Thanks for your company on an absorbing final day of action in the second round of the County Championship.

Surrey sounded a warning shot to their Division One title rivals by making light work of Hampshire, thanks to a sublime unbeaten hundred from Ollie Pope.

Notts and Northants picked up their first wins with a lot more ease than Warwickshire, who left it dramatically late to see-off Kent, and Essex and Lancashire shared the spoils at Chelmsford.

In Division Two, Durham got their first win by defeating Worcestershire, while Leicestershire and Derbyshire played out a rain-hit draw. Gloucestershire against Yorkshire was a complete wash-out.

We'll be back from 10:45 BST on Thursday for an intriguing-looking third round of fixtures.

    See you then!

Sense prevails, and the players shake hands.

It was a game blighted by rain, one that was always destined to be a draw.

    Durham (425-9 dec & 254-4 dec) beat Worcs (366-5 dec & 192) by 121 runs

    Bowled 'im!

A quicker, flatter delivery from Matt Kuhnemann flattens Dillon Pennington's stumps, and sparks jubilant celebrations in the middle.

Five wickets for Kuhnemann, who has bowled beautifully.

    Durham v Worcs 190-9, target 314

Adam Finch and Dillon Pennington continue to resist Durham.

Matty Potts has returned to the attack, but the first two overs of his latest spell are seen off with minimal fuss.

    Six overs left at Chester-le-Street.

WARWICKSHIRE BEAT KENTpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

Warwickshire (453-4 dec) beat Kent (158 & 281 f/o) by an innings and 14 runs

Joey Evison nicks Hassan Ali behind and the Warwickshire players celebrate wildly.

Evison follows his duck yesterday with a monumental 99 but it's heartbreak for Kent who came so close to snatching a draw they could not claim to have deserved.

The scorecard says victory by an innings and 14 runs, but my word it was close in the end.

Warwickshire were denied victory in their opening game at Taunton by the weather, but despite losing more than four sessions of this match, they have their first win of the campaign.

    Evison c Burgess b Hassan Ali 99 (Warwickshire 453-4 dec v Kent 158 & 281)

It's all over. Joey Evison's brilliant innings ends with an edge to keeper Michael Burgess off Hassan Ali.

The celebrations are wild and presumably fuelled by immense relief in the dying light.

    Warwickshire v Kent 281-9, trailing by 14 following-on

Four leg byes from the first ball, a cover drive for four from the second by Michael Hogan.

The deficit is down to 14. The ball is retrieved by a frantic member of Warwickshire staff on the perimeter. They know they are up against the light.

Five slips in place to finish the over.

    McKerr c Rhodes b Hannon-Dalby 23 (Warwickshire v Kent 273-9, trailing by 22 following-on)

Conor McKerr goes and looks heartbroken! What a catch from Will Rhodes at fourth slip to dismiss him. His 102-ball vigil is at an end after adding 74 with Joey Evison.

Michael Hogan is the last man.

  14. Postpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Warwickshire v Kent 269-8, trailing by 26 following-on

The light is deemed good enough to continue.

Joey Evison is on 95 with Conor McKerr on 23.

A minimum of nine overs to come, two wickets required, the light is on the wane.

    Are you not entertained?

  15. ESSEX DRAW WITH LANCSpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Essex (219 & 128-4) draw with Lancs (207 & 351-7 dec)

    Handshakes.

Matt Critchley and Adam Rossington see it through to the close for Essex, who looked in a spot of bother earlier this afternoon.

Yesterday's rain denied Lancashire a prolonged run at bowling the hosts out, and they have now drawn both their games in the Championship this season.

  16. Postpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Durham v Worcs 182-9, target 314

Worcestershire's 10th wicket pair of Adam Finch and Dillon Pennington are keeping Durham at bay here.

They have batted for eight overs now - 11 more to go for an unlikely draw...

  17. Postpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Warwickshire v Kent 268-8, trailing by 27 following-on

Conor McKerr averages 11 with the bat in first-class cricket. He has 23 from 99 deliveries.

There are a minimum of 10 overs to come in theory, but those floodlights are doing plenty of heavy lifting in the Birmingham gloom, it has to be said.

HUGE lbw shout from Chris Rushworth against Conor McKerr... it might just have been a touch high.

Next ball is edged past gully for four by McKerr who now has 18 from 78 balls.

A minimum of 14 overs remain. The lights are on. How are your nerves Bears fans?

  20. Bonus point for Leicspublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Leics 451-9 dec v Derbys 162-3

Chris Wright has just bowled Wayne Madsen for 75 and that's a first bowling bonus point for Leicestershire.

Every point could prove crucial if they're going to have a successful season.
