With the Surrey cat away - they're not playing this week - the Hampshire and Lancashire mice must play well if they are to improve their chances of winning the Championship title.

Lancashire started promisingly, thanks to Keaton Jennings' 119, before George Hill took 6-26 as Yorkshire hit back in the Rosses match.

Hampshire had a satisfactory, if rain-interrupted, day against Northants, but the best innings was played by Marcus Harris, who made 159 for Gloucestershire at Taunton.

Division Two leaders Notts are on top against Leicestershire and some intriguing cricket is in prospect on day two. Join us tomorrow from 10:00.

    Notts 201 & 15-0 v Leics 93

So, just the 20 wickets in one day as Ben Slater plays out the final over from Ed Barnes and helps himself to two boundaries.

Leicestershire's attack fully justified Callum Parkinson's decision to put the Division Two leaders in on their home ground - with Chris Wright and Barnes taking three wickets each to bowl them out in 61.3 overs.

But what Leicestershire could do, Notts could do even better and an initial four-wicket burst by Luke Fletcher sparked a collapse which left opener Sam Evans (50 not out) as the only batter to reach double figures.

Notts lead by 123 and will now be confident of a seventh win of the season, which will be another big step towards promotion.

    Notts 201 & 5-0 v Leics 93

Chris Wright, who took 3-26, in the Notts first innings has the new ball as they begin their second.

Ben Slater picks up a single and Haseeb Hameed, with four slips waiting, flicks a leg-stump half-volley to square leg for four.

    One more to come.

  6. wicket

    WICKET Finan b Patterson-White 6published at 18:18 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Notts 201 v Leics 93

We have our 20th wicket of the day at Trent Bridge as Michael Finan offers no stroke to Liam Paterson-White's arm ball and is bowled.

Sam Evans is left on 50 not out - after hitting eight fours in his 71-ball innings - and is the first Leicestershire opener top bat through an entire innings since Iain Sutcliffe did so against Kent in 2002.

Evans' is by no means to lowest score by a Leicestershire player carrying his bat - Cecil Wood made 21 not out against Yorkshire at Dewsbury in 1898.

  7. Close of play at Old Traffordpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Lancashire 272-8 v Yorkshire

And there ends an incredible day of Roses cricket.

For the first two sessions, batting looked easy and Yorkshire looked like they could not buy a wicket.

Yet Lancashire have limped through to the close, just about, after losing seven wickets for 38 after tea.

  8. Close of play at Ageas Bowlpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Hampshire 229-5 v Northamptonshire

Following the three and a half hour rain hold-up earlier in the day, it is bad light which ends play mid-way through a Luke Procter over.

Liam Dawson will resume on 43 not out, and Aneurin Donald on 28 - and second-placed Hampshire will probably be fairly satisfied with the position, having been put in by Will Young.

Felix Organ made 71 before falling to Jack White, who was the pick of the Northants attack with 2-35.

  9. No hat-trickpublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Lancashire 271-8 vYorkshire

Will Williams survives the hat-trick ball as it hits the New Zealander on the thigh pad and the batters scamper a couple.

Great effort from Ben Coad, though.

  10. wicket

WICKET Wright c LPW b Hutton 0published at 18:08 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Notts 201 v Leics 84-9

Chris Wright obligingly clips Brett Hutton to Liam Patterson-White at mid-wicket and we are down to Leicestershire's final pair.

Sam Evans steers the final ball of the over for four and he could become the first Leicestershire opener to carry his bat through an entire Championship innings for 20 years.

He is 46 not out. Will he also manage a half-century? Six overs to go.

  11. wicket

WICKET Bailey c Tattersall b Coad 0published at 18:07 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Lancashire 269-8 v Yorkshire

    Two wickets in two balls!

Tom Bailey gets a thin edge through to the wicketkeeper and Ben Coad has two in two.

An excellent ball first up to the tail-ender.

  12. wicket

WICKET Hartley lbw b Coad 3published at 18:06 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Lancashire 269-7 v Yorkshire

George Hill will not get all ten Lancashire wickets!

Ben Coad gets in on the act as he traps left-hander Tom Hartley in front late in the day.

  13. Close of play at Derbypublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Derbyshire 306 v Durham

Ollie Gibson has Anuj Dal caught behind for 56 and that is all at Derby as the final wicket ends play with seven balls left.

Gibson finished with 2-62 but it was Chris Rushworth and Ben Raine who did the bulk of the damage with three wickets each.

Leus du Plooy (82, Harry Came (78) and Dal rescued Derbyshire from 58-4 and they also take three points from the opening day.

  14. Postpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Hants 227-5 v Northants

Liam Dawson puts Lizaad Williams away through mid-wicket and is 42 not out with 10 overs remaining at the Ageas Bowl.

Partner Aneurin Donald is on 28 and they have added 60 so far for the sixth wicket.

  15. Postpublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Lancashire 267-6 v Yorkshire

George Lavelle sends one down to the boundary at third man for a welcome boundary.

The wicketkeeper is digging in to try and reach the close for his side.

  16. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Somerset v Gloucestershire 320-6

Jack Taylor and Tom Price see out the final over, adding four runs in the process, to end a day which Gloucestershire have mostly dominated after being put in.

Their position is due in large part to Marcus Harris' 159 off 263 balls, which included a six and 17 fours.

The Australian put on 126 with Ben Charlesworth (56) and 125 with Ollie Price (52), but Somerset fought back in the final session, reducing the visitors from 281-2 to 316-6.

  17. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Kent v Essex 327-4

Matt Critchley and Feroze Khushi make it through to stumps to put Essex in a very good position against Kent. Critchley ends on 80 and Khushi 46.

They have put on 106 for the fifth wicket to help the visitors win day one after being asked to bat.

  18. wicket

WICKET Parkinson c Moores b Paterson 1published at 17:55 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Notts 201 v Leics 70-8

It's a procession at Trent Bridge.

That is a great delivery by Dane Paterson which leaves Callum Parkinson off the pitch and Tom Moores takes the catch.

  19. 50 runs

for Anuj Dalpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Derbys 300-9 v Durham

Anuj Dal has only number 11 Sam Conners for company now but goes to 50 off 79 balls with a one-handed drive for four off Ben Raine. It also earns Derbyshire third third batting point. Four overs left.

  20. wicket

WICKET Harris c Gregory b Brooks 159published at 17:51 British Summer Time 5 September 2022

    Somerset v Gloucs 316-6

It looked like Marcus Harris was going to bat through the entire day for Gloucestershire - but now he is gone in the penultimate over.

That was a tired-looking jab at an angled ball from Jack Brooks and Lewis Gregory took a comfortable catch at slip.
