    Headingley and special moments.

    What a place.

  2. 'England can win the Ashes'published at 15:55 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

England captain Ben Stokes has been speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "Not good for the old age stuff is it?!

"It's completely different when it's out of your control. I just sat up there thinking about what would I be doing if I was out there. Brooky controlled the game very, very well.

I'm just tired, it's been draining."

On Harry Brook: "Under the pressure and circumstance of the series, that contribution got us over the line. There were some smaller ones, Woakesy, Woody going down in that blaze of glory.

"But Brooky has got a very good head on his shoulders, he's a very talented boy, we've let him propel himself."

On Moeen Ali batting three: "Mo came up to Baz and said, let me have a go at three. Free hit is not the right word, but we thought he could have more influence at three then eight.

"It didn't work, but I loved that Mo took that responsibility."

On comparisons to 2019: "Headingley day four, yet again, it's some place to play cricket. I don't know what it is, it seems to bring out great games."

Can England win the Ashes?: "Yep. No hesitation."

What a return to Test cricket.

Mark Wood is player of the match.

What an impact in his first game, with both bat and ball.

"It's absolutely too soon to call me an all-rounder," he says. Hero.

Test cricket is still the ultimate format for me and we have to look after it. It's been a great series.

If you have series like this, people are going to flock through the gates.

That's three Ashes Tests at Headingley in 2001, 2019 and now 2023 and they have all been amazing.

Harry Brook speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "I don't think I can quite believe it yet, to do it here in front of my home crowd.

"It's a phenomenal win and sets up the rest of the series.

"I always had belief. When we lost Stokesy and Bairstow, there was a little bit of doubt but I had to bat through with Woakesy and did that.

"I felt like they were trying to get me off strike, but I managed to put a couple of bad balls away.

"I had a bit of a blow up [when I got out], but there was no one there. I'm so happy now.

We've got a week and a bit off now, rest up, have some down time."

Fantastic. Both teams have produced three games of cricket you only dream of commentating on.

The two players out there haven't played any cricket. Not even four-day stuff, and Chris Woakes hasn't played a Test match since March 2022.

Mark Wood since the back end of last year. Stuart Broad said England would approach this like a 50-over match and they have won it in the 50th over!

That is an incredible moment as Chris Woakes smashes that ball through the covers, as it mirrors almost exactly Ben Stokes' shot four years ago.

He stands, arms aloft, soaking in the noise as the stands rise with him.

Woakes and Wood were the late heroes, but don't forget local lad Harry Brook with that 75.

Don't go anywhere - we'll bring you all the best reaction as we have it.

Credit where credit is due - the selectors (or Baz/Stokes) got it spot on picking Woakes.

    Ollie, Hoxton

Once again, Woakes has shown he is worth his weight in gold with the bat.

Well done Chris Woakes. What an underrated gem he is.

    WOAKSY!! Absolutely an underrated legend!!

    That was incredible.

What is it about Headingley?! Everyone is on their feet.

Chris Woakes finishes unbeaten on 32, and Mark Wood with 16.

The two men in their first Test of the series. What a contribution.

That was Scott Boland's catch. I know Alex Carey went for it but it was Boland's all day long. Carey was coming whatever, though.

Slogged high in the air and dropped by Carey!

The keeper sprints almost to the boundary whereas Scott Boland at deep third doesn't even move?!

    They take the single.

    Over to you, Chris Woakes.
