Well, the County Championship has delivered again with yet another exciting instalment.

Essex claimed a three-day one-wicket win over Yorkshire in a match that swung this way and that throughout the day.

Ultimately, Shane Snater's unbeaten 65 got Essex over the line despite former Tykes skipper Steven Patterson's 5-46 for the White Rose, for whom Fin Bean and Ben Coad recorded maiden first-class half-centuries.

Tom Curran and Hashim Amla struck superb centuries for Surrey but the Division One title chasers trail by 127 runs and still need to take five Northants wickets before embarking on their second innings.

At the bottom of the top flight, Somerset took a big step towards retaining their Division One status as an unbeaten 91 from George Bartlett and 87 from skipper Tom Abell guided them to a 300-run lead over fellow strugglers Warwickshire.

That was the cue for another look at the light meter - and it failed the test.
