  1. TKC going well at Tauntonpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

    Somerset 424 Yorkshire 180-4

In three previous trips to Taunton, two red-ball innings and two in white ball, Tom Kohler-Cadmore had only previously made 64 runs.

But the Yorkshireman is preparing nicely for life at Taunton next season.

He has already more in this knock than in all his previous trips to the middle. Two more boundaries already this morning to move on to 78. He has not hit a first-class century since 2019.

  2. Old duo keeping it tightpublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 49-2 v Hampshire 457

Keith Barker and Mohammad Abbas have a combined age of 67, but they are such wily Championship performers.

Only five runs given up in half a dozen overs so far. Abbas has conceded one, with Barker the expensive on, coughing up four.

  3. Division Two latestpublished at 11:19 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

Also a wicket in the first over of the day at Grace Road where Harry Swindells was caught behind off Michael Hogan, unable to add to his overnight 52. Leicestershire are now 397-6 against Glamorgan.

While Middlesex's Sam Robson has gone to his 50 at Lord's but opening partner Mark Stoneman is out for 47, LBW to Bradley Currie - a first Championship wicket on debut for the Scotsman. They are 112-1 in reply to Sussex's 523.

  4. Postpublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

    Essex 271 & 24-2, Surrey 319

Quiet start for Essex at The Oval, where the wicket appears to have developed a bit more bounce - at both ends.

    A few awkward moments already!

Just five runs added in four overs as Essex look to wipe out Surrey's narrow 48-run first-innings lead.

  5. wicket

WICKET Young lbw b Bailey 12published at 11:04 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

    Northants 235 & 29-2 v Lancashire 132

The first wicket of the day!

Lancashire really need some this morning to get back into the game after a dreadful show with the bat and Tom Bailey strikes with the fifth ball of the first over.

Will Young had struck the first one for four, but the Northants captain is plumb LBW to this one.

  6. Mammoth day in prospectpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

    Gloucestershire 46-2 v Hampshire 457

After the shortened first day in Cheltenham, there are still more than 200 overs left in this game.

Hampshire have a massive lead and much more bearable conditions for bowling, as they try to turn the screw on struggling Gloucestershire.

Keith Barker, complete with red socks, is opening the bowling.

  7. Yesterday in Division Twopublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

There are only three games going on this week in Division Two.

And there have been some big totals piled up.

Nottinghamshire duo Ben Duckett (241) and Haseeb Hameed (194) broke one of that great Notts cricket family Gunn's many old records as they extended their second-wicket stand to 402 against Derbyshire.

Hameed hit his career-best and Duckett his best score for Notts as they overtook the 398 posted by Arthur Shrewsbury and Billy Gunn, set against Sussex in 1890 at Trent Bridge, as the new county second-wicket record.

India Test player Cheteshwar Pujara also hit a double century, 231 for Sussex against Middlesex at Lord's as his side were eventually bowled out for 531, before the hosts closed untroubled on 103-0.

And Wiaan Mulder (a gent?) will hope that 147 is not his maximum as the South African resumes with Leicestershire on 387-5 against Glamorgan.

  8. Yesterday in Division Onepublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 21 July 2022

Division One leaders Surrey produced a superb recovery from 112-7 to 319 - a lead of 48 over Essex - thanks to a timely 150 from Will Jacks.

Dan Worrall then took two early wickets in the Essex second innings to arguably give his side the edge.

Northants were dismissed for 235 but responded by skittling Lancashire for 132 as 30-year-old Cumbrian discovery Jack Price took 5-14.

New T20 Blast winners Hampshire got right on top of Gloucestershire at Cheltenham.

And the other two top-flight matches - at Edgbaston and Taunton - remain in the balance.

In the furthest advanced game, Kent, if they get the chance, will resume their second innings with a 138-run lead in Birmingham against reigning county champions Warwickshire.

Yorkshire are also four down overnight, in their first innings, against Somerset at Taunton, with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who has signed to play for Somerset next season, 68 not out overnight.

It's day three of the latest round of County Championship matches - and already we've had major meterorological drama this week.

From Tuesday - the hottest day in England since records began - to Wednesday's sultry, murky, overcast craziness.

One match, in Birmingham, being played with the help of the Edgbaston floodlights on all day.

Another, just 50-odd miles away at Northampton, where, because of the early finish on Tuesday, they were due to extend the day's play to take advantage of the cooler conditions, but couldn't because they were off for bad light!!!

And now today . . . rain is forecast.

The covers are on at Edgbaston, with no prospect of play this side of lunch. And it looks like it could be a similar story elsewhere.
