Fighting back was the order of the day in Division One and Kent and Warwickshire did just that.

Wes Agar took four wickets as Kent restricted Middlesex to a first-innings lead of 43 before Zak Crawley suffered a first-baller at the hands of seamer Tim Murtagh.

Surrey were made to graft hard for their runs at Edgbaston and ended the day 61 ahead, with just two wickets remaining as Warwickshire ensured all results remain possible.

In Division Two, Durham enforced the follow-on against Derbyshire following Brydon Carse's maiden century and they will be hoping to wrap things up with a day to spare.

We'll be back tomorrow for full coverage of the five games. See you then.

  3. Stumps at Lord'spublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Middlesex 229 v Kent 186 & 40-2

Given how the innings started, this has been a very gutsy effort from Jack Leaning (19) and that man again, ice-veined Ben Compton (15), to negotiate the 17 overs to the close.

The light has sent them off with four overs remaining in the day. Kent have hauled themselves back to a deficit of only three and also hauled the game somewhat into the balance, which seemed unlikely when Tim Murtagh was wreaking havoc at 18:00.

Ben Compton posted 52 this morning but it was Ryan Higgins (71) who bludgeoned a fourth half-century in as many matches to give his side a 43 run lead. Luke Hollman (31) was the only other man past 30.

Fascinating stuff in store on Saturday, you'd imagine.

  4. Stumps at Grace Roadpublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 v Glamorgan 164-5

A good day of cricket, one on which Leicestershire look to have taken control.

Rehan Ahmed (90) and Peter Handscomb (95) put on 177 for the sixth wicket to guide their side to four batting points before Timm van der Gugten finished with a sixfer. How Glamorgan could do with something similar involving Sam Northeast, who is unbeaten on 16 overnight.

The visitors looked to be comfortable after fifties from Eddie Byrom and Marnus Labuschagne guided them to 123-1 in reply but a flurry of wickets in the evening session has left them five down and mindful they are still 93 shy of avoiding the follow-on.

  5. wicket

WICKET Lawes c Burgess b OHD 1published at 19:00 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Warwicks 150 v Surrey 211-8

Two wickets in successive overs at the end of the day will make Warwickshire feel a whole lot better after adding only seven to their overnight 143-8 following a delayed start.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby finds just enough movement to have Tom Lawes caught behind and that is stumps.

Jamie Smith remains on 57 not out, a fine innings in the face of some disciplined and determined bowling by the home side.

Surrey lead by 61, but it is very much all still to play for at Edgbaston.

  6. wicket

    WICKET - Clark c Yates b Barnard 12published at 18:52 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Warwicks 150 v Surrey 210-7

Big wicket for Warwickshire just before the close as Jordan Clark edges and Rob Yates picks up a very good low catch at first slip.

Tom Lawes is the new batter, with Jamie Smith 57 not out at the opposite end.

  7. Postpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 v Glamorgan 156-5

After another Rehan Ahmed over, Sam Northeast fends off the hat-trick ball from Tom Scriven. It wasn't as threatening as the last two, perhaps that long wait to think about it didn't help him.

Scriven has 3-14 and is causing lots of trouble in this session.

  8. wicket

WICKET AND CLOSE AT BRISTOLpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

Glos v Sussex 302-4 (Coles st Bracey b Zafar Gohar 74)

James Coles, 19-years-old, had taken the attack to the second new ball and raced to a career-best score.

But three balls from the end of the day he's shuffled down to just try and block Zafar Gohar.

He's beaten by one that skids through and James Bracey completes a simply stumping.

A real bonus for Gloucestershire because it's been Sussex's day.

At 158-3, they had work to do but what a partnership Cheteshwar Pujara and Coles put together.

Pujara, agonisingly, will sleep on 99!

  9. Postpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Warwicks 150 v Surrey 205-6

Ed Barnard tries out Jordan Clark with a short ball. The Surrey player is equal to the task and helps it on its way for four runs. Three overs to come. Rob Yates will bowl the next.

  10. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Glos v Sussex 298-3

Last over of the day at Nevil Road and Cheteshwar Pujara is on 99 but not on strike...

  11. wicket

    WICKET - Root b Scriven 0published at 18:46 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 v Glamorgan 155-5

Tom Scriven is on a hat-trick... what is going on this evening!? He'll have to wait for his next over to complete it, however.

Scriven's swing has turned Billy Root inside out and this fuller length delivery beats the bat and clatters the timbers.

Nightwatchman Timm van der Gugten comes in.

  12. Close of play at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Durham 452-9d v Derbys 165 & 92-5

No more play possible in the north east and Durham will come back tomorrow to finish things off.

    Another rip roaring day.

In the morning, Brydon Carse took his overnight 77 to a maiden first-class century.

He walked off unbeaten on 108 as Durham claimed maximum batting points and declared just before lunch.

They then created absolute havoc with the ball.

Derbyshire were 8-4 and 97-9 before Luis Reece's 56 not out got them to 165.

They then lost two wickets in the first two overs of the follow-on and there has simply been no resistance.

Derbyshire staring down the barrel of a huge innings defeat, still 195 behind.

  13. wicket

    That'll make them feel better.

A sublime delivery from Tom Scriven swings awy from Kiran Carlson's bat and he edges behind to Peter Handscomb.

Billy Root is the new man in.

  14. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 v Glamorgan 155-3

oof. Sol Budinger has dropped Sam Northeast on 9.

An ugly mistimed swat from Northeast off Rehan Ahmed goes straight to midwicket but Budinger coughs it up. He wants the ground to swallow him up.

To add insult to injury Northeast cuts the next ball to the rope to move into double-figues for the first time this season. Incredible.

Northeast was dropped on 97 here last summer... he added another 313 after that. A fact that might not be lost on Budinger, looking at his face.

  15. 50 runs

for Jamie Smithpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Warwicks 150 v Surrey 192-6

Jamie Smith runs a ball from Chris Rushworth down to third man for four and brings up a 95-ball fifty. In the context of the match, it is a hugely important innings for his side.

The champions lead by 42 with six overs to go.

  16. Bad light at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Durham 452-9d v Derbys 165 & 92-5

The light may save Derbyshire the ignominy of a two-day defeat.

Still 11 overs, plus a possible eight extras, scheduled today.

  17. 50 runs

for James Colespublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Glos v Sussex 276-3

A third fifty for 19-year-old James Coles in this is his ninth game.

    85 balls, six fours.

    Well played young man.

  18. wicket

WICKET Guest lbw b Raine 35published at 18:30 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Durham 452-9d v Derbys 165 & 91-5 f/o

A partnership lasting eight overs is perhaps a success for Derbyshire today.

They lose another as Ben Raine strikes second over back into the attack

He wobbles one into Brooke Guest who's struck on the knee roll.

But he's way outside the line!

Even before the replay there's doubt and the freeze frame has contact a good stump and a half outside off.

That's a poor decision but Derbyshire haven't deserved much luck with their batting today.

  19. Postpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Warwicks 150 v Surrey 181-6

One over from Rob Yates is all and Chris Rushworth is back for Warwickshire. Good start, just a single from it.

Jamie Smith is 42 not out, Jordan Clark has three and there are eight more overs to bowl this evening.

  20. Postpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Leicestershire 407 v Glamorgan 141-3

You've not missed much at Leicester in the last 45 minutes. Sam Northeast (7) and Kiran Carlson (5) have been going along at just over a run an over at Grace Road.

I think that's what you call digging in.
