  3. How's stat?!published at 09:51 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

    • Usman Khawaja has the highest average as an opener in Test history (68.72, min. 20 innings as opener).
    • Khawaja scored 34% of his runs in the 'V' straight down the ground. His career average for runs in that area is just 14%.
    • England will need to bowl out Australia's tail today. In the 'Bazball' era, they have a collective bowling average of 14.17 against batters 8-11, the second best in the world in that time, behind India's 12.20.
    • Jimmy Anderson went wicketless in his first 15 overs. Only once in the last five years has he gone so long in the first innings of a Test in England without picking up a wicket.

  7. Broad offers no excuses for England errorspublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport chief cricket writer at Edgbaston

Stuart Broad said there was "no excuse" for his no-ball that bowled Usman Khawaja, one of four England errors on the second day of the first Ashes Test.

Khawaja was on 112 when Broad overstepped and will begin day three on 126 with Australia 311-5, 82 behind.

Jonny Bairstow also missed two chances behind the stumps and there was an edge past slip Joe Root late on Saturday.

"It's really frustrating," Broad told Test Match Special. "I got tight to the line and it was a close decision."

England collectively bowled 13 no-balls, their most in an innings since Ben Stokes took over as captain at the beginning of last summer. Broad was responsible for six of those, the most he has ever bowled in a Test innings.

  19. 'Khawaja’s innings was a triumph on a personal level'published at 08:55 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

Daniel Brettig of the Sydney Morning Herald described innings a "personal triumph" for Khawaja after previously struggling in England.

"Before Khawaja’s partnerships with Travis Head and Cameron Green, the Australians had rather made a hash of the morning, drawn into errors that spoke of the mental confusion England have caused among opponents over the past 12 months," he wrote.

"Khawaja’s innings was a triumph on a personal level, his first in England a decade after he first played a Test in the UK. It was also valuable for Australia in ways that transcended the scoreboard.

"Principally, Khawaja demonstrated that the touring batters need to stay the course in order to succeed. Unhurried in his tempo, masterful on the pull shot and safe against spin, Khawaja churned out a faithful facsimile of virtually all his runs over 18 months."

  20. 'Stokes may regret asking for flat pitches'published at 08:52 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

Robert Craddock in the Herald Sun believes Ben Stokes may regret asking for flat pitches this summer given his ageing bowling attack.

"When Ben Stokes ordered flat wickets for the Ashes he sentenced a 36-year-old Stuart Broad and a soon to be 41-year-old Jimmy Anderson to one of the greatest challenges of their careers," he wrote.

"In a five Test series spanning seven weeks – and with a relatively light recent ration of bowling – Broad and Anderson, along with the likes of Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood, may have to plough along on wickets as docile as a sleeping lamb.

"For all talk of Bazball’s batting blitz’s it just feels the bowling attack that can best hang on to the rhythms of this testing series will be raising the famous urn at The Oval.

"Stokes raised eyebrows and created a few chuckles when he asked his staff to give him eight fit fast bowlers before the start of the series.

"Now we are asking whether eight will be enough. Backs will stiffen and hearts will be broken if England continue producing these types of decks."
