Away from England, there are also four debutants for Pakistan in Saud Shakeel, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Ali and Zahid Mehmood.

Judging from what everyone's saying about the pitch, I have a feeling they'll be spending the entirety of their first day of Test cricket in the field. Fun.

Well, after a bit of a rollercoaster build-up, we've now got two Test debutants for England in Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks.

We've seen what Livingstone can do in T20 cricket in particular, but Jacks is rather more established in red-ball cricket. Saying that, he hit 84 off 48 balls in the warm-up match, so it's fair to say he is ready for 'Bazball'.

You can read all about Will Jacks from Ciaran McCarthy's piece here.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam: "We would have batted first but we will try to do our best.

"It looks like a good wicket and I think the first hour and a half will help the fast bowlers.

"Our team is three fast bowler and one spinner."

England captain Ben Stokes on Sky Sports: "In the subcontinent you always want to make first use of the pitch.

"We've had some illness going round but we were really excited to get started.

"It's not been ideal obviously, to start our tour like this, but hopefully we'll be fine.

"The wicket looks like it's going to play quite nicely, so hopefully we can put on a big score. Will Jacks is coming in for his debut because Ben Foakes unfortunately isn't feeling right, Ollie Pope is going to keep wicket."

  8. England win the toss and bat firstpublished at 04:34 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

Ben Stokes gets his first job of the day done, and opts to have a bat first.

He looks relieved, and says it was an obvious choice, suggesting the pitch is very flat.

A reminder that we weren't entirely sure what was going to happen until the early (er) hours of this morning because of the virus going round the England camp.

But thankfully, they are able to field an XI - you can read the latest from Stephan Shemilt out in Pakistan here.
