  1. 'He controlled the innings’ tempo like a silky midfielder'published at 08:49 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

Writing in The Australian, Gideon Haigh said Australia owed Usman Khawaja "everything" after his fine unbeaten century on day two.

"With a touch here, a chip there, and orthodoxy everywhere, he controlled the innings’ tempo like a silky midfielder," he wrote.

"In defence he quickly drops a hand from the bat as though to cushion the blow. Even his cross-bat shots have a sense of violence contained. He moves so minimally pigeons could roost on him.

"The only departure from this doctrine of minimalism on Saturday was Khawaja’s celebration of his milestone, where he tossed his bat in the air, danced a little hornpipe of glee, and failed only to pull his jumper over his head …. then, a moment later, was leaning on his bat, serenity restored."

We woke to cloudy skies in Birmingham yesterday morning and England took advantage but there’s bright sunshine today.

Showers are forecast today, however, and will likely interrupt play, particularly this afternoon.

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

England did so much well on day two of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston that the missed opportunities will really frustrate them.

If either team can gain a lead of 50 runs on this pitch it will be crucial.

There is almost no seam or swing, but there are signs of uneven bounce and the surface is starting to turn, most notably with Moeen Ali's vicious delivery to bowl Cameron Green.

Had Jonny Bairstow not missed his stumping and dropped a catch, had Stuart Broad not overstepped when bowling Usman Khawaja, England would have been in the driving seat to gain that advantage.

Instead, with Australia 82 runs behind England with five wickets remaining, it is anybody's game.

England wasted chances and were defied by a classy century from Australia's Usman Khawaja on a riveting second day of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

Khawaja batted throughout the day for his unbeaten 126, the left-hander's first Ashes ton in England guiding Australia to 311-5, just 82 runs adrift.

He was bowled by a Stuart Broad no-ball on 112, one of four errors from England that also included Jonny Bairstow missing two opportunities behind the stumps.

In an electrifying morning session, England used favourable overhead conditions to reduce the tourists to 67-3 in reply to their 393-8 declared.

No one really knew how much Ben Stokes would be able to bowl in this series.

It's still unclear but even if his spells are short and infrequent, if they produce key wickets in the way he managed yesterday to remove Steve Smith that might be enough for England...

That Moeen Ali dismissal of Cameron Green brought back memories of Graeme Swann's brilliant ball to bowl Ricky Ponting back in 2009.

Moeen Ali's figures of 2-124 from 29 overs don't tell the whole story.

In his first Test for two years, the all-rounder bowled well despite Australia's attempts to put him under pressure, created chances and the delivery to bowl Cameron Green was an absolute peach!

England aren't in a terrible positions but it could be a whole lot better had they not passed up a number of good opportunities on day two.

Australia might have edged day two but it was England who made the better start.

Two wickets in two balls from Stuart Broad saw David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne depart early in the day.

What a day of Ashes cricket we had on day two!

Key wickets, fantastic batting and a few missed chances as well - but, ultimately, the day belonged to Usman Khawaja.

The Australia hit his first century in England and will resume on 126 this morning.
