Billings went without scoring in the first innings, remember.

Zak Crawley at the other end on 31* with Kent still four behind.

Sean Abbott celebrates bowling nightwatchman Wes Agar on Friday evening.

Three wickets in 16 balls before stumps on Friday night dramatically changed the complexion of this game.

Kent hung in their against their illustrious hosts, reducing them to 211-7, only for Sean Abbott (78) and Gus Atkinson (55*) in particular to haul Surrey to a first innings lead of 84.

Abbott then claimed one of the late wickets as Kent remain four runs behind with six wickets remaining. He said: “It’s been a good contest - Kent have fought hard so far in the match.

"The three wickets at the end were great for us but Zak Crawley is still there and they have a couple of very good players to come, so there is still a lot of work for us to do - we need to keep the pressure on them and stay ahead in the game.”

Kent’s Arafat Bhuiyan, who took 4-65 on his first-class debut, said: “To get Ollie Pope as my first wicket was obviously very nice - you always have to believe you are good enough and that you are picked at this level for a reason.”

    Middlesex 175 & 81-1 v Somerset 404

No doubt who was the star of the show on day two at Lord's - Somerset's New Zealand bowler Matt Henry.

Coming in at number nine, he blasted a rapid 40 from 23 balls to help Somerset post a commanding 404 after being asked to bat first.

Then taking that confidence into his bowling, he ripped through the Middlesex top order with the new ball before coming back to finish off the tail in figures of 5-45.

He was wicketless in five overs as the home county followed on, but Somerset still lead by 148 runs as they resume this morning.

Bowling like that in Somerset colours reminds us of another famous Kiwi bowler down at Taunton - Andrew Caddick!

Saif Zaib top-scored with 29 in Northamptonshire's first innings total of 56

Northants head coach John Sadler has called for ‘fight, graft and resilience’ after another dismal day at the crease.

The visitors were skittled for 56 – the lowest ever total at the Ageas – on day two, having been dismissed for 63 and 72 in the past month.

Sadler admitted: “We are low on confidence. We have one batting point this year which is just not acceptable. It is time for them to stand up.

“I still trust what we are doing. We are hurting. We are taking responsibility. But (we have) professional cricketers and we can’t keep getting bowled out like we have done. We aren’t quite as good as what some of us thought we were.”

Sadler did point to the absence of skipper and vice-captain Luke Procter and Lewis McManus, strike bowler Ben Sanderson and former Test spinner Simon Kerrigan, adding: “When you are up against it and your backs are to the wall you want to call on that experience."

  9. Essex 'behind the game a bit' - McGrathpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Nottinghamshire 326-5 v Essex 298 (play resumes 11:00)

    Anthony McGrathImage source, Getty Images

Head coach Anthony McGrath admitted Essex "weren't at our best" on day two at Trent Bridge as three dropped catches helped Notts earn a first innings lead.

The home side will resume 28 ahead, with Matthew Montgomery 130 not out, and Essex need early wickets to get themselves back into the game.

"We bowled poorly in patches, we didn't bowl in partnerships and you have to give credit to Montgomery and the Notts batsmen, they made us pay," McGrath told BBC Essex.

"We talked at tea about maybe having them seven down. so five down, we're behind the game a little bit but there's still a hell of a lot of cricket left. Batting last on that wicket, hopefully it will be a tough challenge for them."

  10. Coles learns 'invaluable things' from Smithpublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Sussex 481 v Glamorgan 123 & 118-1 (play resumes 11:00)

Steve Smith and James ColesImage source, Rex Features

Sussex centurion James Coles said he had learnt "invaluable things" with Australia Test star Steve Smith as a team-mate for the past three weeks.

The pair shared a stand of 143 against Glamorgan - but it was 19-year-old Coles, and not Smith, who completed a century.

"Growing up I always wanted to do something like this [batting with Smith], so I was really grateful I got the opportunity to do so," he said.

"He says 'keep watching hard' a lot, every over, but he keeps it simple and he's a nice guy. He's been amazing around the group, giving us confidence."

  11. Weather outlookpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

We had a couple of rain interruptions yesterday at Worcester and Bristol, but fingers crossed, things are looking good for today.

"Strong sunshine for most, cool on some eastern coasts," is the BBC Weather summary. In other words, ideal weather for cricket.

  12. Foxes will be 'relentless', says Hillpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Worcs 83 & 26-2 v Leics 173 & 180 (play resumes at 11:00)

Who can predict what will happen on day three at New Road with any confidence? We're certainly not going to try.

Worcestershire need to score another 245 to win, and have eight wickets standing, with 32 having fallen over the first two days.

Leicestershire batter Lewis Hill, who made 49 from 121 balls in their second innings, expects the pitch to "break up a little bit more" and their bowling group to be "relentless".

He told BBC Radio Leicester: "It's a pitch where if you get a wicket, you can easily take three in three overs. If you put the ball in the right areas, things will happen."

  13. Bristol wicket helping spinners - Patelpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 20 May 2023

    Gloucs 255-9 v Durham 445 (play resumes at 11:00)

    Ajaz PatelImage source, Getty Images

Durham could face a dilemma over whether to enforce the follow-on against Gloucestershire after overseas signing Ajaz Patel took 5-93 on day two at Bristol.

The home side will start day three 190 behind, with their final pair together and Patel told BBC Newcastle it will be "a challenge to bat last on there".

He said: "The wicket is assisting spin bowling and it's my job just to put the ball in good areas for long period of time and ask questions.

"We're in a strong position but there's a lot of hard work still to be done. It's a surface where they can build a partnership and it can be difficult to get people out once they are well set."

Depending on where in the world you live and what you are interested in, 20 May is Clinical Trials Day, Pick Strawberries Day, Women In Aerospace Day, Cher's birthday, Flower Day and Eliza Doolittle Day and many more (there's a link between those last two if you know your GB Shaw).

It's also day three of the current round of County Championship matches and there will be a few batters facing trials of a sort at the seven grounds.

Wouldn't it be luvverly if, with a little bit of luck, the rain in Spain will stay there and we can enjoy an uninterrupted day's play.

    Welcome to our coverage.
