  1. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 21 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 258-3

A couple of singles end the morning session at Trent Bridge, with Essex 114 runs ahead.

Neither of their overnight batters made it to a century - Alastair Cook falling to Lyndon James for 99 and skipper Tom Westley caught behind off Stuart Broad for 95.

England's Dan Lawrence is 17 not out and there has been no sign of Essex looking to press on towards a possible declaration.

The onus is on Notts therefore to try and run through the rest of the order - a tough task with Brett Hutton off the field.

Bizarrely, Sussex's stand-in captain Tom Alsop left it until the second delivery of the final over before the interval before deciding to take the new ball... and Timm van der Gugten played out a maiden from James Coles.

A good morning session for Glamorgan, who have stretched their lead to 245 despite losing Kiran Carlson eight short of a maiden first-class double century.

Chris Cooke's was the other wicket to fall, for 45, but Michael Neser has looked good for his 39 not out and Sussex's bowling attack - shorn of Ollie Robinson - will need to knock over these last three as soon as they can in the afternoon.

    Gloucs 292 & 300 v Durham 445 & 272-4 dec

Ajeet Singh Dale mows Ajaz Patel to mid-wicket for four runs as Gloucestershire reach 300.

The next ball, though, is caught at cover by Bas de Leede as Patel takes 5-96 - giving him match figures of 10-209.

Opener Marcus Harris carried his bat for 132 not out - the first to do so for Gloucestershire since fellow Aussie Cameron Bancroft made an unbeaten 206 against Kent six years ago.

Harris batted for just over five hours, faced 195 balls and hit 15 fours.

    Gloucs 295-9 - target 426

Matthew Potts attempts a repeat of the previous delivery, but Ajeet Singh Dale is good enough to drive it through mid-on for four.

Gloucestershire need another 131 - but it would surely be a cricketing miracle if they won from here.

    Glamorgan 123 & 603-7 v Sussex 481

Steve Smith might have hoped to be batting at this stage... instead, just before lunch on day four, he's turning his arm over.

Curiously, Sussex have opted against taking the new ball as they strive to prise out these last three Glamorgan wickets and Timm van der Gugten gratefully pumps Smith's long hop back down the ground for four.

He's on 13, with Michael Neser 39 and Glamorgan have stretched their lead to 245.

    Gloucs 291-9 - target 426

    Durham are almost there.

Matthew Potts produces a full length, inswinging delivery and that's far too good for Zaman Akhter.

Off and middle are displaced and Gloucestershire are down to their final pair.

WICKET Shaw c Potts b Patel 44published at 12:56 British Summer Time 21 May 2023

    Gloucs 290-8 - target 426

And just like that, the partnership is over.

Superb ball from Ajaz Patel, which spits out of the footmarks outside Josh Shaw's leg stump and he edges to Matthew Potts at first slip.

Shaw can't believe it. He won't have received many balls as good as that one in his career.

He put on 88 with Marcus Harris, who has now been joined by debutant Zaman Akhter.

    Gloucs 287-7 - target 426

Marcus Harris flicks Bas de Leede through square leg for four runs.

If the Gloucestershire tail can stay with him, the Australian opener is certainly capable of carrying them to this target.

He is 118 not out, Josh Shaw has a career-best 43 in his first Championship appearance of the season and the home side need another 139 for what would be a remarkable victory.

  9. wicket

WICKET Westley c Clarke b Broad 95published at 12:47 British Summer Time 21 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 252-2

To answer our own question - no, Tom Westley will not succeed where Sir Alastair Cook fell short.

Both overnight Essex batters falls in the 90s as Stuart Broad squares up Westley, who edges through to keeper Joe Clarke.

Matt Critchley is greeted with a ball which rears up unexpectedly at him and he does well to keep it out.

    Glamorgan 123 & 588-7 v Sussex 481

There's a new ball available in two overs' time, which is probably why Sussex are operating with an all-spin attack of Jack Carson and James Coles.

Glamorgan have advanced to 588-7 - which is now their eighth highest first-class total ever. Still some way to reach the 795-5 they posted at Leicester only last year, however!

They lead Sussex by 230 now.

  11. 250 runs

up for Essexpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 21 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 251-2

Notts are a bowler light at the moment with Brett Hutton not on the field. Tom Westley square cuts Dane Paterson for four and the Essex total passes 250. They lead by 107.

  12. Postpublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 21 May 2023

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 244-2

    Classy.

Dane Paterson overpitches and Dan Lawrence drives it back to the on-side of the stumps for four runs.

Worth the price of admission, that one.

  13. Postpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 21 May 2023

    Glamorgan 123 & 581-7 v Sussex 481

According to BBC Wales' Nick Webb, this total is now "Glamorgan's best second innings ever" - overtaking their 577-4 against Gloucestershire back in 1939.

Despite that accolade, you feel the visitors still need a few more on this already colossal total if they're to share the points with Sussex - the lead stands at 223 and we still have a possible 69 overs to go.

Michael Neser has opened up after a slow start, he's now on 30 not out with Timm van der Gugten yet to score.

  14. 6 runs

Scott Borthwick in the attack now for Durham. He drops short and Josh Shaw pulls mightily over mid-wicket for six.

Shaw is now 40 not out and just two runs short of equalling the best score of his first-class career.

    Notts 442 v Essex 298 & 238-2

Will Tom Westley succeed where Alastair Cook fell short and complete a century for Essex?

He flashes at one from Stuart Broad and adds four streaky runs down to third man to progress to 89 not out.

Essex are 94 ahead - but if they have any thoughts of a declaration and an attempt to win the game, they are going to have to get a move on.

Stuart Broad is certainly putting the effort in, but has yet to be rewarded for it. That's a maiden to Dan Lawrence, who is six not out.

    This is getting interesting!

Chris Cooke looked on course for a half-century but then he carelessly heaved a leg-side half-volley from Tom Haines straight into the hands of short midwicket.

Glamorgan lead by 215, with just three wickets left as Timm van der Gugten strides out to join Michael Neser.

  18. Partnerships are key, says Middlesex's Roland-Jonespublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 21 May 2023

Middlesex captain Toby Roland-Jones admits his side must find a way to build partnerships following yesterday's innings defeat by Somerset at Lord’s.

Somerset bowled their hosts out for 175 and 216 to claim their first win of the season – and Middlesex have only posted a total in excess of 250 once in six games.

“We’ve had good moments when guys have played well, but we’ve struggled to piece together a couple of partnerships to put pressure on the opposition,” said Roland-Jones.

“We’ve managed to lose wickets in clusters and it’s always harder to control the game if that’s commonplace. It’s through no lack of effort but we’ve got to come back and address that.”

Marcus Harris and Josh Shaw have posted a 50 partnership for Gloucestershire and are continuing to frustrate the Durham attack.

One bit of good news for the visitors is that they only have bowl another 13 overs before a new ball is due.

In case you've just joined us, Sir Alastair Cook was out for 99 in Essex's game against Nottinghamshire.

He still hasn't made a century at Trent Bridge but the locals gave a generous hand as he made his way back to the dressing room.

    Quite right too.
