Essex have tried to be positive this morning knowing that runs need to be scored while they have the opportunity on a difficult pitch.

The overnight batters hit five boundaries in the first half hour to put their side ahead, although they were guilty on one or two ugly looking strokes in their desire to progress quickly.

Both fell in consecutive overs as Warwickshire reasserted their dominance. Matt Critchley edged Hasan Ali to the remarkably dependable Rob Yates at slip and Michael Pepper was perhaps a tad unfortunate to be adjudged lbw off Chris Rushworth.

Rushworth has just picked up his fourth wicket of the innings as Doug Bracewell edged him to slip.
