  2. NZ 253-4published at 99 overs

Daryl Mitchell not put of his attacking rhythm by Stuart Broad's introduction as he hacks the England pace bowler's second delivery through the covers for a couple.

New Zealand ticking along nicely at the moment.

Half the challenge of playing this England side playing Bazball is you can get dragged into something unfamiliar. We have seen now more what New Zealand are about.

Paul Dickson: Have to say the late great Martin Crowe - technically perfect, fantastic stroke player - check his 1994 tons in England on one leg - none better.

  5. NZ 250-4published at 98 overs

    Mitchell 24, Williamson 38

Daryl Mitchell with another delightful paddle sweep to Jack Leach to bring up the 250 for New Zealand. The Kiwis lead by 24 runs.

Ben Stokes turns to Stuart Broad in the hope he can deliver one of those streaks...

Favourite NZ cricketer: Sir Richard Hadlee. Does that make me old?

Doug, age 48, Haddington, East Lothian.

Greatest NZ cricketer. Sir Richard Hadlee. Class and skill personified.

    Murray

Fav Kiwi. Got to be Richard Hadlee. Pound for pound one of the best fast bowlers of all time.

    Peter Watson

  7. NZ 248-4published at 97.3 overs

A delicate sweep from Daryl Mitchell as he gets down on one knee to Jack Leach and flicks it round the corner. Stuart Broad again putting the graft in the field as he dives to stop a four.

Richard Hadlee has to be the answer. The man who carried New Zealand nearly single handed into competing with the best.

  9. NZ 244-4published at 97 overs

Daryl Mitchell is showing James Anderson all the respect of the class smart alec to a supply teacher.

A crunching biff to the boundary followed a couple of balls later by a high elblow chipped drive straight drive down the ground.

Ominous signs. He fancies a big one, here.

  13. NZ 236-4published at 34.3 overs

Jack Leach flights one up, then bowls two more a little flatter to Kane Williamson. The New Zealand batter is showing him the maker's name, thus far. He looks solid in defence.

The night after the 2015 World Cup final I was in a bar where the New Zealand team also happened to be. I told Daniel Vettori that I loved him and he was distinctly unimpressed. I had a strong affection for Chris Harris and was once lucky enough to play against him in a club game. Fairly certain he got me out.

  16. NZ 236-4published at 94.3 overs

    Lead by 10 runs

The crowd are serenely grazing on the grass banks at the Basin Reserve. A nice dab from Kane Williamson sees Ben Stokes dive to stop the ball then gingerly does a few stretches with a slight grimace. It's clearly nagging at him.

Next ball Daryl Mitchell picks up four with a pugnacious drive through the covers. Mitchell looks in good nick here.

My favourite Kiwi has to be Trent Boult. His bowling has always been phenomenal and when it came to batting, the flamingo block is one of the most innovative and funny I’ve ever seen in cricket.

Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell. Three men who will not give this away, so represent hard yakka for England. It almost feels like these two partnerships hold the key to the match. If they can get New Zealand a reasonable distance in front, Michael Bracewell and Tim Southee can put the hammer down.
