Liam Dawson is armed with a convoy of close fielders for the final over of the day for Hampshire, but no joy.

Kent have negotiated 26 overs in the final session unscathed but they still face an uphill task to save the game.

Ben Compton (30) and Zak Crawley (35) reached stumps on 66-0, not without the odd alarm.

The hosts still need another 213 runs just to make Hampshire bat a second time, but I don't think they'll be in a hurry to get to that point.

Yet, the pitch is low and slow and it could take a big effort to prise out 10 wickets on Sunday.

An intriguing final day in prospect.

Yorkshire were hoping to win the game in these eight extra overs.

But it's Durham who have benefitted to get right back in the game.

Yorkshire will hope a good night's kip will help them find the two remaining wickets tomorrow.

A superb game this.

Probably just about honours even on day three.

But if Gloucestershire can get a decent lead on the final day there might be some pressure on Derbyshire in their second innings.

The visitors trail by 56 at stumps.

Middlesex have got to the close in steady shape.

Max Holden will sleep 42 not out with John Simpson on 10.

Earlier, Jamie Smith made 97 for Surrey, Sean Abbott 48 and then 32 from Dan Worrall at number 11 pushed the first-innings lead out to 171.

Which means Middlesex will still have to bat for a very long time on day four to save the game.

He's got himself to 23 not out and if the tail can stick around with him, Durham might be able to pull this out of the fire.

James Fuller looks the bowler most likely to make the breakthrough for Hampshire late on day three.

He beats Zak Crawley outside the off stump for a third, or perhaps fourth, time this innings.

Kent 95 & 51-0 v Hampshire 373

Zak Crawley and Ben Compton have quietly ticked along.

They scored a combined seven runs in the first innings, but have put on an unbroken 51-run opening partnership in 18 overs.

Crawley has 23 and Compton is four runs better off.

The Kent first knock lasted two balls shy of 38 overs.

They have another eight overs to get through today and reach base camp.

They've bowled the allocation at Chester-le-Street but the umpires are happy to allow extra-time to try and get a result tonight.

Eight more overs for Yorkshire to find two more wickets.

Do Durham have a late rally in them? 55 more needed.

Leicestershire are all out for 270 in their first innings against Sussex with England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed unbeaten on 59. But that's a deficit of 160 so you'd expect Sussex to ask them to follow-on with time running out.

Gloucestershire are just about edging day three at Derbyshire. They're 192-5 in their first innings and trailing by 59. Ben Charlesworth has 57.

Durham were in a comfortable position at tea. At 109-2 they needed another 137 to win this one. But when Dom Bess left the field with a knee injury and Yorkshire were forced to change their bowling plans, Durham collapsed.

They have now lost 6-47 and we are not even sure if Brydon Carse will be able to bat. This is looking like Yorkshire's first win in 18 County Championship matches, unless Durham can pull it out of the fire.

The pitch has always had something in it for the bowlers and I have lost count of the number of players who have dragged the ball onto the stumps this week, on both teams.

The key for Hampshire gaining a win here is to get either Zak Crawley or Ben Compton reasonable early or ideally both.

Getting both out in the first innings in the first 20 minutes of the game was a real bonus and exposed the rest of the Kent batting.

But will it really happen for a second time?

Compton averages over 50 in his career, and basically wears bowlers down.Crawley If he bats for any length of time will take the game away from you. Two contrasting opening batters, but both hold the key for either a Kent draw or a Hampshire win.
