Holes out to long on. A frustrating innings for the England Test captain comes to an end.

He advances to Marcus Stoinis and tries to hit over long on. The timing wasn't quite there, though, and David Warner takes a simple chance a yard or two in from the boundary cushion.

  2. Eng 165-1published at 14.3 overs

Stokes has not been able to really break the shackles so far but he does have his first boundary.

It's a big swing leg side, the ball comes off the outside edge but it is fine of short third and runs away.

I asked before the start of the game whether Hales had the chance to cement his place in the XI for the T20 World Cup.

With six overs left in this innings, it is hard to think - as impressive as Phil Salt was in Pakistan - that he hasn't just done so.

Alex Hales is really showing his class here. We know he's a great T20 cricketer having plied his trade all round the world. Back in an England shirt just before the World Cup he's certainly putting his best foot forward.

  6. Eng 159-1published at 13.5 overs

Stokes has a chance to gather himself as Hales continues to savage the Australia attack!

Two boundaries on the trot take him into the 80s. The first is up and over mid-off before the next is swung leg side, one bounce and over the rope.

Fortunately for Ben Stokes it was a slower ball from Daniel Sams which has hit him. If that's at 140kph he is in real strife.

  8. ouch!

    Eng 150-1published at 13.2 overs

That is going to hurt. Ben Stokes is down on one knee and trying to reverse-sweep seamer Daniel Sams.

He misses and the ball thuds into the grille of his helmet. Fortunately, the ball came off his arm to take some of the pace off it. And it was a slower ball.

Still, it looked a nasty one so it's good to see him get the OK to continue from the physio.

  9. dropped catch

Another chance goes begging for Australia! Ben Stokes chips the ball back down the ground off Sams, Richardson is going back from mid-on but can only get one hand to it and the ball goes to ground.

The Buttler drop proved costly. Don't rule out this one being similarly costly for the Aussies.

That's a great shot from Alex Hales. A better swing from him, too. There were a few balls in the middle where he tried to overhit them and he just shuffled across nicely and hit through the line of the ball. Another four off Cameron Green.

  11. Eng 148-1published at 13 overs

Green does at least manage to end the over with a dot ball, deceiving Hales with a slower ball.

However, with seven overs remaining, England are on course for a big, big total. They'll have their eyes on something well past 200.

It's been a tough day for Cameron Green. Jos Buttler took him for four fours off his first over and it's not much better for him, or the rest of the Australia bowlers for that matter.

  13. Eng 148-1published at 12.5 overs

    Stokes 1, Hales 75

Wide half-volley and Hales is not missing out. Front leg out of the way and he smears the ball over extra cover for yet another boundary.

Dismissive stuff from the England opener.

  14. Eng 144-1published at 12.4 overs

Green follows up a wide with a beamer that Hales just manages to get himself clear of. No-ball, free hit...

...and Hales swings it into the leg side for four. He is still going strong.

  15. Eng 138-1published at 12.3 overs

That's more like it from Hales. Not trying to force it.

Green goes short, it's a touch wide as well as Hales times it beautifully, over backward point for four. Crisis over.

  16. Eng 134-1published at 12.2 overs

It's four dot balls in a row now as Green beats Hales twice in a row to start his over.

Hales nearly swings himself off his feet trying to go after the second of them.

James Payne: Jos Buttler is a freak of nature in white-ball cricket. So, so good.

It's already been long day for the Aussie boys and they have only been out there for 12 overs or so! England are going to take the game on, and the luck tends to go your way when you do from this position.

  19. Eng 134-1published at 12 overs

Stokes is off the mark with a single guided to third and after Hales gives him the strike back, Ellis ends a good over with a couple of dot balls.

The seamer has been the pick of the Australia bowlers - and by some way so far.

An extraordinary innings from Jos Buttler. Here comes Ben Stokes - there's not much respite for the Australian bowlers.
