Tell me again why Jack Leach is rubbish?

These are a crucial few overs here. If England can nip one more over, they'll be feeling very good.

    Target 355

The end of a successful over for Jack Leach and England. Faheem Ashraf is in at number six, a promotion for him.

But how big was that wicket for England? Can they snare another one before stumps?

    Imam c Root b Leach 60 (Pak 191-4)

Got 'im! Very sharp catch from Joe Root at slip!

Imam-ul-Haq hangs his head but England are jubilant, the partnership is broken! It was full from Jack Leach, encouraging the drive, the batter obliged but the ball dipped on him and the edge was found.

It went very quickly to Root and he gobbled up the catch before flinging the ball into the Multan skies.

Shakeel gets to his fifty. It's his third in Test cricket.

    Pak 191-3

A third half-century in the series for Saud Shakeel. He gets there from 115 balls with a simple push to mid-on.

Plenty of work still to do for the left-hander but he's batted very nicely indeed. I can't remember him even giving a chance.

One thing that's clear now is that this wicket is probably better for batting now than at any other stage in this game.

Jack Leach is back, he's had a fruitless time today.

  9. Pak 190-3published at 60 overs

    Target 355

Just a single from Anderson's over and that is largely thanks to two excellent pieces of fielding.

Firstly from Zak Crawley, diving to his left to stop Imam's powerful cut shot, and then Ollie Robinson, swooping to pick the ball up cleanly at mid-wicket.

England's energy is still there. One last push before the close...?

I'll answer my own question: it's Jimmy Anderson. At least that is Stokes' choice. Another magic ball wouldn't go amiss...

  11. Postpublished at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2022

Ben Stokes? Jimmy Anderson? Who should England turn to for what is likely to be the last half hour (if we're lucky) of the day?

England desperately need to break this partnership.

Still nothing doing for England and this fourth-wicket partnership is now worth 106.

Time for drinks. Can England concoct a plan to bring the breakthrough?

If England somehow conspire to lose this match after the position they were in, it will cap off a truly miserable weekend for English sport.

The floodlights are on and the shadows are lengthening out in Multan. Ollie Robinson oversteps a couple of times but there are no runs off the bat in the over.

I can't help but wonder how much of a different feel there would be out in the middle now if England had reviewed that caught behind in Wood's last over - or if it had been given.

I must admit I thought it was pad in real time, the umpire and Pope thought the same. Wood and Joe Root thought otherwise and it turns out they were right!

Still, it wasn't reviewed so Pakistan remain only three down.

Oh my goodness, we're seeing the Ultra-Edge and there was something on it. Wood was right.

  19. Pak 183-3published at 57 overs

    Target 355

Oh no. There is a big England appeal for a catch behind down the leg side off Mark Wood. Ollie Pope who takes it doesn't appeal, though, and it's given not out.

After burning a review earlier, Stokes decides against sending it upstairs. Mistake. UltraEdge shows the slightest of murmurs as the ball passes the bat.

Big let off for Imam and a missed opportunity for England.
