A lovely shot from Ibrahim Zadran as he takes a little shimmy down the pitch towards Ben Stokes and thrashes it through the covers for four.

Real authority in that. He's played nicely for his 28 so far, and at just 20 years old (cry) looks like a very good prospect for Afghanistan.

But it's halfway through the innings and they're going to need a few more of those boundaries to get to a competitive score.

    Maybe not.

Adil Rashid races through an over rapidly and no boundary from it.

Just two wickets down, you'd think Afghanistan will start to take a few more risks soon.

First over of spin for England as Adil Rashid comes into the attack.

Afghanistan will be much more confident against the spin so is this their chance to go for it? 42 from eight overs is not a great platform for them.

Just the faintest of deflections. Curran slightly lost his line and four was picked up.

  5. Afg 42-2published at 8 overs

A desperately needed boundary for Afghanistan as Sam Curran strays down the leg side and Usman Ghani effortlessly clips it off his hips for four.

  6. Afg 37-2published at 7 overs

It's not getting any easier for Afghanistan.

England have been on it from ball one and Hazratullah Zazai's painful seven from 17 balls showed that.

Liam Livingstone is fielding in front of the loudest section of England fans. They’ve just given him a hero’s reception as he returned to his position.

Livingstone has dived full length and caught that. It's a brilliant piece of cricket.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Liam Livingstone! An absolute worldie.

Hazratullah Zazi was getting tied down, struggling to get the ball away. He takes a wild swipe at a wide ball from Stokes that was, in fairness, asking to be hit to the boundary.

He connects well but Liam Livingstone sprints and dives full stretch at deep point to pluck the ball out of the air and keeps hold of it as he hits the ground.

Big hugs all round, a great piece of work.

Ibrahim could have been long gone. I think Stokes should have really gotten behind the stumps. Little things like that can change games.

  11. Afg 35-1published at 6.1 overs

    The first mistake from England.

A mix-up between the batters leaves Ibrahim stranded halfway down the pitch and Moeen Ali has plenty of time to get the ball back to the bowler and execute a run out.

He goes for the direct hit instead with Ben Stokes not yet back to the stumps and misses, the batter eventually getting home safely.

I think the England bowlers have been excellent. They've obviously planned well.

What happens when you take the slip out?

The ball flies past the keeper for four, of course. A lovely delivery from Chris Woakes finds the outside edge but runs away for four past the outstretched hand of Jos Buttler.

Ibrahim gets lucky, but that still concludes a very good opening powerplay for England.

Shall I let you into a little secret before he goes on air on TMS?

Aggers unpacked his suitcase earlier this week and realised he hadn’t packed any underpants or socks…

Mark Wood continued his fine form, taking the only wicket of the game so far. He reached up to 94mph in his first over.

    As you do.

It's been quite a nervous start from Afghanistan. They've played within themselves. They should really take it to England and put pressure on them.

  17. Afg 27-1published at 5 overs

Great recovery from Mark Wood, zipping the ball ferociously past the outside edge.

There's been the occasional outstanding shot from Afghanistan's batters but not much in between. Feels like they could go for it a bit more, try and keep rotating the strike. England's bowlers have easily settled into their rhythm.

That was almost the identical ball from the previous over from Wood. This time Ibrahim was ready and the extra pace takes it over the boundary.

Shot! This is sometimes the danger of extra pace.

Mark Wood drops a bouncer and Ibrahim Zadran hooks it high over fine leg for another six. A lovely shot and a brave one - I can imagine it's not that fun having the ball up around your nose at 90mph.

There's the extra bit of room he's been looking for. He hasn't had any of that line so far.
