Edge found... but so is the boundary. A big drive from Steve Smith but the ball squirms off the edge and between the slips and gully for four.
Stuart Broad is warming up so it looks like he'll share this new ball.

I don't mind that actually, especially if you've only got 10 minutes left of play. Hopefully if Robinson hits those same lengths, we will get a bit of movement.
Ollie Robinson will get to use the second new ball. Steve Smith is on strike. Let's see if England can sneak one more before the close.
Good over from Joe Root, just a single from it.
We've got six minutes left in the day. Time for one, maybe two overs.
Well, Charlie, promising spinner Joe Root will continue. England hold off on taking the second new ball for now.

It seems to me that Joe Root has lived Steve Smith's career but in reverse. Steve Smith went from being a promising spinner to a world-class batsman. Joe Root has gone from world-class batsman to promising spinner.

Smith 79, Carey 10
Another inside edge, another smidgen of luck for an Australian batter.
It's Alex Carey this time and the ball goes between his leg for a single. Not as close to a drag-on as a few others we've seen today.
Over bowled, the new ball is being taken out. Will England take it though? Will they be allowed to bowl their seamers if they do?

Rocky: Working from home today, watched five hours of England slowly taking wickets. Nipped out for a food shop and two fall in three balls. You’re welcome.

The shadows around all of the players now are all visible. You would imagine Australia would be asking the question about light. England may consider not taking the new ball, but in these conditions, if they are allowed to bowl with the new ball, it would hoop around.

The Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge last year, England opted to bowl and New Zealand scored 553, England replied with 539. New Zealand scored 284 in the second innings before England chased it with a run-a-ball 299.
Joe Root does his bit for the over rate as he rattles through another one. Just two singles from it.
The second new ball is due after the next over. The way the light is looking, England might not be allowed to bowl their seamers if they do take it.

And all of a sudden, people's optimism is back. We are so easily unnerved as England fans.

Someone once said "add 2 wickets to that score".

That's the 16th time England have won the toss at Lord's and chosen to bowl. It's the first time where the scoreboard has had 300 runs on it with only three wickets taken.
Let's not get too carried away, in no way has this been a good day for England. But if - somehow - they could manage to dismiss Steve Smith before stumps then suddenly it wouldn't look quite so bad...
What were we worried about?!
A far less dramatic over from Joe Root this time.
Just three singles from it as Australia try to restore a bit of calm after giving England - who looked out on their feet and out of ideas - a timely boost.

Mark Poole: England missed out massively in the first Test and now are paying the price. Poor from England today. Don’t see a way back with the momentum fully with Australia.
I'm not picking on you, Mark, we had plenty of messages in the same vein before those two quick wickets.
Turns out the way back was bowling the part-time spinner and letting Australia give a couple of wickets away...

There have already been four stumpings in this series, there had only been three in the last four Ashes series in England before this one.
Steve Smith is still there so there is still an element of control and composure at the crease for Australia.
He nudges Ollie Robinson for one before Alex Carey drives nicely to end the over. He gets three and that will keep left-hander on strike. Joe Root will be happy about that.
