  4. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE DREW WITH ESSEXpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 21 May 2023
    Breaking

    Notts 442 & 96-4 v Essex 298 & 362-8 dec

The draw was probably the most likely result once Alastair Cook and Tom Westley had batted Essex into a strong lead, but at least both sides did their best to force a result.

Those two early wickets for Sam Cook put Essex in the driving seat and, once Simon Harmer had picked up two more, there was little Joe Clarke and Steven Mullaney could do other than bat it out against the spinners.

    Notts 97-4 - target 219

Close call for Steven Mullaney, who plays back to Simon Harmer and the ball skids through low but he's outside the line.

Mullaney steers a casual single to cover point, that's the only run of the over - and Essex skipper Tom Westley offers his hand to indicate that the draw has been agreed.

    Notts 96-4 - target 219

Steven Mullaney pads up to Matt Critchley and seven or eight pairs of Essex hands go up beseeching umpire Tom Lungley to raise his finger.

He remains unmoved and Mullaney denies the bowler a maiden, dabbing away a single to move into double figures and retain the strike.

Suddenly the run drought ends! Twelve of them in total, although it's past the point where Notts might think about a dash for the target.

Joe Clarke strikes Simon Harmer for two boundaries through the covers and advances to 42.

Notts have almost given up on trying to score runs now - it's all about weathering the storm with shadows lengthening and fielders crowding around the bat.

Yet another maiden, this one from Matt Critchley to Steven Mullaney.

Joe Clarke keeps edging forward to Simon Harmer, but he's still taking no chances and the onus is now very much on Essex to see whether they can find a way through.

Another maiden for Harmer. Nine overs left.

Matt Critchley is giving it plenty of air, trying to tempt the batters into a false shot, but they're playing it safety first.

Just a single apiece to Joe Clarke and Steven Mullaney and we have 10 overs left.

There's been some IPL action today and Chris Jordan's Mumbai Indians are into the play-off places.

Royal Challengers Bangalore made 197-5 in their 20 overs against Gujarat Titans - including another century by the amazing Virat Kohli. That match is continuing.

Those close-range fielders keep multiplying! Seven of them around the bat now and there's no doubt Essex are the side sensing they can force victory.

Nevertheless, Joe Clarke does well to take six from that Simon Harmer over. Still 11 to go.

    Notts 75-4 - target 219

It's an all spin attack now for Essex, with Matt Critchley replacing Doug Bracewell.

Critchley, who used to ply his trade just down the road at Derby, would presumably love to lead his current team to a win at Trent Bridge.

They need six more wickets and Critchley is finding turn and bounce as he starts off with five dot balls, but the sixth is cut for two by Steven Mullaney.

Watchful from Joe Clarke as he plays out a maiden from Simon Harmer and you wonder whether the thinking in the Notts camp is shifting from twist to stick.

Just 13 overs to go and they still need 146.

Steven Mullaney is up and running with a two into the covers off Doug Bracewell, who responds with a bouncer.

The Notts captain takes evasive action and there are only three runs from the over.
