  1. rain stops play

It's raining again at Worcesterpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Yorkshire 142-0 v Worcestershire

No sooner had they got all the covers off at New Road than they were wheeled back on again.

The poor groundstaff are being made to work hard for their money today.

    Here come the umpires . . .

  2. Postpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 174-6

Long off and long on are right back on the ropes for De Caires and Zaib drives the off spinner for a single.

A big LBW appeal against McManus, who misses a reverse sweep but is saved by a the bottom edge of the blade.

A very handy unbroken partnership of 39 for the 7th, but Northants need more.

  3. Postpublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Surrey 245-6 v Notts

That may be the best shot of the day.

Lyndon James overpitches and Sean Abbott strokes it back past the stumps with perfect timing and away for four.

Abbott is 16 not out and Jordan Clark has 72.

There are four overs to the new ball for the walking wounded from Trent Bridge.

  4. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Durhampublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Durham v Glos 280-6

It's come a little later than we expected but the drizzle is here now at a rather gloomy Riverside.

The concern is more likely to be over the light.

Pity as this has been a compelling day's play where Gloucester threatened to post a big total and have been gradually pegged back by Durham.

  5. Close of play at Cardiffpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Glamorgan v Leicestershire

What a shame. Bad light prevented the planned 16:30 BST start and a poor forecast for rain in the next couple of hours has prompted the decision to abandon the day's play without a ball being bowled.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Glamorgan will begin their innings, weather permitting, tomorrow morning, with David Lloyd and Michael Neser back in their ranks.

  6. Latest from Blackpoolpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Lancs v Essex 12-1

We had 4.1 overs of play this morning - and it looks like the efforts of the Stanley Park groundstaff have paid off and we are going to see some more play.

Essex will resume their first innings at 5.30pm with 16 overs to be bowled. A testing min-session ahead for Alastair Cook and Tom Westley against a fresh Lancashire attack.

  7. 100 runs

up for Warwickshirepublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Kent 171 v Warwickshire 100-1

Very sedate evening session at Canterbury where there is no real peril for the visitors.

The plan for them is surely to bat once, bat big and try to bowl Kent out for a second time on days three and four for an innings win. Simple game, eh?

Lefties Rob Yates (36) and WIll Rhodes (18) have guided Bears into three figures and brought the deficit down to 71. 25 overs left today.

  8. Zaib attackspublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 173-6

De Caires is back into the attack and the second ball of his spell is lofted over his head and down the ground for four runs, as Northants try to attack before the second new ball - due in five overs.

A sweep behind square brings four more.

  9. Postpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Durham v Glos 278-6

Shaw picks up his first boundary with a lofted drive over Parkinson's head and down the ground for four runs.

The partnership with Zafar is now worth 17.

Better news at New Roadpublished at 17:03 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Yorkshire 142-0 v Worcestershire

Remarkably, it may not be all over for the day at New Road, despite a three-hour rain break.

It has stopped raining, the covers are coming off - and umpires David Millns and Chris Watts will inspect at 5.15

  11. Postpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 165-6

Zaib defends Roland-Jones on the back foot, as the bowler runs back to his mark.

A single off the fourth ball, worked around the corner.

  12. 50 runs

for Oli Carterpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Sussex 285-4 v Derbyshire

    Crunch!

Luis Reece is short and wide and Oli Carter channels his inner Gordon Greenidge/Robin Smith (remember them?) and cuts powerfully for four to reach a 103-ball half-century.

It's his fifth of a productive season and he's not far short of 500 Championship runs in 2023 now.

  13. Postpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Durham v Glos 270-6

Reportedly there's an 80% chance of rain in the local area in about an hour.

It's pretty gloomy here and bad light may be a problem before then.

We're fine for now though - and Zafar forces Raine away through the off side for three.

  14. Postpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Surrey 236-6 v Notts

Width again from Dane Paterson and Jordan Clark dabs it down to third man with excellent timing as he progresses to 70 not out.

Looks like it's time for Paterson to take a short breather with the new ball only weight overs away now.

  15. Postpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 164-6

A lovely shot from Zaib, who is well forward to Helm, driving the Middlesex pace man down the ground for four runs.

McManus tries to force Higgins away off the back foot and misses outside off.

Still plenty of bounce and carry here - with a ball in its 73rd over.

Two runs pushed away to square leg.

  16. Tea at Tauntonpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Somerset 165-5 v Hampshire

James Rew and Kasey Aldridge have added 88 in less than 18 overs together and changed the complexion of this game.

Kyle Abbott has 4-20 from 10 overs, and a run-out, but might have had Aldridge for eight, had James Vince held on at slip.

From 41-4 and 80-5 Somerset are 165-5 at tea. There is weather around in the west country, fingers crossed we get some of the 28 remaining overs after tea.

  17. Postpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Durham v Glos 264-6

Josh Shaw is getting into line nicely, defending against Ben Raine.

Durham have exerted more control in this session of play, where the run rate has dipped below four an over.

He rides the bounce to take a single off the fifth ball and Zafar keeps the strike with a push to mid wicket for one.

  18. Division Two updatepublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

Oli Carter pulls Luis Reece for four and now has 39 out of Sussex's 269-4 against Derbyshire at Hove.

No joy yet at Cardiff and Worcester where the weather is keeping the players off the field.

They have at least had some play at New Road, where Yorkshire are 142-0 in the 31st over.

  19. Postpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Middlesex v Northants 158-6

Higgins is bowling a tight line just outside off and is proving to be very difficult to get away.

Solid defending by Lewis McManus. Maiden - and Middlesex have the option of a new ball in nine overs.

  20. Postpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 10 July 2023

    Surrey 227-6 v Notts

It should be remembered that Jordan Clark is a good enough bat to have scored two first-class centuries.

He likes a bit of width and chops Dane Paterson down to third man for four.

There are 10 overs to go before Notts can take the new ball.
