Lots of wicket guilt around today, isn't there?

I believe it was the 411 stand between Colin Cowdrey and Peter May against West Indies at Edbgaston in 1957, John.

Also the second highest ever after Don Bradman and Bill Ponsford put 451 versus England on at The Oval for Australia in 1934.

Meanwhile, at the Basin Reserve Ben Stokes adroitly opens the face and guides Matthew Henry through point for another four. A little more composure in that shot from the England skipper.

I have to take complete responsibility for that wicket, I'd just googled 'what's England's highest ever partnership?'

    You're forgiven, James.

A deftly controlled hook from Joe Root is the perfect tonic to a Tim Southee bouncer second ball to get off strike.

Next ball and Ben Stokes gets luck after skying one over mid-on. Sub fielder Scott Kuggeleijn dives at full length on the move but cannot quite hold on. Harsh to call that a rop, really. It's quarter chance.

James: Every time I have turned on the cricket today, England have lost a wicket. Started with Sophia Dunkley, then saw Alice Capsey, Amy Jones and Sophie Ecclestone depart. Tonight, first ball I see, Brook out. I can only apologise profusely to both teams.

More conventional from Joe Root this over as he neatly works one of his pads from Matthew Henry's second ball to rotate the strike.

Ben Stokes is "not going to die wondering" acknowleges David Gower after the England skipper skips down the pitch and slashes Henry for four. Next ball he fails to make contact with a ramp shot.

  7. Eng 336-4published at 69.0 overs

Joe Root dances down the pitch and front-foot pulls Tim Southee's second ball of his latest over. He's not quite middled it and New Zealand's fielders in the deep scurry round only to watch it thud into the turf.

I just hope Harry Brook continues this purple patch. It's lasted the best course of a year and hopefully we can eke out another six months or so. Especially with the Ashes on the horizon.

That bring England skipper Ben Stokes to the crease. He's off the mark with a neat flick of his hip which races away to the vacant fine leg region for four.

Next ball he advances down the track and drives through the covers for back-to-back boundaries.

Harry Brook wanted to overhaul his dad's best score of 210 (albeit in club cricket) but it won't be today.

Brook drives a full ball on the up back to Matthew Henry, who initially wears the catch on his shoulder but then gobbles it up at the second attempt.

That's the wicket the Kiwis wanted this morning.

An easy nudge off the pads to begin day two? Open the face down to third?

Not a bit of it. Joe Root turns and reverse ramps Tim Southee's fourth ball over the New Zealand cordon for six.

What was that talk about how he fits into the McCullum-Stokes revolution again?!

Harry Brook thrives on any width. The one risk with that is the New Zealand bowlers will look to bowl him through the gate with coming back into him. But at the moment there's no obvious weakness in his technique at the moment.

  13. Eng 317-3published at 66 overs

Harry Brook gets his first runs of the day with a slightly inside nervous edge through mid-wicket. Just two runs off a Matthew Henry tight-ish first over.

Tim Southee will bowl from the other end.

Harry Brook has taken guard. He's on strike. Matthew Henry has the ball in hand and is at the top of his mark.

"Play" say the umpires, almost in unison.

Cool and grey in Wellington, but importantly dry enough to start. There is rain forecast later in the day, but England will feel they have pushed on enough already to mitigate any lost time. If Brook and Root get in, hold on tight, and Ben Stokes is in next...

The players are just making their way out on to the field at the Basin Reserve. It looks damp. Here's the forecast - fingers crossed we see plenty of cricket and dodge the showers.

    Bit of news for you.

England all-rounder Will Jacks has left the touring party in New Zealand today and will fly to Bangladesh to meet up with the England white-ball squad ahead of their series starting next month.

Jos Buttler's side will play three one-day internationals, starting on 1 March, followed by three T20 internationals.

New Zealand's bowlers are going to have to come with the bit between their teeth after yesterday. The conditions this morning should suit them.

If England had won the toss and bowled there's now way they would only have two wickets. I think their bowlers would have been unplayable for the first couple of hours.

Because rain curtailed play early yesterday play is scheduled to start 30 minutes earlier at the Basin Reserve. There's a bit of moisture around which may well help the Kiwi attack.
