Day two of this round of County Championship fixtures has been a day of swings and roundabouts, not least in the weather with Tuesday's roasting heat replaced by bad light and even the odd rain delay on Wednesday.

Division One leaders Surrey produced a superb recovery from 112-7 to 319 thanks to Will Jacks' 150 before Dan Worrall took two wickets early in Essex's second innings to arguably give his side the edge.

Northants were dismissed for 235 but responded by skittling Lancashire for 132 as Jack Price took 5-14 while Hampshire got on top of Gloucestershire, as the other two top-flight matches - at Edgbaston and Taunton - remain firmly in the balance.

In Division Two, there were big scores from Nottinghamshire duo Ben Duckett (241) and Haseeb Hameed (194), Sussex's Cheteshwar Pujara (231) and Leicestershire's Wiaan Mulder (147no) to put those three sides in charge against Derbyshire, Middlesex and Glamorgan respectively.

But, as we've seen today, things can quickly change - so join us again right here tomorrow to see how day three unfolds.

  3. Close of play at Cheltenhampublished at 19:28 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 43-2 v Hampshire 457

That's the final scare for Gloucestershire as Ollie Price and Miles Hammond finish the day on 17 not out and 12 not out respectively.

It was really important they dug in after the loss of openers Marcus Harris and Chris Dent meant the hosts slipped to 17-2.

It was certainly Hampshire's day though as Felix Organ's career-best 118, plus 95 from James Vince and a quickfire 50 from Keith Barker helped them to a commanding first-innings total of 457.

  4. Postpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 43-2 v Hampshire 457

Huge shout for lbw as Liam Dawson squeezes one through Miles Hammond but the umpire says it did not touch the pads and gives four byes as the ball trickles away to the boundary.

There was some swing on that if it didn't touch bat or pad as it flew away at a very strange angle.

  5. Postpublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 39-2 v Hampshire 457

It's mostly dot-ball city at Cheltenham with Gloucestershire in protection mode, although Ollie Price did carve Felix Organ away for a classy boundary.

Just one over left in the day.

  6. Postpublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 32-2 v Hampshire 457

Good response, this, from Gloucestershire pair Ollie Price and Miles Hammond.

Playing the Hampshire spin sensibly, picking off the odd single, Price trying to keep the strike while Hammond offers support.

    Four overs to bat out.

  7. Postpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 25-2 v Hampshire 457

Big appeal for lbw from Felix Organ as Miles Hammond gets his legs in a bit of a muddle but it looked like the ball was going wide of off stump.

  8. Postpublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 25-2 v Hampshire 457

It's a matter of survival for the Gloucestershire batters for the final few overs of the day at Cheltenham.

Having said that, Ollie Price and Miles Hammond have played a couple of tidy strikes to the boundary to make Hampshire aware they are not completely on the defensive.

  9. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Somerset 424 v Yorkshire 167-4

Apologies, all these different start and finish times have messed up my mind.

They've finished at 19:00 BST at Taunton and you'd say Somerset are just about on top.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore has batted really nicely for his 68 not out.

WICKET Harris lbw b Dawson 10published at 18:56 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 17-2 v Hampshire 457

Disaster for Gloucestershire. Marcus Harris is trapped lbw by spinner Liam Dawson and Glos are two down late in the day.

That's both openers gone. Hampshire increasingly adopting the favourites' mantle in this one.

  11. Close of play at Northamptonpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Northants 235 & 25-1 v Lancashire 132

It's taken an hour and 20 minutes but it's finally been decided to curtail play for the day at Wantage Road due to bad light.

The players left the field just after 17:30 BST and have not returned.

It's been a mixed day for both sides but Northants will be the happier, having skittled Lancashire for just 132 to establish a first-innings lead of 103 as Jack White (5-14) took a maiden five-fer.

There was earlier a five-wicket haul for Lancashire debutant Washington Sundar but the visitors have a huge amount of work to do on day three to turn this one around.

  12. Postpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Somerset 424 v Yorkshire 166-4

Four overs to go at Taunton.

    Who's had the better day?

Thumbs up for Somerset, thumbs down for Yorkshire.

  13. Hampshire go for spin citypublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 10-1 v Hampshire 457

With the light and visibility not brilliant, Hampshire turn to spin to eke a few more overs out of the evening session in a bid to claim another Gloucestershire wicket or two.

Liam Dawson and Felix Organ are the men alternating with the ball.

  14. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Warwickshire 225 v Kent 165 & 198-4

An excellent evening session for Kent, who looked in real trouble at 84-3 - but have rebuilt superbly to give themselves a chance against Warwickshire.

Joe Denly is unbeaten on 70, alongside Jordan Cox on 40no, the pair putting on 93 for the fifth wicket.

Sam Hain's 99 helped Warwickshire amass a first-innings lead of 60 but despite a couple of Oliver Hannon-Dalby wickets, Kent have turned things around to lead by 138 with six wickets remaining.

A big morning session to come on Thursday in this one. Could be decisive.

  15. Division Two updatepublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

It's now stumps in all three Division Two matches.

Wiaan Mulder's second successive century has taken Leicestershire to 387-5 against Glamorgan. The South African has 147 not out.

Derbyshire have closed on 164-2 replying to Nottinghamshire's 618-8 declared and Middlesex finished on 103-0 after Sussex made 523.

  16. wicket

WICKET Dent b Abbas 0published at 18:38 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 2-1 v Hampshire 457

The Gloucestershire reply has begun at Cheltenham - but it has not begun well for the hosts.

Only 10 balls in, Chris Dent is trapped lbw by Mohammad Abbas and Glos are 2-1. What a start for the Hampshire attack.

  17. Postpublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Somerset 424 v Yorkshire 155-4

Still eight overs to go tonight at Taunton. It's a key period for both sides. If Somerset can snaffle another wicket they'll be well on top.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Matthew Waite will be desperate to stick it out until the morning for Yorkshire.

  18. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Surrey 319 v Essex 271 & 19-2

Stumps on day two, and what a turnaround it has been from Surrey.

The Division One leaders were 112-7 shortly after lunch, but Will Jacks' destructive unbeaten 150 not out and a couple of late wickets have put them in command.

HAMPSHIRE ALL OUT FOR 457published at 18:23 British Summer Time 20 July 2022

    Abbott c Bracey b Higgins 1 & Fuller b T Price 10

A few minutes ago Hampshire were 445-6 with James Vince eyeing a century and his side probably eyeing a total of 500-plus.

But they have lost their final four wickets for just 12 runs, the departures of Vince and Keith Barker quickly followed by Kyle Abbott, caught behind, and James Fuller, bowled by Tom Price.

They are still in command of this match though thanks to Vince's 95 and opener Felix Organ's career-best 118.

    Surrey 319 v Essex 271 & 16-2

Essex's nightwatchman goes with a regulation nick to second slip off Dan Worrall.

Tom Westley comes in at four with a couple of overs to see out.
