He should now put the bat under his arm and walk off. Thank you and goodnight!

    Eng 395-9published at 81 overs

Don't need to run, after all.

Broad clubs one into the stands for six! And in true Broad style, he stands and admires his work.

Declare on that? Wouldn't that be a way to finish.

Broad is swinging for everything, but they're not running any.

This is a bit odd. Why are they still batting if they're not taking the runs?

Plonked into the off side, there's an easy single there for the taking but Anderson is having none of it!

    Over to you, Broady.

    That was emotional!

But I think that's the end of the emotion as Broad has got to face Mitchell Starc.

I wonder what kind of salute David Warner will give Stuart Broad? A nice wave?

    Here we go.

The Australia players form a tunnel for Broad, who must be loving this - especially walking out there with his best mate Jimmy.

Broad was always the Ashes' fiercest competitor but you can clearly see the respect that they all have for him, and he has for them.

The Oval applauds, stands, and he soaks it all in. Anderson gives him a hug, before Broad walks out by himself, a big grin on his face.

    What a lovely moment.

  10. 'He's given everything to the game'published at 10:57 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I think last night everyone was surprised and there was a murmur around the ground but I think Stuart Broad has got it absolutely spot on. This is someone who has given so much to the game, the commitment and dedication.

To think Stuart got the opportunity to end on a high, a full house at the Oval, a venue that he has had so much success at, is amazing. I think Broady is right next to Ian Botham being Mr. Ashes, and what a way for him to say goodbye to him. He'll have a huge role in broadcasting and I'm sure England will be picking his brain in years to come about his skill.

He's about to come out and bat with his best mate and then will have time with the ball. I don't think we will see a seam bowling partnership quite like Broad and Anderson again because of the way cricket is going with franchise cricket. It's going to be an incredible occasion.

But the weather should be okay for this morning, and the Australian players are currently walking down the Oval steps which suggests that England's last pair of Broad and Anderson are going to come out and bat - and Broad will probably get a guard of honour.

And hopefully later today, we get Broad v Warner for the last time.

  12. 'I really want England to win it'published at 10:51 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

More from Carol, Stuart Broad's mum, on BBC Test Match Special speaking about Broad's childhood: "He never broke a window and we never had any ornaments. We had a floodlight put in so he could play at night. His bat was precious. Gemma trained him, she could catch better than him.

"It's their story, it's about people and the comradery we have as parents is immense.

"They can be what they want to be and if you want to, you're going to do it. You don't need your mum to say it. I'd always say to him: "Did you enjoy it?"

"He was like me, I was tiny as a short teenager and then shot up and the same happened to Stuart, he grew six inches in a year.

"If I look at Cook or Anderson, I get very emotional. When the hard bits come, it's all about people. He told me he doesn't want a fuss but I thought, I want him to have a fuss!

"The first day I saw him come down the stairs I got a tingle and I still get that. I just really want them to win."

  13. 'Stuart is a master of making the right decision'published at 10:48 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

Carol, Stuart Broad's mum, on BBC Test Match Special: "We want to win it today. We knew for certain in the morning, our lips were sealed but yesterday was a great batting day so I had something to focus on. Of course you have conversations but Stuart is a master of making the right decision and he's done it again. It's the perfect time. It's his story to tell which is why I won't talk about it.

"He is feisty in everything but not feisty at home. In anything, he is competitive and he doesn't like coming second. I don't know what it is about the Ashes, it's just something extra special and I've always said to him you know you can carry on when you tingle when you walk on to the pitch.

"For years, he always wanted a ball for his birthday. He's played all sports and he has something extra that every person in this field does."

    Darren Bett
    BBC weather presenter

The weather is going downhill, the best of the weather is now. We'll see light rain and drizzle after lunch and it gets worse. It could be a bit disappointing because bad light could come into play. Tomorrow is better and the rain should clear away overnight.

Too kind, Tom - thank you!

We're clearly in for an emotional rollercoaster at the end of this Test match, but that may not actually be today.

The weather forecast is not looking great in London for this afternoon, but tomorrow is looking clearer.

In about 25 minutes Stuart Broad will stride out into the middle for one last time.

It is going to be emotional.

  20. Daily ZaltzQuiz answerpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

    Andy Zaltzman
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

    Answer: 2.7

In total, from 1950-51 to 2021-22, there were 102 instances of England players making 300 runs in an Ashes series. In the last series in Australia, only Joe Root (322) made over 300. In the victorious 2015 home series, only Cook and Root passed 300, and in the catastrophic 2013-14 drubbing, no England player made 300. The 2009 England victory saw just captain Andrew Strauss score 300, and England managed to retain the Ashes in a 2-2 draw in 1972 despite none of their players either reaching 300 for the series or scoring a century.

Four Australians have reached 300 this series (Khawaja, Labuschagne, Smith and Head). If Marsh (currently on 244), Warner (225) or Carey (172) can join them, it will be the first Ashes series ever in which more than 10 players have scored at least 300.
