durham 223 & 284-0

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

Another excellent session for Durham, who baring a very unlikely batting collapse will comfortably secure a draw after following-on 315 runs in arrears.

This first-wicket partnership between Alex Lees and Sean Dickson, is now within 30 of the all time opening Durham Championship record.

The only chance came when Alex Lees top edged to Mason Crane at fine-leg, who really should have taken a relatively straight forward catch.

The new ball was taken just before lunch, and provided that is safely negotiated, a draw looks almost certain.

  19. No sign of a declaration at Derbypublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Derbyshire 368 and 287-2, Glamorgan 387

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

Derbyshire’s Brooke Guest is the first wicket-keeper to score two hundreds in a match since Bill Storer in 1896.

Wayne Madsen's second century of the season has helped to take their partnership to 214 - and a lead of 268.

Guest and Madsen batted serenely through the morning session with no alarms, but no apparent intention to press on for a declaration.

Glamorgan are without seamer Timm van der Gugten because of a hamstring injury - and their attack has looked fairly punchless on a good pitch.

Derbyshire could give themselves 60 overs to bowl Glamorgan out, but it seems they don’t have the confidence to press harder for a win.

  20. Lunch at Headingleypublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 1 May 2022

    Yorkshire 571 v Kent 291 & 200-5

Kent pair George Linde and Ollie Robinson showed some good heart to stick around in a tricky 30 minutes before lunch after Ben Compton went.

The visitors still trail by 80 runs at Headingley and Yorkshire will surely be confident of sealing victory in the afternoon.
