This is a really tough passage for South Africa with 12 overs to play until the end of the day. They want to score runs but they cannot afford to get out as we head into tomorrow.

  2. SA 44-1published at 18 overs

The rain appears to have stopped but it's still gloomy out there, the lights are on and batting looks uncomfortable.

England definitely know this. They are buzzing.

I like Wong going straight at Wolvaardt. It's all about making those South African batters play at everything in this gloomy night session and bringing in every chance of a dismissal.

  4. SA 43-1published at 17 overs

Wong bowls a probing over that concedes just a single, and does well to make Wolvaardt play.

She was bowled going for her favourite drives in the first innings so it seems like Wong is trying to replicate that.

It's dark and gloomy in Taunton, you're a South African batter trying to survive - and just to add to your woes, England have introduced their fastest bowler Issy Wong. Just what you want.

  6. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

Having just chased that ball to the boundary, Issy Wong has to come on and bowl.

She looks fine about it, though. Oh to be that young.

England won't care if they're getting wet if it means they get one more South African wicket tonight. Those batters would have wanted to lock themselves in the dressing room and not come out to bat so England will be really excited if they can get one before close.

The umpires would have been knocking on the door and they'll have wanted to hide and pretend no one was home!

  8. SA 42-1published at 16 overs

Kate Cross beats Lara Goodall twice with absolute beauties that beat her all ends up. Amy Jones looks to the heavens, incredulous that neither delivery could take a wicket.

Goodall responds with consecutive glorious straight drives back past the bowler, the first going for four and the second just hauled in by Issy Wong.

Bell's bowled really nicely. She took the new ball in the first innings which is what you dream of on debut. She's looked every bit the part, has been threatening and beaten both edges. She's causing problems with the ball moving under these lights.

  10. SA 35-1published at 15 overs

It's definitely raining now. More than drizzle, I'd say.

The ground staff are poised ...

    Hey, guess what?

    It's raining.

Tammy Beaumont loves a bit of a chirp. It gets her going. She'll certainly be having a few words with Lara Goodall out here.

  13. SA 34-1published at 14 overs

Kate Cross continues at the other end and there are cries of a chance as Lara Goodall drops the ball close to Tammy Beaumont at short leg.

The batter follows it with a lovely punch down the ground for three - it looked like a certain boundary but the outfield is clearly so wet the ball just plugs in the grass.

Survival is a dangerous mindset to get into. I'd like to see these batters be positive and put some pressure on these England bowlers. Just trying to stay there is never easy.

Wolvaardt's job this evening is not about scoring runs. It's about making sure she walks off the pitch tonight with her wicket intact.

  16. SA 29-1published at 13 overs

Wolvaardt takes the first runs of the 'session', though not convincingly as she plays a loose drive at Bell that flies off the outside edge.

There will have been a lot of energy in the changing room after a long wait. They've now got a good hour to make a dent into this South African batting line-up.

  18. SA 27-1published at 12.2 overs

Lauren Bell bowled one ball before the rain delay so she'll start proceedings by completing the over.

She starts with a dot ball to Laura Wolvaardt, solidly defending on the back foot.
