Dropped at point by, of all people, Danni Wyatt. It was a tough, tough chance. She had to go to her right but she got there with both hands will be very disappointed to hold onto that.

It was at a good catching height.

  3. dropped catch

    In the air.. but dropped!!

Gaby Lewis cuts the ball towards Danni Wyatt at point but despite getting both hands to the ball she spills the catch!

Lovely little shot, the ball was there to have a little push at. I don't think Lauren Bell will be too upset, it wasn't a bad ball but well put away by Gaby Lewis.

  5. Ire 5-0published at 0.2 overs

    Good start by Ireland.

Amy Hunter gets off the mark first ball with a push into the off-side, before Gaby Lewis opens the face and guides the ball down to deep third for four.

    Great shot.

Right, the anthems are done. Ireland openers Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis are out in the middle.

Lauren Bell will open the bowling for England.

And as the sun beams down on what looks another hot day in Paarl, we are ready to go...

It has been a very interesting morning here in South Africa.

We started the afternoon gathered around Alex Hartley's iPad watching the WPL auction in our local coffee shop, but now we've got to focus on the game - and it's a strange feeling, a World Cup fixture being the underwhelming cricket event of the day.

It's hard to gauge the England team's mood, of course they will say that they're thinking of nothing but the game ahead of them. But it's hard to imagine there are not distractions, given the highs of record-breaking amounts of money contrasted with the disappointment of going unsold that they'll have experienced this morning.

    Speaking of Sophie Ecclestone...

  11. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone earn six-figure dealspublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2023

You could forgive the England players for being a little distracted in the build-up to this game with the Women's Premier League auction which has been taking place throughout the morning.

Nat Sciver-Brunt has been signed by Mumbai Indians, who will be coached by former England captain Charlotte Edwards, for around £320,000

Sophie Ecclestone joins England head coach Jon Lewis at UP Warriorz for £180,000, while Gujarat Giants signed opener Sophia Dunkley.

India opener Smriti Mandhana joined Royal Challengers Bangalore for £340,000 in the biggest deal so far.

England captain Heather Knight: "Really pleased [with the first game]. We probably weren't quite 100% with the ball and in the field.

"But I've got full faith in our bowling attack with the way we've performed over the last 12 months and with the bat, it was just outstanding, real dominance and mentality to get the job done in a really positive and entertaining way.

"We could probably bowl a little bit tighter with the ball, we know that and our bowlers set really high standards for themselves. They know they weren't perfect the other day but I thought our spinners in the middle were brilliant."

  17. Postpublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2023

Ireland captain Laura Delany: "It looks like a really good wicket, we're itching to get out there. It's our first game and we can't wait to get out there with the bat.

"Our preparation has gone quite well, we had a couple of tough games but we've shown that if we stick to our processes then the outcome will take care of itself.

"Morale is definitely up, there is a really good buzz and energy around the group. We know today is going to be a big challenge so new wicket, new team, new opportunity."
