It is official I am old. A player younger than me is retiring. Hopefully Broady can pick up one last five-fer and give us one of those spells. And of course get Warner nicking off.

As England have shown it's a good pitch. I like the way Khawaja played that first ball too, it shows some positivity there.

Very little to trouble Warner and Khawaja at the moment.

As is so often the case with cricket, we've constantly got one eye on the clouds above and it does seem to be getting a little greyer...

Did Broad's bail switching lead to Labuschagne wicket?

Stuart Broad has been a champion cricket for many, many years. The ultimate competitor and an absolute master in the dark arts. He'll be missed, but the intoxicating memories he created will endue for decades.

Australia take another five runs from Jimmy Anderson's first over.

His family are in attendance, and his daughters have stuck a banner on one of the windows with 'Happy Birthday Dad' painted on.

Too cute. This day is playing with all our emotions.

We haven't seen enough of that from David Warner, it was a glorious cover drive. It's a lot of runs to get for Australia but they will be thinking they want to knock them off and have champagne all the way home.

David Warner drives sweetly through the covers for four, and I suspect he will be absolutely desperate to rain all over Broad's parade.

    A positive start for Australia.

The crowd claps Broad in, the drama building... but David Warner is off the mark first ball.

It's not the main story today but don't forget this will be David Warner's last innings in England too.

I wonder what reception he'll get if/when he gets out. He's been booed enough. It might be time to say goodbye with applause.

Stuart Broad leads England out onto the pitch, in his trademark bandana, and he is going to take the first over.

And look who's facing the first ball for Australia...

I was applying sun cream 20 minutes ago. Now think clouds have rolled in. It's like Broad has them on speed dial today.

So after all that, England are all out for 395.

Mitchell Starc took 4-100 and Todd Murphy 3-110, while Joe Root top-scored for England with 91, Zak Crawley added 73 and Jonny Bairstow 78.

Stuart Broad finishes eight not out, hitting his last ball faced for six - which is probably exactly what he planned.

Jonathan Agnew has been checking his apps all morning and warns us that rain is coming in 23 minutes...

    It's Stuart Broad's 55th six for England.

Only four players have hit more sixes for England in Tests: Ben Stokes, Kevin Pietersen, Andrew Flintoff and Ian Botham.

    And that's that.

What a weird passage of play. England added six from one shot after turning down a fair few singles.

But Stuart Broad has hit his last ball in Test cricket for six, so that's something.

And after a start that belonged to Broad, Australia need 384 to win.

Anderson reverse sweeps again, is given out, and sends it for a review.

How many of these did we have yesterday?

  19. Eng 395-9published at 81.2 overs

    Yeah, this is weird.

Jimmy Anderson nails a reverse sweep to the deep square fielder, and doesn't run. Have England made a vow to only deal in boundaries this morning?

    I'll keep count.

And now Jimmy Anderson has been given a rendition of Happy Birthday. What a day.
