Nice use of the feet by Dan Lawrence before driving Liam Patterson-White down the ground for four. A single follows to take the England batter to 37 not out. The lead is 149.

    Glamorgan 123 & 634-8 v Sussex 481

You'd think that Durham victory at Bristol might prompt more urgency in the Sussex and Glamorgan camps, if they want to keep pace with the division's front-runners.

Glamorgan lead by 276 now and there are 50 overs left in the day. Or are they too wary of giving Steve Smith any chance to remind us of his ability to dominate in a run chase?

Either that, or they're determined to break some records - this is already Glamorgan's sixth highest first-class total.

    Glamorgan 123 & 630-8 v Sussex 481

Having picked up a wicket with a bouncer, Ari Karvelas reckons it's worth trying another.

He's wrong. The Sussex seamer pitches the ball so short that it soars over Michael Neser and wicketkeeper Oli Carter and runs over the rope for six extras.

Those are runs Sussex can't really afford - even if they take these last two wickets quickly, they'd have to chase around five and a half per over.

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 280-3

Time for a breather for Stuart Broad.

Lyndon James is the Notts relief cloumn, but Dan Lawrence collects three runs through mid-on.

Time for spin. Here comes Liam Patterson-White.

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 275-3

That's a nice way for Dan Lawrence to finish the latest Stuart Broad over - he moves across his stumps before driving past mid-off for four.

The England batter is 27 not out and Rob Key, Brendon Mac and Ben S will be very pleased if he makes this start into a big one ahead of the Ireland Test.

Not the greatest delivery from Ari Karvelas, but Sussex won't care!

Timm van der Gugten aims a half-hearted hook at the seamer's short ball and makes some kind of connection, with wicketkeeper Ali Carter taking the catch safely.

James Harris is the new man at the crease, with Glamorgan now 265 ahead.

    Glamorgan 123 & 620-7 v Sussex 481

It's been a vital knock for Glamorgan as Michael Neser brings up his third half-century in four games, driving Ari Karvelas to the fence.

Neser gets there from 94 balls and his side are now 262 in front.

Stuart Broad overpitches and that's a pleasant cover drive which brings Matt Critchley four runs. He moves into double figures and Dan Lawrence has 20 at the other end.

Essex scored just 59 runs during the morning for the loss of Alastair Cook and Tom Westley.

There's no sign in these early overs post-lunch of a change of approach.

Three runs from the latest Dane Paterson over. The lead is 118.

Will this be the last we see of Australia's Steve Smith in a Sussex sweater - or will there be another chance for him to put the pads on at Hove later this afternoon?

Fynn Hudson-Prentice is handed the first full over of the new ball as Sussex resume their quest for wickets after lunch.

He's got two slips, plus a silly mid-off, but Michael Neser doesn't appear to be sensing pressure as he steers a single through gully to move on to 40 not out. Timm van der Gugten picks up one as well and he has 14.

A small statistical footnote to Durham's 125-run win over Gloucestershire - when Matthew Potts bowled Zaman Akhter, that was his 150th wicket in first-class cricket.

As things stand at the moment, Durham are 39 points clear of Worcestershire at the top of Division Two.

That will change later on, though, as Sussex are certain to climb above the Pears, even if they contrive to lose to Glamorgan - and should that happen, the Welsh county would too.

Skipper James Vince feels third place in Division One is a fair reflection of Hampshire’s performances so far this season after they crushed struggling Northamptonshire at the Ageas Bowl yesterday.

Their victory, by an innings and 135 runs, was their first in three games and lifted them level on points with second-placed Warwickshire, 25 behind defending champions Surrey.

Vince said: “We are probably where we deserve to be. There have been a couple of defeats when we haven’t been at our best against good opposition but, when we get it right, we dominate teams.

“There is still a little bit of ground to be made up on Surrey, but there is plenty of cricket to be played.”

Glamorgan are inching their way to safety at Hove, and in so doing have made their highest-ever score in a second innings

At lunch, this is also the eighth highest total that Glamorgan have ever recorded

Skipper Kiran Carlson for a career best 192 and Chris Cooke for 45 were the wickets to fall, but Michael Neser and Timm Van der Gugten have mixed solid defence with the occasional attacking shot to carry the visitors to a lunchtime lead of 245.

Cheteshwar Pujara hasn’t taken the field, but no reason has been given by Sussex for his absence
