  1. 'Definitely a bowling day'published at 10:49 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

    Glenn McGrath
Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Stuart Broad was swinging it massively so there is a chance that someone like Mitchell Starc could get it swinging.

It is definitely a bowling day.

Interestingly, Moeen Ali had a very long net earlier. Longer than any other England player, in fact. It would be peak Bazball to catch the Aussies off guard and send him in at three with a licence.

  3. 'Overheads keep everyone excited'published at 10:46 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

Australia batter Travis Head talking to BBC Test Match Special: "It is a huge day ahead. We'll knuckle down to what we've done really well for a long period of time now. We'll look to get the ball in the right areas and ask questions and it looks to be a nice morning for bowling.

"The clouds are out and traditionally overheads have been spoke about here. It is nice to some clouds around! It keeps everyone interested and it is an exciting day for both teams.

"Both teams in parts of the games would have liked 40-50 more runs in every innings that we've had. England would have said that at Edgbaston and at Lord's last week. We can challenge enough and the scores have been pretty similar."

How is the pitch playing: "It's hard for me to answer because I've only faced bouncers for the whole game! It did swing around and do a little bit yesterday when the ball was in the right areas so it is important that we start well this morning. England will come hard and it will create opportunities. If they do get a flier is about putting the ball in the right areas and creating some pressure and hope that we can create 10 opportunities."

On England's short-pitch bowling: "I enjoyed the battle. It is uncomfortable and trying to fight through them. England's plans to seem to be not going away from that but I'm trying to battle through it and contribute in some way. It is nice to contribute, I would have loved to get 20-30 more."

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I'm watching the Australia bowlers warm up at the moment and the ball is swinging.

Don't rule out someone like Mitchell Marsh having a big say today. I was surprised he didn't bowl more in the first innings.

I'm guessing an average of 19 from 2015. Rising to 37 under stokes.

    Scott in Cornwall

32.1 Bazball. 21.2 previously? Which means either way we win today. Right? Right?!?

  6. 'We would have dreaded this chase'published at 10:41 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

This England side are great chasers. They love chasing and have chased this amount of runs, or more, four times now. Back in my day we'd be dreading trying to get 250 in the second innings on day four or five. This England side seem to embrace it so this is the opportunity they have been dreaming of.

There have been five successful run chases of 250 or more at Headingley. Three of those have been by England - in 2001, 2019 and 2022.

The most memorable of them is immortalised on an electric box outside of Headingley.

    42 since bazball, 17 before?

    Lewis, Brighton

Morning Andy, I reckon the average is 28 in the S&M era and 19 before that.

    Bernie

Judging by us roughly hitting 300 ish per innings, im going for 29.6 for S&M era, a mere 21.5 for the last 7 years.

  9. 'Sunny spells but heavy rain possible from 15:00 BST'published at 10:34 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

    Simon King
    BBC weather presenter and meteorologist

Yesterday was awful. Today is more straightforward. It should be dry for most of the day. There should be some sunny spells too but some showers might arrive from 15:00-16:00 BST onwards. They will be hit and miss though so there are no guarantees it will hit Headingley. They could be heavy and thundery.

What seems like Australia's entire squad, backroom staff, and coaches are all together in the middle of the ground at Headingley having a meeting.

They could retain the Ashes today, lest we forget.

There was a lot, and I mean a lot, of rain here last night. I got absolutely soaked walking back to my car.

Will that have any impact? Michael Vaughan reckons it’s bad news for England if there’s moisture in the outfield.

I'm guessing 35 runs per 4th innings wicket in the Bazball era, vs a paltry 18 in the seven years previous

    Rob C, Great Bookham

    S&M era 27. Previously 21.

    Chris Morris

Post 2022 average 31.4 runs. Pre 2022 19.5 runs. Today will be 251 runs per wicket.

This Ashes series has been so strange. Neither side has been able to nail down the opposition when they have been ahead so there could be a twist in it. But I think England will get over the line.

With more than an hour until play starts, the stands are sparsely populated for now but you can already feel expectation, excitement and no little nervousness in the air.

  19. 'Another epic in store...'published at 10:03 British Summer Time 9 July 2023

I suspect my colleague Matthew Henry had a Steve Smith-esque night of broken sleep last night. He has written a piece after the close yesterday looking forward to what could go down as another Test match for ages.

He wrote: "As the gloom turned to late evening sunshine, a pocket of England's most vocal fans got to their feet. 'Don't take me home. Please don't take me home,' they sang.

"That song has become an anthem of English sport but some of those supporters would probably stay true to their word - camp out on the famous Western Terrace if they could.

"Headingley has another epic in store. There is something about the Ashes and Sundays. The finales at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge in 2005, Ben Stokes' epic here in Leeds in 2019 and Lord's dramatic conclusion last week - was that really just last week? - all happened on the supposed day of rest.

"You just know there will be nothing restful about Sunday. It will be yet another day of squirming in your seat."
