A lot of runs in some of our games on the final day, but Essex were the only winners - and they didn't score any of them.

Lancashire made a great effort to chase down 430 at Stanley Park, but were finally bowled out for 383 despite Rob Jones' 111.

There was a thrilling draw with the scores level at Merchant Taylors' School as Sam Robson hit an unbeaten 126 for Middlesex.

Elsewhere there were centuries for Derbyshire's Leus du Plooy - who now has over 900 runs for the season - and Leicestershire opener Rishi Patel.

Thanks for your company over the past four days. See you next time.

Surrey's lead in Division One is now down to 13 points following Essex's dramatic victory over Lancashire and their own draw with Notts.

Warwickshire have moved up a place to third - and have a game in hand - following their innings victory at Canterbury on Friday, 23 points behind the leaders, with Hampshire three points further back.

At the bottom, the dramatic draw between Middlesex and Northants did neither of them any favours - although they have closed the gap on eighth-placed Kent.

In Division Two, Durham go into next week's trip to Derby with a 47 point lead over Leicestershire.

  5. DERBYSHIRE DRAW WITH SUSSEXpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 13 July 2023

    Derbys 361-8 - chasing 380

A day which will not be forgotten by anyone present at Hove. More than 550 runs scored and 13 wickets fell.

Leus du Plooy made everyone associated with Derbyshire dream of completing the greatest chase in the club's history but eventually departed for 128 from 117 balls.

Earlier James Coles amassed a landmark 180 as Sussex declared on 384-9, leaving Derbyshire this 58-over chase, which ultimately proved in vain.

12 points apiece but they both deserve more.

Cricket was the winner of this one.

A draw with the scores tied. A draining day's play for both teams. Over to you, Andrew Radd...

"I don't whether anybody will be able to stand up long enough for the post match interview. But we'll try."

    Derbys 361-8 - 19 needed off 6 balls

George Scrimshaw can't score off his first ball but squirts one down to fine leg from his second.

Sam Conners defends the third ball. Did Scrimshaw come out with a message? Do they hold what they have? 20 needed off eight balls.

Conners takes an easy single and it looks like not losing is more important than chasing history now.

Final ball of the over is defended.

They want to survive the final six balls of this breathless encounter.

    Derbys 359-8 - 21 needed off 11 balls

Alex Thomson slog-sweeps to the square leg rope where Daniel Ibrahim takes another catch.

George Grimshaw comes out to bat having been banned from bowling all day.

  9. Postpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 13 July 2023

    Derbys 359-7 - 21 needed off 12 balls

Single for Conners who then turns dow a second after Alex Thomson drove nicely.

Conners clips a single to long leg then Thomson does likewise to rotate the strike.

Conners mistimes a pull off Henry Shipley but runs a single after the ball runs away from the keeper and Thomson glances to long leg to leave his side needing...

    21 off 12 balls.

All four results still possible with two overs of this four-day match remaining.

  10. MIDDLESEX DRAW WITH NORTHANTSpublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 13 July 2023
    Breaking

    Middlesex 322-6 - target 323

What to do here? Big chat with Taylor, Procter and McManus.

    Almost everyone on the ropes.

Driven to deep mid wicket. Emilio Gay fields.

Two run. It's a draw with the scores level!

    What a game!

Middlesex needed eight an over at one stage - then Middlesex captain Toby Roland-Jones blasted 34 off 18 balls. From that point the chase was very much on and Northants had to go fully defensive to save the game.

Sam Robson drags what must be weary legs off the field unbeaten on 126.

Double strike for Sanderson to remove Stoneman and Malan in successive balls, but the game changed with the older ball with which wickets were harder to come by.

Somehow Northants managed to defend 12 runs off the last two overs. But they couldn't get past Robson and De Caires after the wicket of Roland-Jones.

Conners blazes through and dives to get back to the non-striker's end for a two after Thomson drove into the covers.

Nathan McAndrew beats the bat with the final ball, a slower delivery.

Sam Conners is the new man.

  18. Postpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 13 July 2023

    Middlesex 313-6 - target 323 (6 balls left)

A glass of water comes out for Robson. I'd need something stronger!

    He'll face Sanderson - 117 not out.

Single to cover, overthrow and that's two! That will hurt Northants.

Sanderson goes wide and its a dot ball. Next ball keeps low and Robson crouches to block it.

Short ball! Past Robson, McManus shies at the stumps and misses.

Fifth ball is driven through mid on for one. A huge swing through mid off and that's one more.

    10 needed off six.

32 needed from 24 balls to complete the biggest chase in Derbyshire history.

    Magnificent cricket.
