Glamorgan’s Australian fast bowler Michael Neser turned in a devastating display of pace and swing for career-best figures of 7-32, including a hat-trick, as Jonny Bairstow was left stranded on 20 not out.

Bairstow had struck a couple of stylish boundaries in sunny conditions following the morning rain, before Neser began his work by trapping Dawid Malan leg-before for 25.

George Hill played no shot to a Neser inswinger which hit the top of off-stump, and Dom Bess unbelievably made the same mistake next ball.

Bairstow then needed treatment for a blow on the ankle when a stray throw caught him, but he saw Jordan Thompson edging behind to leave Yorkshire nine down.

Bairstow’s attempt to take the strike then back-fired as he went for an optimistic single and last man Ben Coad was run out by a direct hit from Kiran Carlson without facing.

England's Jack Leach strikes at Taunton as Tom Taylor obligingly hits the ball straight to mid-off where Craig Overton makes no mistake with the catch. Not the greatest of shots just a few minutes before lunch.

Debutant Jordan Buckingham comes out to join James Sales, who is 44 not out, and immediately picks up a single.

    Worcestershire 264, Sussex 158-5

    BBC Sport at New Road

A very entertaining morning of cricket - especially given the ominous weather forecast last night.

The local sages departed for the day predicting doom, gloom, rain and worse.

But we have had a full morning's session, four wickets, almost 100 runs, and a fine innings from Sussex skipper Cheteshwar Pujara, who is warming up nicely for the India Test star ahead of the World Test Championship final againsst Australia at The Oval on 7 June.

Pujara, on 40, is well on course for a repeat of the ton he got here in this sdame fixture last season.

Oh yes. All that and a bit of Steve Smith too!

  6. Postpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset v Northamptonshire 221-6

Lunch still 15 minutes away at Somerset. The shortened morning session has seen Northants add 84 runs so far for the loss of two wickets to just about edge it.

James Sales has breezed on to 42 while Tom Taylor has shown a couple of lovely touches in his 24 from 39 balls including two pulled fours in succession off Craig Overton's last over.

Andrew Salter survives the one over possible in Glamorgan's second innings before lunch and the visitors head into the break in a dominant position at Headingley, courtesy of Michael Neser's 7-32.

Those career-best figures included a hat-trick - Dawid Malan, George Hill and Dom Bess the batters dismissed by the Australia Test seamer.

Jonny Bairstow didn't get the batting practice he might have wanted or expected. He faced 34 balls for his 20 not out.

  9. Lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 80-1

    Paul Newton
    BBC Essex sport

Cricket between the showers at Chelmsford on the second morning.

Surrey resumed at 1-0 and Rory Burns and Dom Sibley negotiated the new ball with little difficulty, albeit Burns survived a very difficult chance to Dan Lawrence at third slip off Jamie Porter on 11.

He eventually succumbed to a good low catch at first slip by Alastair Cook off the deserving Sam Cook for 27.

Dom Sibley (39) and Ollie Pope (9) safely guided Surrey to lunch.

  10. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Notts 218-8 v Lancashire 214

Notts move into the lead just before the lunch break, courtesy of a lofted straight drive by Stuart Broad off George Balderson.

After losing a couple of early wickets, Haseeb Hameed and Olly Stone brought Notts back into it with an eighth-wicket stand of 50.

Hameed is 95 not out and five runs away from what would be a hard-fought century.

Has Dom Sibley been reading the Bazball handbook?

Simon Harmer sends one down outside off stump and he clobbers it over mid-wicket for the second six of his innings.

Expect the prolific Essex wicket-taker to come up with a wily response.

  12. Postpublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Notts 209-8 v Lancashire 214

Stuart Broad is doing Stuart Broad things, hitting a couple of boundaries as Notts move within five runs of Lancashire's 214.

Haseeb Hameed might prefer Broad to be a tad more circumspect for a little bit - he's into the 90s.

    Quote Message

I think we'll see some fireworks here from Broad. There's a wicket left, Luke Fletcher can always come and block it out to try to get Haseeb Hameed to his ton.

They've taken an early lunch at Derby, very sensibly, given the weather.

    Yorkshire 106 v Glamorgan 245

Jonny Bairstow attempts to take a quick single off the last ball of a Timm van der Gugten over to keep the strike, but Ben Coad is run out by a mile at the other end.

Bairstow ends 20 not out and Glamorgan's lead is 139, thanks to Michael Neser's hat-trick and career-best 7-32.

A wonderful morning for the visitors.

Rain stops play at Southamptonpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 95-3

Why can't we have nice things?

It's one minute later than they came off yesterday but the drizzle in the air has turned into rain and the players troop off. Warwickshire might not mind, this time. They are 17-3 in the 35-ish minute mini-session.

As yesterday, I'm sure that wlll be lunch taken.

  17. wicket

    WICKET - Coles c Roderick b Gibbon 14published at 12:47 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 147-5

With all the hoo-ha surrounding Steve Smith, it should not be overlooked that Worcestershire are working their way through this Sussex batting line-up.

There's another one gone as James Coles tries to flick Ben Gibbon toward mid-wicket and keeper Gareth Roderick collects the catch via the inside edge.

Oli Carter is immediately under way with a single and the visitors need him to provide some support for Cheteshwar Pujara, who is 35 not out.

  18. Surrey lose first wicketpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 62-1

Surrey have lost their first wicket with Rory Burns caught at first slip by Alastair Cook off namesake Sam Cook for 27.

Simon Harmer is now into the attack and Dom Sibley has just slogged him over the leg-side for six - a very unSibley like shot.

  19. wicket

WICKET - Rhodes lbw Abbott - 7published at 12:47 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 95-3

Well, this is quite the start from the hosts... Kyle Abbott pins Will Rhodes and that's two in six balls for no runs scored.

There are still nearly 15 minutes until lunch. Hampshire's attack won't want to come off.

Oh, and that below-par 229 is looking a lot healthier too.

  20. wicket

    WICKET - Thompson c Cooke b Neser 5published at 12:46 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Yorkshire 102-9 v Glamorgan 245

Michael Neser has career-best figures and he's terrorising the Yorkshire batters this morning.

Jordan Thompson is scalp number seven of the innings, caught behind, and Glamorgan are set for a huge first-innings lead.

Jonny Bairstow is 16 not out but running out of partners. In comes number 11 Ben Coad.
