  1. ouch!

    Ire 132-6published at 41 overs

Curtis Campher plays a glorious pull shot for four, but Josh Tongue follows it with a shorter one that clatters into the batter's helmet.

They run three from it, which thankfully suggests Campher is fine, and the mandatory concussion check confirms it.

Promising signs from England's debutant, though. That was sharp.

England have been very good. It is a game of cricket they would expect to win and want to try and win it quickly. That is their modern way of playing,

Stuart Broad has shown that you can't be a one-trick pony in Test cricket. In his first spell, we bowled the wobble seam and got some seam movement. Then in his spell afternoon lunch we bowled in-swing, down the slope. It was great consistency in terms of his length, but that skill change, he was challenging the batters with different skills and that is what you need in Test cricket.

Matthew Potts is having one of those days where he's bowling so well but the blokes at the other end are taking all the glory.

He gets some really sharp movement to nip in and strike McBrine on the pad, but the umpire isn't interested - probably too high.

Meanwhile, there's already more than 2,000 thumbs down on Alastair Cook's lbw decision below.

Joe Root's drop is the one blemish in England's performance so far.

After the coolness of the morning, the sun is shining brightly in the afternoon. I'm in the Upper Compton Stand, where it's approaching gas mark one. Someone has just popped a champagne cork, which is standard behaviour in these parts.

  6. drinks break

    Ire 120-6published at 39 overs

I'm sure Sir Alastair will be keeping a close eye on the results of that one...

Time for a drink, after a successful first hour after lunch for England with the wickets of McCollum and Tucker.

In case you missed it, Jimmy Anderson got Sir Alastair Cook out twice in a County Championship match earlier in the season.

The lbw decisions were, well, let's just say debatable.

Cook has been waiting for the first Test of the summer so we could publish this picture in the live text (and who are we to say no to England's all-time leading Test run-scorer?).

Out or not? Hit the thumbs.

They are difficult those ones, you're almost just hoping to get it on the rebound.

Joe Root hasn't moved really, it's just him in the stomach. It flew at him.

  10. dropped catch

McBrine dropped on 7published at 38 overs

    Ire 118-6

    Oh, Joe Root!

McBrine drives firmly, gets a thick edge that flies to Joe Root at first slip but he can't get a hand to it, and the ball bounces from his stomach and out of reach.

That's the first mistake I can remember England making all day.

  11. Ire 114-6published at 37 overs

    Ooh, that's a beauty.

Some rare width from Stuart Broad is drilled beautifully to the boundary by Curtis Campher, who just stands and admires his work. Love that.

You can tell Jonny Bairstow hasn't played for the last nine months or so. He hasn't shut up today. It's like he's spent the recovery time thinking of things he can shout.

  14. Ire 109-6published at 36 overs

A couple of sneaky outside edges help new batter Andy McBrine get his innings going, as the stump mic picks up some questionable outbursts from Jonny Bairstow.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 35.1 overs

    Tucker lbw b Leach 18 (Ire 104-6)

Alastair Cook calls it correctly, as umpire's call works in England's favour and Lorcan Tucker has got to go.

He was playing some brave shots, had a few close calls and eventually it's one too many for the Irishman.

It is straight enough I think, but I just wonder about the bounce, but with umpire's call it may go in England's favour.

That was like a Steve Bucknor decision, it took him forever to raise his finger.

  19. Ireland reviewpublished at 35.1 overs

    It's all happening!

Lorcan Tucker sweeps, misses, is struck on the front pad and the umpire gives it after a lengthy thinking process.

Tucker reviews. He was quite far down the pitch, which may be the only thing that could possibly save him. It was straight.

It has been a great spell after lunch by Stuart Broad. He has asked a lot of different questions and had brilliant control.
