The England players go through some high leg kicks and twisty type movements on the outfield to try and shake themselves back into cricket mode.

And in the most typical British summer style, just as we're about to get playing again, the prospect of more rain is already being discussed.

South Africa will have to switch on pretty quickly but it is a period that England will be relishing.

    This is magnificent news.

  4. Play to restart at 18:30 BSTpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

    There will be cricket!

13 overs to be bowled. That was a long wait.

  5. Postpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

The umpires have just been interviewed on the TV and confirm that they need to be back playing before 19:00 BST with the possibility of continuing until 19:30 BST. "The players' safety is paramount," was the overriding message from Sue Redfern.

All hope is not lost then.

  6. Pitch inspection at 18:15 BSTpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

Well, that's the first prediction I've got right for a while. Perhaps not the hardest thing to call given we've had approximately 15,709 inspections so far today though.

We'll see what comes of this one.

  7. Postpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

The umpires are chatting to the captains now so we should have news for you soon, one way or another. I'm going back on what I said before and predicting another inspection, I can't get enough of them!

  8. Inspection underwaypublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

The rain has stopped but there is one particular area of damp on the square that is being given a lot of attention. The umps don't look too happy.

We await word on whether or not we'll see more cricket today.

  10. Pitch inspection at 17:50 BSTpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

We have news! There will be another pitch inspection in 20 minutes. You'd have to imagine that will be the last one of the day. Either it'll be a quick restart or the umpires will call it.

  11. rain stops play

    What's going on?published at 17:23 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

If you're holding on for the outcome from the pitch inspection then join the club! Rain did return briefly which may have delayed things further but word is that things have brightened up a tad.

Is it too late? We just don't know! All that is left to do now is wait and hope someone, somewhere will update us eventually. When we know, you'll know.

Today's weather is the Yin to yesterday's Yang. We were lucky yesterday but today we've been well and truly hit.

  13. Inspection at 17:10 BSTpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

Hello again! We have news from Taunton. The rain has stopped - for now, at least - and the umpires are going to take a look in around 20 minutes.

  14. Postpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

OK then, the rain is showing no sign of stopping anytime soon and the prospects of getting more play are exactly as bleak as the current conditions at Taunton.

After a very strenuous 8.1 overs of cricket in the last couple of hours, I'm going to take a well-earned break. We'll be back with any news from Taunton as soon as we get it.

There's a pub quiz in downtown Taunton and we can draw on a range of knowledge and ages from the TMS team.

This does potentially leave us with a chance of a really good finish tomorrow. I thought South Africa might have been overwhelmed by the bowlers today so we could have had a result had it remained dry.

They were under pressure in the first innings and would have struggled without Kapp and England would have fancied their chances today at winning or leaving themselves with a pretty easy chase.

We can hear the rain and it's not getting any lighter...

  18. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 29 June 2022

That stat from Phil seems like a fairly good argument for five-day Tests...? That said, England may have backed themselves to have got this one won in four had it not been for the rain.

The last women's Test that ended in a positive result was when Australia beat England in Canterbury in 2019. Ellyse Perry had a pretty good day out there...

Since 1979 England have played 32 Tests at home, drawn 24, lost six and won just two.

England will still feel like they can force a result tomorrow if we can get as many overs in tomorrow. They've got the potential and the attack but it's just a case of taking those wickets tomorrow if they can get enough of a go at the South African batters.
