There were some questions about how Joe Root fits into this new-look England team. Today we saw him grow into his role.

Joe Root's talent means he can play the ball so late. He has great rhythm to his batting and actually hits the ball harder than you think!

Sam Sheard: RE Andrew at 0016. It’s Jimmy. Root is incredible but Jimmy has taken more wickets than any pace bowler in history and is still doing it at 40. He’s on another planet to every other English cricketer.

The clarity that Ben Stokes has, chopping and changing his bowlers, giving Ollie Robinson one over there and he beats the edge.
The clarity he had when he went for that review getting all the information from the people around the bat and making the concise decision.
It shows the headspace that he is in and everyone is just feeding off that confidence.
Once England got out there with the ball, it wasn't long before Jimmy Anderson was doing his thing.
He removed Devon Conway after an excellent review and then claimed the prized wicket of Kane Williamson.
The world's number one bowler is showing no signs of slowing down.

Root's overall Test average is back to 50. Great knock.

Back to matters in Wellington and despite losing five wickets, England enjoyed another excellent session.
Joe Root, having been a little out of touch in recent months, was back to his best and was unbeaten on 153 when Ben Stokes made the declaration.
A little more from England's semi-final defeat in the women's T20 World Cup.
While the men's Test side continue to thrive, it was a disappointing day for the women's team as England were knocked out of the T20 World Cup at the semi-final stage by South Africa.
The tournament hosts racked up 164-4 in Cape Town thanks to half-centuries from openers Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt.
England started well in the chase but a late clatter of wickets saw them come up short, losing by six runs.
South Africa progress to face Australia in the final.
I'm not judging Andrew, but the way you've worded that - 'picking between your favourite kids' - does make it sound like you have a third child that has already been disregarded...

Andrew Waterson: When they both retire who will be England’s GOAT - Anderson or Root? It’s like picking between your favourite kids but I’m going Anderson.

It's just continually good cricket, they made the right decisions with the reviews. Ben Stokes makes the right decision and they get the very important wicket of Devon Conway.
Jimmy Anderson was outstanding, attacking, making it tough for New Zealand, as we knew it would be.
Thanks, Tim.
Another excellent session for England. Ben Stokes had people scratching their heads a bit with the declaration but was - once again - proven right thanks to those two early wickets.
Joe Root and Jimmy Anderson, two England legends leading the way so far on day two.
I'm off for a quick midnight snack myself.
The knowledgeable Sam Drury is on hand to take you through the luncheon interval and into the afternoon session with his astute observations and wise cracks.
If you find your eyelids drooping as we head towards the early hours, fear not! You can keep up to date through the night with notifications on the BBC Sport app.
Turn them on and when you scrabble for your phone in the middle of the night you'll see the latest wicket to fall right on your lock screen.

New Zealand get through to tea and sandwiches without further loss.
James Anderson with the final over before lunch.
His third ball is slashed aggressively over the slips by Tom Latham to gasps from the England slip cordon.

Jimmy Anderson has just bowled to Will Young with a 5-4 off-side field. All of the five on the off side were in the slips.

Nothing says cricket like watching when it’s -25 outside and there’s a meter of snow on the ground…

A shuffle of his bowling pack before lunch from Ben Stokes as Ollie Robinson is brought into the attack. Will Young happy to leave, before he's beaten by a beauty from Robinson which climbs just over the shoulder of his bat.
