Just to keep you updated on the title picture, Surrey began the day leading Division One by eight points.

That is now down to seven following Hampshire's successful morning - and they will reduce it to six when they pick up a sixth Kent wicket.

Glamorgan's David Lloyd reached a 79-ball half-century just before the interval by pulling a Leus du Plooy long hop away for the ninth boundary of his innings.

Lloyd has so far put on 68 with Tom Bevan, who is 28 not out in his maiden first-class innings, following six white-ball games earlier in the season.

  3. Ball returns with doublepublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Worcestershire 99-5 v Nottinghamshire - lunch

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Dane Paterson passed 50 first class wickets for the season and Jake Ball marked his return to the red-ball game with a couple as Notts had the better of the morning session at New Road.

Ball’s last Championship cricket was the opening match of last season but after overcoming back and side injuries, he marked his return with the early wickets of Ed Pollock and Azhar Ali.

Paterson reached 50 for the second season running, by pinning Jake Libby lbw and rounded off the session by removing Ed Barnard.

Notts skipper Steven Mullaney won the toss and made a further impression by having Jack Haynes caught behind in his first over.

A draw would guarantee the visitors one of the two promotion berths, whilst victory would sew up the Second Division title.

  4. Durham exploit helpful conditionspublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Durham v Sussex 47-3 - lunch

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

A good toss for Durham to win on an overcast morning with the floodlights on and drizzle in the air, which caused a brief interruption to play.

As well as Durham have exploited the helpful conditions, Sussex haven’t helped themselves, with skipper Tom Haines particularly culpable, playing a poor shot outside of the off stump to be caught behind for a duck in just the fourth over of the morning.

Matty Potts and Ben Raine have taken the wickets between them, and with condition expected to remain bowler friendly, those two are likely to bowl plenty more overs today

Alistair Orr has held the innings together, and whilst riding his luck at times has looked to punish anything overpitched and take the attack to Durham.

  5. Tough morning for Somersetpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Somerset 55-1 v Northants - lunch

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

"A good toss to lose that would have been," said one of the ex-Somerset cricketers who are gathered here for their annual reunion. "We could have been four down by now".

And it has indeed been hard work for the Somerset batters against an accurate, hard-working Northants seam attack on a not entirely straightforward pitch.

Tom Lammonby was put down twice in the slips, Imam ul-Haq was caught there off one that left him sharply just when he seemed to be getting going, and a nervous-looking Tom Abell has survived two close lbw calls.

Somerset may have only lost one wicket but Northants are still well in this.

  6. Spin will be king at Chelmsfordpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Essex v Lancashire 83-6 - lunch

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire commentator

Can Lancashire get a score on the board? Even 150 might keep them in the game.

They've got three spinners in their team, with the inclusion of both Matt Parkinson and Tom Hartley to help out Luke Wells and we've already seen three wickets fall to spin this morning.

Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat first, it might look like a mistake now, but surely it was the only option on a pitch which perhaps is unlikely to improve. It's offered bounce and turn bringing but the seamers and spinners into play.

  8. Lunch at Tauntonpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Somerset 55-1 v Northants

Tom Lammonby plays out a Rob Keogh maiden to end the morning at Taunton and it has been hard work for Somerset against an accurate Northants attack after choosing to bat first.

Jack White claimed the only wicket to fall, with Imam ul-Haq caught in the slips for 25 with the score on 49.

Lammonby is 23 not out, having faced 101 deliveries in the session and been dropped twice, and Tom Abell has a single.

  9. Lunch at The Ageas Bowlpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Hampshire v Kent 35-5

    Very much Hampshire's morning.

Ben Compton has battled to 18 not out, but no-one has been able to stay with him.

The hosts look well set for a big win here.

  10. Lunch at Bristolpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Warwks 73-3 v Gloucs

A good session for the hosts overall, but they'll feel they should have had one more after a couple of close calls for LBW and a dropped catch.

Sibley survives the session unbeaten on 35 and Will Rohdes has four.

  11. wicket

WICKET Barnard c Montgomery b Patersonpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Worcs 99-5 v Notts

The Pears go to lunch in bad shape with their fifth wicket falling to the last ball of the morning session.

Barnard plays a loose shot outside off stump off Paterson and edges the ball low to second slip.

    Notts have a huge advantage.

  12. Lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Essex v Lancs 83-6

And with that wicket, the players head into the pavilion for a spot of lunch.

  13. wicket

WICKET Patel c TKC b Coad 41published at 12:30 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Surrey 82-3 v Yorkshire

    Ben CoadImage source, Rex Features

The morning session ends with a wicket at the Oval as Ryan Patel edges Ben Coad to Tom Kohler-Cadmore at first slip.

Patel hit seven fours in his 82-ball knock but it will be Yorkshire who are the happier side at lunch, having earned their first bowling point after winning the toss and asking the Division One leaders to bat.

Coad has 2-10 from his 8.2 overs so far and it is likely to be Ben Foakes who joins Ollie Pope - 21 not out - when play resumes.

  14. wicket

WICKET Balderson lbw Harmer 4published at 12:30 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Essex v Lancs 83-6

Right on the stroke of lunch, Simon Harmer has a third.

George Balderson leaves a straight one, and is duly given out LBW.

    Another questionable choice of shot.

  15. Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Surrey 81-2 v Yorkshire

Yorkshire call up George Hill for his first bowl of the morning.

Decent start - just two runs from it.

  16. Postpublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Worcs 95-4 v Notts

Steady rebuilding phase for the Pears, who have put on 25 for the 5th wicket in 10 overs.

Mullaney is bowling a good line just outside off and D'Oliveira is defending.

  17. Postpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Gloucs v Warwks 69-3

Ollie Price has a huge appeal for LBW turned down.

On replay the ball looks to have struck Sibley's knee roll outside the line of off stump.

Spin at both ends now - as Zafar is into his 9th over and is driven to backward point by Sibley for two.

  18. Postpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Worcs 92-4 v Notts

Ed Barnard picks up his first boundary with an edged drive off Hutton wide of the slips for four.

He's in block mode against Mullaney at the other end though.

  19. wicket

WICKET Croft c Cook b Harmerpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Essex v Lancs 71-5

    Simon HarmerImage source, Rex Features

    This is a bizarre dismissal.

Steven Croft looks to reverse sweep Simon Harmer, but changes his mind mid-shot. He gets himself in a horrible tangle and can only deflect one to Alistair Cook at slip.

Cook and Harmer have enormous grins on their faces.

  20. Positive start by Popepublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Surrey 76-2 v Yorkshire

Ollie Pope chops Jordan Thompson past the slips for four.

The England batter's confidence is underlined as he flicks aerially into the gap at mid-wicket for four more.

Has he done for this over? No. Thompson is short and wide and Pope cuts to the point boundary to move on to 18.
