    Broad lbw b Bracewell 14 (Eng 389-7)

    Plumb.

Well bowled by Michael Bracewell from round the wicket to the left-handed Stuart Broad. It straightened nicely and was going on to hit middle.

Ollie Robinson the new batter for England.

He has not... this looked pretty straight.

Stuart Broad attempts to sweep Michael Bracewell and is struck low on the pad. He reviews. Has he got some bat on this?

  4. Eng 389-6published at 79.0 overs

There's a tribute Twiiter account named after Stuart Broad's batting for a reason.

Neil Wagner bangs it in short and Broad swats at it like there's a fly bothering him and the ball ricochets off the top edge of his bat for four.

Not how, but how many, for the Nighthawk

If you are young player you want Joe Root's record, but he's shown with the likes of Harry Book that the game is evolving and challenging for you.

Peter Sketch: I wonder if there's ever been an England partnership of 300 in an innings when we've been all out for under 400? Just asking...

Arjun Singh: Wow. At least we collapse with 360 on the board these days. Foakes a bit unlucky though.

    Eng 381-6published at 78.0 overs

Joe Root skips a couple of paces down the pitch and wallops Michael Bracewell's first ball over the advertising hoardings and on to the grassy banks with a slog sweep. Meaty. He got hold of all of that.

Stuart Broad and Root happy to knock the rest of the over into the gaps

Two overs until the new ball.

Kieran: What's Stokes's average since becoming captain?

37.21 compared to 35.76 in the ranks...

Does it still count as the Nighthawk if it's night-time in the UK?

As expected the technology backs up the original call on field.

Stuart Broad the new batter by the way.

Neil Wagner strikes Joe Root, attempting a paddle over the slips, on the pad. New Zealand skipper Tim Southee reviews at the last second, but more in hope than expectation.

Deary me. A comedy of errors.

Ben Foakes has a pair of dazzling nice white spikes on. However, they don't give him the grip required when he lurches forward to play a defensive shot and he ends up face forward in the turf.

The England wicketkeeper is stumped, much to the delight of his counterpart Tom Blundell.

Think we're all in agreement on Ben Stokes' batting. Will be something to be addressed in Bazball Part Deux.

Theo: Stokes must be contracted to play every innings as a slogger… really needs to pick and chose his attack better. Such a waste of talent otherwise.

Sean Richard: I love this new approach from England, but for me Ben Stokes is SO much better than that. Too often he gets out to ugly shots. He is such a good player and can afford to wait for the bad balls.

There is still the nagging suspicion that Ben Stokes the captain isn't quite getting the best out of Ben Stokes the batter. As if captain Stokes needs to have a sit down with batter Stokes to talk about getting the right tempo.

    Stokes c sub (Kuggeleijn) b Wagner 27 (Eng 362-5)

Not one the England skipper will particularly want to watch again...

Having got away with a slash down the ground a little earlier he slices a delivery from Neil Wagner which got a little bigger on him to mid-off.

There was an impatience in that slog.

Seven overs until the new ball so Kane Williamson scratches that luxurious beard of his and tells Tim Southee to give Michael Bracewell a go.

Ben Stokes misses a reverse sweep to the spinner's second ball, but promptly executes the shot to dispatch the next delivery to the boundary.

Overall, I think Joe Root has gone back to a more traditional version of himself in this Test. He looks in control, he looks calm and saw off any tricky periods.

  20. Eng 355-4published at 73.0 overs

First bowling change of the day in Wellington as grizzled left-arm Neil Wagner comes into the attack. Ben Stokes and Joe Root happy enough to work him into the gaps to start with.
