Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique to Sky Sports: "It has been a good day for Pakistan as we have played well. Yes we lost some wickets but we are good position.

"We have seen on the first two days that the wicket is good to bat on but on the third day it is now spinning. So it should be a good contest on the fourth and fifth days.

On his opening stand with Imam Ul-Haq: "Firstly, congratulations to England they played wonderfully. It was a special total. We kept in mind that we had to play well as the openers set the tone. We had a nice partnership and it gave the side confidence.

"We have a positive approach. There is no talk of going for the draw. England will play attacking and give us a good total. So we will fight it out."

  3. 'We aren't interested in drawing'published at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2022

England's Joe Root speaking to Sky Sports: "A brilliant day. That last session, all the work we put in came to fruition.

"It was attritional. We had to be creative throughout the day and we got our rewards at the end.

"If you feel like you have no chance then you make it extremely hard. But we stuck together, tried to make it fun and interesting and get them to think outside the box. As far as they are behind it still gives us a real opportunity to go and win this Test match.

"You know with our team and the way we play our cricket that we will be making sure we give ourselves a chance of winning the game. We aren't interested in drawing, we want to give us the best chance of winning and if Pakistan are good enough to beat us then so be it.

"We have three big wickets to take in the morning, then we will try and crash some around and get up to a reasonable total.

"I'm sure there's lots of entertaining cricket to be played in the next couple of days."

Pakistan were 413-3 after tea but four wickets in the final session have given England a sniff.

First Ollie Robinson had Saud Shakeel caught behind Babar slashed Will Jacks to point, Mohammad Rizwan was caught at mid-wicket off James Anderson and Naseem Shah hit Jacks to deep mid-wicket.

Pakistan close on 499-7, still 158 runs behind with two days left.

England have been good all the way through the Test, better control with the ball, only a team with their positive and attacking strategy is likely to have a good chance of forcing a win on a pitch like this.

You always get a spring in your step when you get a wicket and on this pitch it counts double.

I would have preferred them to bowl quite orthodoxically to Babar and get him out that way.

    A word for Babar Azam.

His 136 from 168 balls was as classy a century as they come. It blunted England throughout the afternoon session.

A draw is still a firm favourite but we should build up to an interesting last day.

The lead is substantial. If they could polish off the first few wickets then they will have a long time bowling against Pakistan in the last innings.

Joe Root says England have had a "brilliant day".

"We're not really interested in drawing the game," he says.

It looked a little bleak around tea time but that last session has just swung the balance of the game. The bowlers have stuck at it really well. Babar was a class act and it was such a surprise when he got out.

But then again Jacks got a wicket with his first over back and it's not easy capturing a side out there.

It feels a very long time ago now but this day started with Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq progressing to their centuries.

That meant for the first time in a Test match all four openers scored centuries in the first innings.

It's about handling the pressure. It will be difficult but if England can get wickets before the lunch they will be happy.

Seven wickets in the day on that pitch has to be seen as a really good effort, doesn't it? Let's not forget Babar's brilliant 136 either.
