So the rain must have relented and the forecast is dry for the rest of the day.

Ethan Bamber picked up the key wickets of Daniel Bell-Drummond, Jordan Cox and Joey Evison on day one.

Kent return to the middle at Lord's this morning facing an uphill battle, and that's nothing to do with the Lord's slope.

It looked a good toss to win for Middlesex and, in the 47 overs possible on the opening day, the hosts made the most of some favourable bowling conditions with particularly stellar turns from Ethan Bamber (3-26 from 11) and wily Tim Murtagh, who disposed of Zak Crawley early on.

Kent resume on 113-6 with Ben Compton unbeaten on 38 and Grant Stewart on 16, six of which came from one perfectly respectable ball into the seats off Bamber.

There are a full 104 overs on today's slate, no rain forecast but plenty of cloud cover and it's pretty warm already.

Kent coach Matt Walker says a score north of 200 would keep them in the contest, but as so often, the opening hour looks crucial.

  4. Delayed start at Edgbastonpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Warwicks 143-8 v Surrey

Surrey must be eager to get out there to try and polish off the Warwickshire tail, but they are going to have to wait for a bit.

There will an inspection at 11:15. Dan Mousley is 55 not out for Warwickshire and the venerable Chris Rushworth is on two.

  5. rain stops play

Raining at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Durham 410-8 v Derbys

It was a superb day's cricket in the north-east yesterday.

Runs rattled along at over four-an-over and there were two punchy partnerships that swung the day to the home side after Derbyshire had made inroads either side of lunch.

Sadly, the entertainment will have to wait because light rain is falling on the Riverside.

Warwickshire skipper Will Rhodes praised the confident batting of Dan Mousley after the 21-year-old's unbeaten 55 save them from total collapse on the opening day against Surrey.

"They were the toughest conditions we have played in so far this season, against a very good attack, relentless, as all four of them kept coming. That's credit to them and it's why they are champions," said Rhodes.

"Dan's innings had a bit of everything. In his first 50 balls he rode the storm with Hainy [Sam Hain] a little bit and then he expressed himself after lunch. He played really well with a great tempo.

"He is a big confidence player and has got a lot of confidence from last year, and last week against Kent he really showed everyone what he can do at this level, so it's really great to see him kick on again."

  7. 11:00 inspection at Bristolpublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

    Glos v Sussex 47-1

Rain has just about followed Gloucestershire everywhere so far this season.

It tipped it down in Bristol pretty much all yesterday afternoon and into the evening.

So the umpires will check the outfield at 11:00 BST.

Only 16 overs were possible yesterday after Gloucestershire won the toss.

  8. Durham finding 'nice balance' - Robinsonpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

Durham wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson believes batting depth will stand them in good stead this season after making 114 against Derbyshire at the Riverside.

Robinson, who moved north from Kent over the winter following last season's spell on loan, hit two sixes and 16 fours in an exhilarating 107-ball knock.

"The belief in the group is that there will always be someone to step up and get us out of a problem, luckily it was my day," he said.

"We're in a really good position in the game. We can play the game on our terms. Scoring 400 on day one is a testament to our batting and our style is working for us. We're finding a nice balance between being fearless and reckless. Long may it continue."

  9. Van der Gugten focused on wicketspublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

Glamorgan seamer Timm van der Gugten said concentration is key for bowlers because of early season weather hold-ups after moving to the top of the Division Two wicket-taking list.

His 4-45 on the opening day at Grace Road took the Dutchman's tally to 13 so far this season.

"You get used to the weather in the UK at the minute, we've been off and on, you have to make sure you're concentrating while you're on there," he told BBC Wales Sport.

"I'm pretty happy with the way the ball's coming out. I've been lucky to get the rewards, we've all bowled well in patches as a group, but it's about trying to do it for a sustained period."

  10. Sussex hit by points deductionpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

Gloucs v Sussex 47-1 (at close on day one)

As if things weren't bad enough with just 16 overs of play possible on day one at Bristol, Sussex then heard they had been deducted four points for a slow over-rate in last week's draw with Yorkshire.

Head coach Paul Farbrace told BBC Radio Sussex: "We know the rules, we know we've got to work harder at it.

"We can't moan about the rules and regs, we're causing it ourselves. If you help the umpires get the game moving, they help you - but if you don't, you shoot yourself in the foot, and that's what we've done.

"It's a really poor error to give away four points because you can't be bothered to shift yourself round at the end of the over quick enough."

  11. Weather outlookpublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 28 April 2023

"Cloud/misty start to the day with some drizzle, staying fairly cloudy to the N and E, sunnier spells for NI, Wales and S Eng, some showers" is the BBC Weather summary on Twitter.

As Spain swelters in the grip of a Spring heat wave, it was another damp one for county cricket yesterday, apart from at the Riverside.

Despite that, decent progress was made in four or the five games in the latest round of County Championship action.

What does the weather hold for us today? We shall see, but from a text commentary point of view, to borrow a title from the late Kevin Ayers, whatevershebringswesing.

Welcome to our day two coverage. Play is scheduled to start at 11:00.
