    Surrey 50-0 v Hampshire, target 243

Fifty up for Surrey. Fifty overs left in the day. 193 runs needed. 10 wickets in hand.

Hampshire are doing a good job of restricting the scoring with some disciplined bowling to defined fields.

  2. Leicestershire declarepublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Leicestershire 451-9 dec v Derbyshire

Lewis Hill goes four, six and then four leg byes off Mark Watt take Leicestershire past 450 in the 109th over.

That's the maximum five batting bonus points and they declare.

    Hill finishes unbeaten on a career-best 162.

  3. Postpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Warwickshire v Kent 132-7, trailing by 163

Joey Evison and Ben Compton have added 33 runs in 10 overs.

It's the second longest partnership of the innings, behind Compton's 15 overs with Jordan Cox.

It feels like a building block, until you realise there are 52 overs remaining in the day.

Wow, that has rolled along the floor.

Nick Browne goes back to a ball just short of a length, but it shoots along and hits him shin high.

Not the sight Dan Lawrence wants to see walking out to bat...

    Lewis HillImage source, Rex Features

Leicestershire captain Lewis Hill has just gone to a maiden first-class 150 against Derbyshire. He's surpassed his previous best score of 145. The Foxes are 434-8 with three and a bit overs left to try and get to 450 and maximum batting bonus points.

Worcestershire have steadied things at Durham in their chase of 314. Jack Haynes and Azhar Ali's fifty stand has taken them to 54-2.

  6. Postpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Surrey 44-0 v Hampshire, target 243

Kyle Abbott bangs one in which spits up at Rory Burns and flies past the edge of his bat. He does the same with one which stays lower a couple of balls later too.

Burns cracks the final ball of the set away for two to avoid a third straight maiden over.

I'm not sure any batter on either side has looked entirely at ease in this match. Ben Brown, Ollie Pope and Nick Gubbins all got a sniff of three figures but not without plenty of scares along the way. The bowling on display has been simply too good.

    Overton c sub b Paterson 0 (Notts v Somerset 89-8, target 295)

    A wonderful catch!

Five hundred first-class scalps for Dane Paterson.

Craig Overton edges low to substitute fielder Calvin Harrison, who dives low to his left and clings on after a little juggle.

Overton hangs around, but is given out, and is told in no uncertain terms to get back to the pavilion by Ben Duckett.

Overton really isn't happy as he walks off, but the catch looks fine to me.

  8. Postpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Surrey 42-0 v Hampshire, target 243

Rory Burns produces an absolutely textbook cover drive to a slightly overpitched delivery from Mohammad Abbas and finds the fence. Fine margins at this level.

They need 201 more from 56 overs to win. You feel they have the quality to accelerate should they need to.

Kyle Abbott replaces Keith Barker in the attack. Barker has been one wicket away from 500 first-class scalps all week. His wait goes on.

    Rew c sub b Paterson 25 (Notts v Somerset 89-7, target 295)

    Start the car.

James Rew is squared up by a lovely Dane Paterson delivery, angled across the left-hander, and Rew can only edge to third slip.

Craig Overton arrives at the crease where Ben Duckett is keen to remind him just how many runs Somerset still need.

Brett Hutton gets one to jag back, and the umpire's finger shoots up - Lewis Gregory has to go.

  11. Postpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Essex 6-1 v Lancs, target 340

Nick Browne just gets a little inside edge onto his front pad off the last ball of James Anderson's over, and it's a good job for the Essex opener - that was honing in on the stumps.

Anderson now has 1-2 from his first five overs, with three maidens.

  12. 50 runs

for Ben Comptonpublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Warwickshire v Kent 110-7, trailing by 185

With carnage all around him, the Kent opener has stood firm.

He brings up a half-century from 128 balls with a lovely cover drive off Oliver Hannon-Dalby.

He has nine first-class fifties, but 11 centuries. How Kent hope he can hang around for another today.

Compton's dad Patrick, son of Denis, is one of those to applaud his milestone. He is on an extended break in the UK to watch his son in action. He'll be proud of his resilience so far today, I'm sure.

  13. Postpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Notts v Somerset 86-5, target 295

James Rew is shaping up nicely in an incredibly testing scenario for Somerset.

The 19-year-old keeper-batter is technically excellent, an aesthetically pleasing player, and he moves to 24 with a delightful punch down the ground for four.

    Billings b Hannon-Dalby 4 (Warwickshire v Kent 99-7, trailing by 196)

Sam Billings nicks Oliver Hannon-Dalby onto his own stumps and Kent are seven down.

Joey Evison joins Ben Compton in the middle.

Warwickshire need three wickets, the sun is threatening to peep through. The deficit is 196. I hope the bus is fuelled up.

  15. Postpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 16 April 2023

    Surrey 26-0 v Hampshire, target 243

Mohammad Abbas doesn't often miss his line but he does this time and Dom Sibley gobbles up the chance with gusto, timing one beautifully off his pads and away through mid-wicket for four.

One to show the youngsters, that.

Both openers are into double figures and neither Keith Barker or Abbas seem to be getting much out of the pitch or the conditions at present.

    Cook lbw b Anderson 0 (Essex 5-1 v Lancs, target 340)

    Gone!

Just like in the first innings, James Anderson comes round the wicket and pins his old pal LBW.

That looked to keep a little bit low as it nipped back at Alastair Cook, and was clattering into the middle of middle.

    Surrey 20-0 v Hampshire, target 243

Keith Barker cuts a frustrated figure. Three runs come from leg byes from the penultimate ball of the over and then an edge flies through the third-slip space which was recently vacated and away for four streaky runs to Dom Sibley.

Surrey are tip-toeing their way closer to their target, but they have 10 wickets and plenty of firepower in hand, of course.

Worcestershire are in a spot of bother at Durham. Both openers are now gone after Paul Coughlin removed Ed Pollock straight after lunch.

The Pears are 8-2, with their target of 314 looking a long, long way off.

England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed has fallen for 33 with Leicestershire on 389-6 against Derbyshire. It's all about first-innings points in that rain-affected game.

    Cox c Hain b Woakes 29 (Warwickshire 453-4 dec v Kent 158 & 94-6)

Lovely back-foot punch through the covers by Jordan Cox for four is followed by a beautifully-timed flick off his pads for another through square leg.

But he's gone next ball, edging Chris Woakes to Sam Hain.

He took 12 off the over but it's his wicket that's most important. 201 in arrears still. Sam Billings marches in. Four wickets left.

    Kohler-Cadmore c Clarke b Paterson 6 (Notts v Somerset 58-5, target 295)

    Dane PatersonImage source, Rex Features

Another one bites the dust for Somerset.

It's a classic away swinger from Dane Paterson, who finds the outside edge of Tom Kohler-Cadmore's bat. Joe Clarke, deputising for the injured Tom Moores, takes a straightforward catch behind the stumps.
