Australia captain Pat Cummins has won the toss in Delhi. He has opted to bat first despite their troubles last week.

Back at the mount, Tom Blundell is a lucky man. He tries to hit Jack Leach onto the beach and almost offers a catch.

Ollie Robinson sprints back from mid-off but cannot get there in time as the ball swirls above him.

  2. NZ 149-5published at 49 overs

    Conway 75, Blundell 29

England have fielders in all sort of strange positions as Ben Stokes tries to bring about an error with these bouncers.

Devon Conway, who has played superbly today, hits one in the air. That will give Stokes some encouragement.

  3. NZ 146-5published at 48 overs

Lovely from right-hander Blundell, who rocks back to hit Jack Leach through the covers and to the boundary.

My request to hear your cricket-related dreams fell on deaf ears yesterday. I bet Blundell plays strokes like that in his head while he sleeps.

  4. NZ 142-5published at 47 overs

    Conway 73, Blundell 23

The floppy top of Ben Stokes' hair is looking particularly blonde in the afternoon sunshine. As almost seems a given now, he has come on to bowl bouncers.

Tom Blundell looks a little uncomfortable as he hops to play one near his shoulder. Short leg comes in as a result.

  5. NZ 138-5published at 46 overs

    Trail by 187

It is indeed going to be Ben Stokes to start this session with the ball for England.

Ben Stokes is jogging towards the middle and whirling his arm over.

It looks like he's going to have a first bowl of the day shortly.

Which current batter looks the best batting in a cap? Virat? Tom Blundell looks pretty fine in fairness.

Australia picked a spinner for his debut last week in the first Test against India and he took seven wickets.

It seems they're going to try and do it again with all reports from the Aussie press suggesting left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann is going to play in today's second Test.

The toss for that game is due shortly.

Ben Stokes is quite adamant that it doesn't mean too much to him to be captaining England in the country of his birth. He says it's more of a nice moment for his friends and family.

However, it still throws up some quirks. He would have crossed paths with Tom Blundell in junior cricket in Wellington, shortly before the Stokes family moved to England.

    Thanks Sam.

As you say, an even session but England remain in control.

A fairly even session but England still on top in the match.

To see how it develops in the middle session, it's over to Matthew Henry.

  12. 'New Zealand clawing their way back'published at 03:06 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

The scoring rate was still decent. It shows the wicket is still good and why England were so keen to bowl yesterday. They will still be pleased but New Zealand are clawing their way back into it.

Conway fought so hard last night and is now getting his rewards.

  13. NZ 138-5published at 46 overs

    Conway 72, Blundell 21

A single from the Leach over and that is tea on day two of this day-night Test.

England had the better of the first hour as they took two wickets but Devon Conway and Tom Blundell have since put on an unbroken 55 for the sixth wicket.

New Zealand still trail by 187 but while the sun is out, conditions look excellent for batting.

  14. NZ 137-5published at 45 overs

Root races through his over, as he so often does, it's a maiden and we will have time for another.

  15. NZ 137-5published at 44 overs

Top shot from Tom Blundell, driving the ball back past Leach, straight on mid-on for four.

Great timing and placement. Time for maybe two more overs before the interval.

  16. NZ 133-5published at 43 overs

    Conway 70, Blundell 16

Root is back after a change of ends but drags one short to Conway, who is able to cut it away behind square for four. Nicely played.

The left-hander adds two into the leg side and that brings up the fifty partnership for the sixth wicket.

  17. NZ 127-5published at 42 overs

    Trail by 198

So about something brewing in that Root v Conway battle... Jack Leach is back on to bowl.

He gets through a maiden to Blundell and we've got 10 minutes until the tea break.

  18. NZ 127-5published at 41 overs

    Trail by 198

The follow-on is officially avoided as Conway whips Robinson through the leg side. It takes a big dive from Anderson to pull it back and prevent the boundary.

Great effort to save a run from England's record wicket-taker.

  19. NZ 123-5published at 40 overs

    Trail by 202

It's turning into an interesting battle between Root and Conway now.

The former England skipper is not afraid to mix it up and that is making it tougher for the Black Caps opener to get after him in the way he seems to be keen to do.

Just a single from the over but it feels like something is brewing.
