Summary

  • Final round of 2022 County Championship season

  • One of Kent, Yorkshire & Warwickshire to be relegated from Div One

  • Surrey crowned champions last week

  • Promotion from Div Two between Notts, Middlesex and Glamorgan

  1. Spin at Old Traffordpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Lancashire 33-0 v Surrey

Serene progress for Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings in the first ten overs at Old Trafford.

Surrey captain Rory Burns responds by throwing the ball to left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty, who is in the side this week in place of Australian Dan Worrall.

This is Moriarty's first appearance of the season - player number 22 used by Surrey and their strength in depth has been a huge reason for their success.

  2. Glam to bat at Hovepublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Sussex v Glam

Not often have Glamorgan been among the promotion race.

    Can this be their week?

It's (potentially) a good start, winning the toss and choosing to bat.

    They begin at 11:30.

  3. Postpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Notts 19-0 v Durham

Notts need only a good-sized draw to win Division Two so understandably, the Trent Bridge groundstaff have tweezered out every last blade of grass from the pitch.

The home side also carry a far greater spin threat so no problem if it gets a little dry.

Winning the toss was also part of the plan and Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed have negotiated the opening 10 overs.

Slater has punched, edged and glanced three boundaries so far.

  4. Covers still on at Edgbastonpublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Warwickshire v Hampshire (start delayed)

The covers are still on at Edgbaston, news which will not have gone unnoticed by followers of Kent and Yorkshire.

Remember, Warwickshire have to win to try and overhaul one of those two sides. The Bears will be itching to get out of the dressing room and get playing.

Andrew Bevan: It must be a first, every domestic trophy this season will be awarded at the end of a Lancs game but Lancs won't collect any of them!

  6. wicket

    WICKET Libby lbw b Roland-Jones 4published at 10:53 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Worcs 4-2 v Middx

A second early wicket for Middlesex.

This time it's Toby Roland-Jones with a full delivery that nips in from a full length.

Jake Libby is a little slow to get forward, is beaten on the inside edge and looks gone.

Only thing that might have saved him was if it was doing too much but certainly to the naked eye it appeared out.

  7. Patterson on for Fisherpublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Yorkshire v Gloucestershire 14-0

Matthew Fisher's opening spell lasts just two overs before Steve Patterson is brought on.

It will be interesting to know how the 38-year-old is feeling as the former captain plays his final game for Yorkshire.

  8. Bit different from Chelmsfordpublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Lancashire 15-0 v Surrey

Luke Wells launches into a booming drive off Jordan Clark to bring up the first boundary of the day at Old Trafford.

With the sun out (for now), things are a bit more straightforward for the Lancashire batters than last week at Chelmsford.

Then they were all out for 131 and 73, yet still managed to beat Essex by 38 runs just after lunch on day two.

  9. 11:30 BST start at Hovepublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Sussex v Glam

Some morning rain at Hove so play delayed for an hour.

We've got time for a little stroll along the prom.

  10. wicket

WICKET Pollock c Simpson b Murtagh 0published at 10:38 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Worcs 0-1 v Middx

Quite literally, the perfect start for Middlesex having won the toss.

Tim Murtagh onto a good area first ball of the innings and a bit of bounce surprises Ed Pollock and takes a thin edge behind.

A diamond duck for Pollock and he'll be praying for another go in the second innings - not how you want to head off into the winter.

  11. Fisher has the ballpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Yorkshire v Gloucestershire 3-0

There is warm applause from the Headingley crowd as Matthew FIsher is thrown the ball for the second over of the innings.

Fisher had match figures of 5-93 in that six-wicket win in Bristol in April but has not played since because of a back injury.

He gives up just a single to Gloucestershire opener Ben Charlesworth from his first six balls.

  13. Main event has become sideshowpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Lancashire 0-0 v Surrey

Lancashire v SurreyImage source, BBC Sport

The TV cameras are here along with the County Championship trophy, but in terms of relevance, the game at Old Trafford is a bit of a sideshow this week.

Surrey wrapped up their 21st title on Thursday with a 10-wicket win over Yorkshire at The Oval after nearest challengers Hampshire suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Kent.

So what should have been a thrilling visit to third-placed Lancashire as a title decider carries no real weight. As such, England duo Ben Foakes and Ollie Pope are rested with the real work having been done.

But the champions have to go through the process of this final four-day game of 2022 before they can get their hands on the trophy.

    Division Two promotion race

Division Two leaders Nottinghamshire need just seven points from their game against Durham at Trent Bridge to guarantee promotion to Division One.

Second-placed Middlesex hold a nine-point advantage over Glamorgan in third so it looks to be a straight shoot out between those two sides for the one remaining promotion place.

Middlesex visit Worcestershire and Glamorgan are at Sussex.

We'll be keeping a close eye on all three matches.

  15. Yorkshire look for get-out-of-jail cardpublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Yorkshire v Gloucestershire (10.30BST)

It has been a challenging summer for Yorkshire and they still have work to do to make certain of playing Division One cricket next summer.

With one win from 13 matches, they begin this final round of games 15 points above Warwickshire, so know that a draw with a couple of bonus points would be enough.

However, that sole victory was back in April, albeit against this week's opponents, already relegated Gloucestershire. A word of warning though for the White Rose - Warwickshire saw their game against Glos last week as their chance to pull out of the bottom two and they lost.

Joe Root is playing golf up in Scotland, Harry Brook is with England in Pakistan but there are last games in Yorkshire colours for Steve Patterson and Tom Kohler-Cadmore.

There is big news, though, in the return of England seamer Matthew Fisher, who has not played since that win in Bristol in April.

  16. Kent and England need Crawley runspublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Kent v Somerset (10.30 BST)

    Zak CrawleyImage source, Rex Features

With their Division One status very much under threat, Kent can call upon the services of Zak Crawley for their season-finale at Canterbury.

Crawley's last knock was his 69 not out in England's series victory over South Africa at The Oval a fortnight ago.

However, it has not been a vintage summer for the England opener at county level. He has only managed three fifties, with a best of 84 against Northants in May, and an average of just over 24.

Kent would love a big performance from him at the top of the order, while England would love a confidence-booster ahead of the Tests in Pakistan in December.

  17. Bears keen to escape the champions' fallpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Warwickshire v Hampshire (10:30 BST)

Warwickshire start this week bidding to avoid becoming the fifth side to be relegated just a year after winning the County Championship.

The 2021 county champions are 14 points behind Kent and 15 behind Yorkshire.

With only a possible 24 points to play for, they have to win - and hope that both Kent and Yorkshire lose.

Even then, Mark Robinson's men might not be safe, depending on what each of the three sides gain from first-innings bonus points.

After the switch to two-division cricket in 2000, Yorkshire were the first to suffer the fate in 2002, but it has also happened to Notts (2006), Lancashire (2012) and most recently Middlesex in 2017.

Well, that flew by didn't it?

Somehow we've arrived at the final week of the domestic cricket season and there's a huge amount on the line.

Notts, Middlesex and Glamorgan are battling for the two promotion places to Division One.

One of Warwickshire, Kent or Yorkshire will join Gloucestershire in dropping down to Division Two next season.
