I'll be honest, I couldn't quite see the logic of England declaring when they did. I'm now happy to accept that Ben Stokes knows more about Test captaincy than I do.

    Williamson c Foakes b Anderson 4 (NZ 7-2)

A little bit loose from Kane Williamson.

The previous ball the New Zealand batter is forced on to the back foot and is beaten outside the edge.

James Anderson offers him a smidgen more width on a similar length and Williamson takes the bait. Attempting to use the pace, perhaps, he edges into the gleeful gloves of Ben Foakes.

Matty Managh: Remember, during the lockdown Pakistan series in 2020 we were all worried that Jimmy wasn't going to get his 600th Test wicket after England shelled plenty of easy catches? I'm really not sure why there was so much fret, he had another three years in him!

I do remember that and I think I was more concerned the great man might spontaneously combust than anything else!

  5. NZ 7-1published at 3.4 overs

Kane Williamson guides Stuart Broad into the vacant third region, but a diving Harry Brook prevents the boundary.

Broad angles one into the left-handed Tom Latham then gets the ball to nip away from the Kiwi. Latham backs his judgment on where his off stump is to leave well.

  6. NZ 4-1published at 3 overs

Four slips and a gully to the erudite James Anderson as he masterfully presents the seam on a challenging length.

Kane Williamson is able to get himself off the mark with a prod into the turf. Tom Latham picks up a couple a few balls later with a nice dab.

Tom Latham happy to defend and leave Stuart Broad's opening over as the tall England seamer probes on tricky lengths.

England opening bowlers making this a very tough challenge for New Zealand's batters. As you would expect.

Theo: Think that’s what you a call a jaffer… cracker from Jimmy.

Kevin Ticehurst: What a review that is, get in there Jimmy!!!

Chris Mitchell: That’s an outstanding review. Well played Ben Foakes. Jimmy Anderson just getting better and better.

There is, you know! A feather of an edge from Devon Conway.

It's a beautiful delivery from James Anderson which forces Conway to defend and it just finds the outside edge of the bat.

Conway must be a good poker player, If he knew he hit it. He calmly marked his guard and carried on as as if nothing has happened. England's slip cordon were convinced he'd got bat on it, though.

James Anderson beats the edge of Devon Conway's bat. There's a half-hearted appeal. Was there an edge? Ben Foakes is not entirely convinced, but Zak Crawley and Ollie Poper are adamant.

    England review.

The cordon is stacked as England look to make inroads in this period before the interval.

Tom Latham off the mark with a nudge off James Anderson to mid-wicket.

Joe Root has got everything. He's done it time and time again for England. The extra shots he has added in the McCullum era are special. You can watch him bat all day and never got bored.

When he hits that rhythm of batting, there is not a better player in the world.

The bowlers, Stokes and McCullum would have been sat licking their lips at the zip and the carry that was there for the seamers with that second new ball - and that is tired seamers after a day in the field yesterday.

I think they've sensed that and always that half an hour period before an interval is very tricky for a batter to negotiate. England are almost giving themselves two bites at that new cherry.

New Zealand are in a bit of a quandary themselves because they'll want to show intent but if they go two down in this period, they give themselves a mountain to climb.

  18. Eng declare on 435-8published at 23:25 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

    The right time to declare?

Feels like England want a piece of these morning conditions with the ball nipping around a little in the hope to snaffle a couple of wickets.

I would have thought they would have carried on with Rooty going because they could have scored 30 or 40 more runs. But they've got the runs on the board, they've got another 10 wickets to play with in the second innings.

Today probably didn't go quite as well as they'd hoped but going back to yesterday, they lost the toss on a green seamer, were 21-3 and 24 hours later are declaring on 435.
