  1. Aus 338-6published at 99 overs

Pat Cummins comes in at eight - and Jimmy Anderson greets him with a bouncer!

The Australia captain would not have been expecting that.

Fuller next ball, zeroing in on the stumps but Cummins just gets his bat down to defend. Don't miss those, Pat!

James Anderson, after bowling a couple of looser balls, has got right on the money. It just skidded on a little bit, we've been speaking about the inconsistent bounce, how desperately did England need that wicket.

That's given them some energy and Carey is dismissed. They are on their feet all around the ground. Jimmy Anderson at the age of 40 has broken through today.

    Bowled 'im!

Back-to-back boundaries for Alex Carey but Jimmy Anderson hits back in the best way possible!

Carey prodded forward and the ball just skidded through, flicked the top of the pad and clatters into middle stump.

    England needed that!

Not the start England wanted this morning. Alex Carey dropped on 52 by Jonny Bairstow fourth ball of the day, off the bowling of Jimmy Anderson.

  7. Aus 330-5published at 98 overs

    Trail by 63

The ball does have to be changed. Will this one do the trick for England?

Not yet but the last ball of Moeen Ali's over turns very sharply away from Usman Khawaja. Far too much to ever threaten the edge.

That did just disturb the surface, Ben Stokes was running back trying to find it. It bounced on the concrete and the ball looks damaged.

Not a good few minutes for Moeen Ali with news of that ICC charge and now Usman Khawaja skips down and hits him back over his head for six!

  10. Moeen charged for breaching ICC code of conductpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 18 June 2023
    Breaking

    Matthew Henry
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

England bowler Moeen Ali has been fined for applying a spray to his bowling hand during the second day of the first Ashes Test on Saturday.

Players use drying sprays to help reduce sweat but are not allowed to do so without prior approval.

The 36-year-old has been deemed by the International Cricket Council to have displayed conduct that is "contrary to the spirit of the game".

He has been fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point.

It was decided the spray was not used to change the condition of the ball, which would have been a more serious offence.

  11. Aus 322-5published at 96 overs

More encouragement for Jimmy Anderson as he finds Alex Carey's outside edge.

However, the ball goes wide of gully and away for four.

Close, encouraging but ultimately frustrating for England.

Fair to say we're getting plenty of tweets about Ben Foakes after that latest drop. I am aware he may well have taken that catch...

If everyone agrees there's no way to shoehorn Foakes and Bairstow into the starting 11 and Bairstow has to play for his batting, is his keeping really that more solid than Ollie Pope's? Could be an idea going forward...

Any chance of "Jonny eyes" when he's keeping? Or just eyes in general?

That's spun sharply, the harder ball is making it spin. It's crucial England get the breakthrough in this first half an hour.

  15. Aus 318-5published at 96 overs

Big spin! Moeen Ali starts from the other end and rips one past Usman Khawaja's outside edge.

It beats the bat, goes between Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root and runs away for four byes. Good signs for the spinners but more runs for Australia.

If you want to focus on the positives for England, there was a bit of movement for Jimmy Anderson and the chance was created.

On the other hand, it is another chance gone begging. They are starting to stack up and could prove very costly.

That is a chance. It's a tough one, inside edge going down to Bairstow's right. There's a hint of movement into Carey off that ball, a massive drive. Jonny Bairstow went one handed, but it wasn't that far away from him.

You tend to see wicket keepers go one handed and I think he got wrong-footed. I don't think it was that hard a chance.

  18. dropped catch

Alex Carey dropped on 52published at 94.4 overs

    Aus 312-5

Oh no! Another catch goes down - and it's Jonny Bairstow again.

A booming drive from Alex Carey, Jimmy Anderson finds the inside edge and Jonny Bairstow gets a glove to it going to his right.

It's not a straightforward chance, it went quickly and low. Bairstow went one-handed but the ball bounced out. Not the start England wanted.

  19. Aus 312-5published at 94.1 overs

    Carey 52, Khawaja 127

Jimmy Anderson is around the wicket to start, bowling to Usman Khawaja.

A hint of movement into the left-hander and some extra bounce, too, but Khawaja is able to nudge it leg side for a single.

I like spin against the two left-handers with the slightly harder ball and I hope Jimmy Anderson can come in and bowl one of those spells. With two early wickets, this game could change.
