That was some shot. The game is gone for Ireland pretty much but this is still a great opportunity for one of these lads to do something special and get on the honours' board.

  2. Ire 106-3published at 29.2 overs

    Shot!

Lorcan Tucker skips down the track and pummels a wide delivery from Stuart Broad through the covers for four.

  3. Ire 102-3published at 29 overs

Ooh, a couple of beauties from Matthew Potts that flash past the outside edge of Harry Tector's bat.

The second delivery in particular spat up off the surface.

    Some early encouragement for England.

Chris: Want an England win today, but would love to see Tector do well. Over the last 18 months he's been a class above, and will probably one day be too good for Ireland and wouldn't be surprised if he followed Morgan in playing for England.

Is that even possible now under the rules, Chris?

He's played all around it but I think it's just sliding down.

  6. Ire 101-3published at 28 overs

First celeb-appeal of the day from Stuart Broad as Lorcan Tucker steps across his stumps and is smacked on the pads.

Even for Broad it is not the most convincing of appeals though and Ben Stokes declines the review.

Sam: I still can’t comprehend how ridiculous 524-4 from 82.4 overs is. I can’t wait to see this new England in the Ashes.

England persisted with the short ball tactic for quite a while yesterday and we have seen that quite a lot from them.

Josh Tongue was given that role, which he probably isn't used to. It looks like the field today is set a little more orthodox.

  9. Ire 99-3published at 27 overs

A leg-bye gets Ireland off the mark for the day, before a stylish-looking clip off the pads from Lorcan Tucker brings a single.

The Test match went away from Ireland a long time ago. But this is still a great chance to enjoy some time out in the middle.

Stuart Broad, still searching for his first wicket of his innings, will open at the Nursery End.

Ireland batters Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker are out in the middle, they battled hard last night. At one stage it looked like we would have a two-day Test on our hands.

Three slips in place for Matthew Potts, who will open the bowling for England.

    Here we go...

Test matches like this do happen quite often. But should a result later this summer be by an innings or a thrashing of any kind, are the losers not worthy opposition? I’m sure if we thrash Australia in a Test, they won’t be seen as poor.

All of the focus now from Ireland will be on the white-ball game for the World Cup qualifiers.

I suppose it's a case of just muddling through in terms of red-ball cricket, whether the domestic competition will return in Ireland. But even then, it's about whether that would be a good enough standard.

  14. McCollum 'unlikely' to featurepublished at 10:53 British Summer Time 3 June 2023

Ireland opener James McCollum suffered a nasty-looking ankle injury last night and was forced to retire hurt on 12.

Cricket Ireland are still awaiting the results of a scan but he is unlikely to feature again in this match, effectively leaving Ireland 97-4.

"James underwent assessment and imaging last night at a nearby orthopaedic hospital. X-rays have revealed no fracture is present and we are awaiting on the reports from his MRI which is likely to show injury to his ligaments," read a Cricket Ireland statement.

"He is currently in an orthopaedic boot and crutches and it is unlikely that he will take any further part in the match."

Josh Tongue needs just two wickets to earn a place on the Lord's honours board on debut.

The Worcestershire bowler beings the day on 3-27 after removing PJ Moor, Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling last night.

  16. Racking up the runspublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 3 June 2023

We are almost becoming used to England scoring quickly, but even for their standards Friday was extraordinary.

Ollie Pope's 205 from 208 balls is the fastest Test double ever made in England, while Ben Duckett missed out on becoming only the fifth man to make 200 in fewer than 200 balls. Even Joe Root's 56 came at almost a run a ball,

England declared on 524-4, passing 500 inside 80 overs, the second-fastest in Test history behind their own stunning 506-4 on the first day of the first Test against Pakistan in December.

England feasted on runs in the Lord's sunshine on Friday, before some late Ireland wickets moved victory within sight.

How long will it take for them to finish the job?
