  1. wicket

WICKET Carter c Guest b Scrimshaw 56published at 17:36 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Sussex 306-6 v Derbyshire

Another wicket for Derbyshire as Oli Carter is 'strangled' down the leg-side off George Scrimshaw, who is bowling round the wicket.

A disappointing way for his 127-ball innings to end but Sussex have their second batting point.

  2. Bad light stops play at Blackpoolpublished at 17:35 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Lancs v Essex 12-1

    Would you believe it!

After waiting so long for play to presume, just three balls are bowled by Tom Bailey to Tom Westley before the umpires decides play isn't good enough to continue.

What a shame for Blackpool CC, who have waited 12 years to stage another first-class game.

  3. Postpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Surrey 267-6 v Notts

Matthew Montgomery comes up for his fifth over of the day - still searching for his maiden first-class wicket.

It's a decent enough over, with just a couple of singles from it, and there are 12 more before the close.

    Yorkshire 142-0 v Worcestershire

They ARE going to play again at New Road.

Three hours and fifty minutes after they went off - and just 15 minutes before the key 6.00 shutdown, by which time play would have to have been called off for the day, if they were not already out there.

Both teams are no doubt thrilled. The pressbox occupants less so.

We may yet go back on. Could be a 50-50 call here.

"The Middlesex players clearly don't want to come off.

"The umps are still in the middle."

  6. 50 runs

for Kasey Aldridgepublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Somerset 187-5 v Hampshire

James Rew (71) and Kasey Aldridge (51) have added 106 in 22.3 overs.

Aldridge reaches his third first class half-century in his 22nd innings thanks to James Vince shying at the stumps as Aldridge attempted a single and the ball fizzing away for four overthrows. They all count.

73 balls and seven fours in that knock.

  7. Postpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

Game on - again - at Blackpool.

Tom Bailey has five balls left to complete the over he had just begun this morning when rain forced the players off.

Tom Westley and Alastair Cook are the not out pair.

  8. rain stops play

Helm strays to leg and McManus clips the ball away for three behind square.

Ooh-er. We have drizzle, and perhaps a bit more than that here now.

    And we're off.

    They're off at Worcester . . . and Worcesterpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Yorkshire 142-0 v Worcestershire

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at New Road

The frustrations of trying to watch cricket on a rain-interrupted day have been beautifully summed up today in Worcester.

The players went off at New Road at 1.55.

But, just half a mile back upstream on the River Severn lies Worcester Racecourse, at Pitchcroft, on the opposite bank.

Just 10 minutes later, the first race on the seven-race card went off at 2.05.

And the last - the 5.25 at Worcester - has just gone.off, while the umpires at New Road deliberate on what to do next.

So, if they do come back on again tonight, that would mean anyone sufficiently interested in both cricket and racing - and once upon a time that would have included both dressing roums and the umps too - could have watched an entire afternoon's racing!

All about horses for courses, I suppose.

  10. Southern rain hits the northpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Gloucestershire 280-6 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

I have kept an eye on scorecards further south today and noticed the rain affecting a number of games. And it's finally reached the North East.

There were 22.1 overs left when the umpires took the players off at 5.05pm. It just looked like a spot of drizzle then, but it has got heavier since and looks to have set in for the next few hours. And this is not the bad bit on the radar either!

The big covers are now coming on and I am not sure we will see much more in the way of play in Chester-le-Street today. The irony is, it appears lighter than it has for much of the afternoon and the cloud base is much higher. Strange thing, weather.

    Middlesex v Northants 181-6

Zaib drives a full and wide ball from Bamber through mid off for four runs. Lovely shot.

No evidence of any problems gripping the bat since he took a blow to the glove at the start of the over.

Tom Helm will bowl down the hill with the new ball.

  12. James Rew passes 800 runs...published at 17:28 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Somerset 177-5 v Hampshire

... in his 15th knock of the season.

He's onto 71 and now the leading run-scorer in Divison One, ahead of Essex's Tom Westley, who is off for rain, and nearly 200 ahead of James Vince, who is stood 10 feet away from Rew at slip.

Some player. A wicket-keeper too, I should mention. Hmm...

Rew was born in January 2004. Pretty sure I've got T-shirts older than that!

  13. ouch!

And straight away, Zaib gets a ball that rises sharply off a length and thuds into his glove.

    That's going to sting.

There's going to be a pause in play while Zaib gathers his thoughts with McManus and the umpires have a chat.

It's gloomy for sure, but good enough for play to continue.

  14. Hutton bravery in vainpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Surrey 262-6 v Notts

    Oh dear.

Brett Hutton, who went off earlier with a hamstring injury, sends down a full toss at the start of a new spell, which Sean Abbott hits for four, and immediately slumps to the floor.

That is surely the end of day one for the Notts seamer.

The new ball wasn't taken for that delivery and spinner Calvin Harrison will finish the over.

  15. new ball

New ball taken at Merchant Taylors'published at 17:23 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 177-6

Ooh! Zaib ducks away from a bouncer but the bat is left pointing to the skies - and the ball flies off an edge through third man for one.

    Frustration for Roland-Jones.

Ethan Bamber has taken the new cherry.

More covers are coming on and the light if anything has declined since we went off for rain a few minutes ago.

That might be that for day one.

  17. Division Two updatepublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

Sussex have lost their fifth wicket against Derbyshire at Hove, with Dan Ibrahim caught be Haider Ali off George Scrimshaw for 13.

He can hardly believe it. It was a short ball and if he'd hit his pull shot anywhere else, it would have been four.

Sussex are 293-5 after 79 overs, with Oli Carter - on 55 not out - now together with Fynn Hudson-Prentice.

Just a couple of runs from the Roland-Jones over.

McManus defends carefully, dropping the ball down, out of the reach of Robson at short leg.

This pair will need to try and protect the tail from the new ball - due after one more over.

  19. First batting point for D1 leaderspublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Surrey 252-6 v Notts

A single for Sean Abbott from a reverse sweep off Matthew Montgomery secures Surrey's first batting point. How many more can they add before their first innings comes to an end?

  20. wicket

WICKET Rhodes c Cox b Qadri 25published at 17:15 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Kent 171 v Warwickshire 107-2

Kent have brought on spinner Hamid Qadri and he has struck in his second over, tempting Will Rhodes forward only to feather an edge to keeper Jordan Cox.

He'll feel he's missed a chance to cash in on what looks a placid track.

Sam Hain arrives at the crease. The deficit is 64. Rob Yates has a patient 36 at the other end. Still very much Warwickshire in the box seat.
