    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 82-0

Rob Yates and Alex Davies are ready to continue the reply at the Ageas.

Kyle Abbott takes the opening over of the day... and sends in a very loose wide... can Hampshire get a vital breakthrough in the 45 minutes before lunch?

  2. Postpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 107-3

It's quite a combination - Steve Smith and Cheteshwar Pujara together at the crease.

Pujara clips Joe Leach away for four and is 23 not out and these two are steadying the ship after those two early Worcestershire successes.

  3. Postpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Yorkshire 75-5 v Glamorgan 245

Jonny Bairstow gets his first runs of the day, a well-timed stroke off the legs that finds the boundary.

Dawid Malan has also found the fence with a trademark cut through point.

  4. A 'satisfying' knock for Hameedpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Notts 156-7 v Lancashire 214

This innings already must be hugely satisfying for Haseeb Hameed, facing his old team for just the second time in first-class cricket, it's a display of real skill.

An innings of great judgement, watchful in defence, selective in attack and his customary walk to square leg between each deliveries.

Yes, he's had a touch of good fortune along the way, but much needed for batters on a pitch which is still offering plenty for the bowlers.

Steve Smith is truly off and running - and unmistakably so.

A glorious pull from outside off stump which went one bounce into the Ladies Pavilion, followed by an equally glorious leave, both performed with that same trademark windmill-like flourish.

Even the LBW appeal in between was eye-catching too.

He is every bit as unforgettable a shot maker as ever the likes of Gower, Richards (either of them), Graveney or Botham were in their time.

Intriguing scenes at Chelmsford before play this morning.

Can anyone identify the mystery man?

In the interests of decency, we have not shown the lower section of the photo. Suffice to say that the costume is figure hugging.

Hope no-one turns up in something similar at the Coronation tomorrow.

  9. wicket

WICKET - Keogh lbw b Gregory 19published at 11:58 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset v Northamptonshire 164-5

That is very out. A straight one from Lewis Gregory beats Rob Keogh all ends up and the finger is up instantaniously. A third wicket for Gregory.

A timely breakthrough for the hosts. Craig Overton does join the celebrations but not quite as gleefully as his teammates. Going to take a lot to cheer him up after the two drops off his bowling thus far.

  10. Bairstow batting as play begins at Headingleypublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Yorkshire 62-5 v Glamorgan 245

Yorkshire's England duo Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan are heading out to the middle at Headingley, where play on day two is about to start an hour later than scheduled.

They have work to do after Glamorgan took a flurry of wickets late on Thursday.

  11. rain stops play

Second hold-up at Chelmsfordpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Surrey 314 v Essex 44-0

The interruption at Chelmsford was brief and the players are back out in the middle.

Sam Cook resumes his over and Dom Sibley again edges past the slips for four.

He adds three and progresses to 23 not out, with Rory Burns on 17 - and then they are off again as the rain returns.

  12. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset v Northamptonshire 164-4

Cameron Bancroft is playing his last game of his stint with Somerset and he's just missed a sharp chance as James Sales edged Craig Overton to second slip.

He looks like he didn't read the pace off the bat as his hands got up above his left shoulder but can only deflect it on its way to the ropes.

As is compulsory after a drop, Sales despatches the next, identical delivery, through the covers for four.

Craig Overton's face is darker than the skies above the UK this morning.

  13. Postpublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 95-3

Josh Tongue drops short and Steve Smith pulls it away for four.

A loud lbw appeal follows as Smith shapes to play to leg - not out says the umpire.

  14. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Derbypublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Derbyshire 189-3 v Leicestershire 122

The lead is 63 as the heavens open at the County Ground. Players and supporters are running for cover. That came on very quickly indeed.

  15. Postpublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Notts 142-7 v Lancashire 214

James Anderson is on the money straight away and is very unlucky to still be without a first-innings wicket.

Haseeb Hameed inside-edges just past his leg stump and away to fine leg for four.

A funny moment at the other end as Tom Bailey's first ball to Olly Stone is a bouncer. Stone sent down a really hostile spell towards Lancashire's tail-enders yesterday, including Bailey.

They're all smiles, which is nice to see.

  16. Postpublished at 11:50 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 89-3

Josh Tongue relieves Ben Gibbon and Steve Smith eases him into the gap between mid-wicket and mid-on for his second boundary and moves into double figures.

  17. Postpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset v Northamptonshire 156-4

James Sales has not seen much of the strike but he finally gets the chance to face Lewis Gregory and as he prods at one outside off-stump the timbers fly...

What's this though, it's not a bail, it's the toe of Sales' bat, arching into the air. He scampers through for a single like a consumate professional while a fielder retrieves the debris and piles it behind the actual stumps. As you were...

  18. Mystery solved on helmet delaypublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcestershire 264 v Sussex 89-3

The confusion over Steve Smith's helmet appears to have been cleared up.

It seems that Smith's helmet was not fitted with a stem guard. And they are now compulsory in this country. But not down under.

He is now into double figures with a majestic clip though mid on for four.

  19. wicket

    WICKET - Hutton c Bell b Bailey 7published at 11:45 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Notts 138-7 v Lancashire 214

Tom Bailey gets his third wicket of the innings, a slightly shorter ball nipping away from Brett Hutton and taking the edge behind to the keeper.

Olly Stone is the next man in, and James Anderson is coming on to bowl.

  20. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Chelmsfordpublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 37-0

The skies look very threatening and the players scuttle off as big old drops of rain start to fall.

Surrey have made a solid start to their reply so this might suit Essex more than their visitors, if truth be told.
