Ben Duckett was comfortably back. Everybody knew it but the third umpire wanted to make absolutely sure.

The left-hander was out of his crease for a moment but by the time Alex Carey took the bails, he was safe.

We're going upstairs for a possible stumping after Ben Duckett misses with a sweep off Nathan Lyon.

Did he overbalance and leave his ground? Australia don't seem particularly confident but we'll have a look.

  3. Eng 78-0published at 15 overs

Australia's boundary riders are being kept busy at the moment with Ben Duckett punching the ball confidently either side of the wicket.

Defensive maybe but it's saving runs.

Ben Duckett showed over the winter that he is a big fan of a sweep shot - and he utilises it to perfection here.

Tossed up by Nathan Lyon and the England opener belts it through mid-wicket. There's no fielder out there, four more.

That is a beautiful shot from Zak Crawley!

Too full from Josh Hazlewood and the ball is driven back past him, through straight mid-on for four.

Shot of the day? It's right up there.

Banged in short by Josh Hazlewood and it's pulled away for four!

Zak Crawley was onto it in a flash! There are two men out there but it was in the gap for another boundary.

This is England's highest home opening partnership in an Ashes Test since Joe Root and Sir Alastair Cook who scored 68 together at The Oval in 2013.

  13. dropped catch

    Eng 58-0published at 12 overs

Close! Are we calling that a drop? How harsh am I feeling? It is Steve Smith...

Not harsh enough - a half chance at best. Zak Crawley goes down early to try and reverse sweep Nathan Lyon.

Smith anticipates it at slip and moves around but the ball comes at him quickly, flicks off a combination of his finger tips and his knee. Just a single.

Nathan Lyon is coming on to bowl now. Based on CricViz's captaincy grid, which ranks each bowler's ability against each batter, Lyon is deemed as one of the best two options to bowl at Ben Duckett. Cameron Green is the other.

Zak Crawley has certainly started on the front foot, with just one of his 32 runs scored backward or square of the wicket so far.

Seven from Josh Hazlewood's first over and it looks like we're going to see another bowling.

We are indeed. Nathan Lyon is coming on for an early bowl. We did see the ball turn for Joe Root yesterday.

What can the Aussie spinner do in his 100 consecutive Test?

Change of bowling, Josh Hazlewood is into the attack... and Ben Duckett crashes his first ball through the covers for four.

That brings up the fifty partnership and in typically good time. England will be delighted with this start. But it is just a start.
