  1. England have chance to level seriespublished at 09:21 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

While today is about Stuart Broad, we mustn't forget that it is also a huge opportunity for England to level the series and deny Australia a first away Ashes series win since 2001.

The home side dominated day three, piling up 389-9, a lead of 377 over Australia at close.

The two old timers Broad and James Anderson are at the crease. We have not heard any news of a declaration yet so as it stands they will stride out to bat together for one last time.

Chuffed to bits for Stuart Broad to be able to end his incredibly successful career on his own terms. TMS need to snap him up fast, he'd be a quality pundit.

It feels like the perfect time for him.

Very few sportsmen get to choose when they leave. Often they don’t get to leave when they’re at the top of their game.

He’s had a brilliant series, he’s taken 20 wickets. He is at the top of his game and he could carry on but he’s always had it in his mind that this is how he’d want to go.

He’s been a brilliant performer for England, far better than I think he ever imagined and today is a day of celebration rather than any form of sadness.

    Andy Zaltzman
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

England finish the series with six players having scored 300 runs or more – a unique achievement for England in any Ashes series, and for either side in a five-Test Ashes series in England (Australia had six 300-plus-runs players in the six-Test series in both 1989 and 1993).

Without scurrying off to Statsguru to check, can you guess (to one decimal place) the average number of England players per series who have reached the 300-run mark in the previous 38 series, since 1950?

  9. 'Ever the entertainer'published at 08:50 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

Malcolm Conn in the Sydney Morning Herald, external said:

Ever the entertainer, Stuart Broad’s retirement announcement was an upbeat occasion delivered with flourish and flair as Australia’s chief tormentor said goodbye to his 16-year Test career midway through the fifth and final Test at the Oval.

Son of former England opening batsman Chris Broad, who is now a match referee, Stuart Broad was besotted by cricket from a young age and began his journey as a schoolboy in his father’s footsteps batting at the top of the order.

He has an incredible record. Across 265 first class matches over 18 years, he has taken 950 wickets, with 602 of them across 167 Tests and the chance to add more in Australia’s second innings. He’s been part of nine Ashes series since 2009, playing 40 Tests and claiming 151 wickets, more than any other bowler in history against Australia.

  10. 'Ever the pantomime villain'published at 08:45 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

Daniel Cherny in the Australian, external says:

Ever the pantomime villain, Broad has been a regular tormentor of Australia, delivering telling spells across multiple Ashes series.

His 8-15 at Trent Bridge in the 2015 Ashes was his piece de resistance, but his first critical intervention came with a five-wicket haul in the decisive fifth Test of the 2009 series.

An ironman, Broad has played in every home Ashes Test across five straight series.

Perhaps Broad’s most famous Ashes involvement came in 2013 when he infamously stood his ground after edging Ashton Agar to slip during the first Test at Nottingham.

Broad became an instant public enemy in Australia and was abused relentlessly by Australian crowds the following summer, seemingly taking it all in his stride.

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport chief cricket writer at The Oval

Stuart Broad is the premature baby who grew up to become a fearsome fast bowler.

The 37-year-old has taken 602 wickets in 167 Tests, making him the second most successful paceman in Test history behind team-mate James Anderson.

  18. Broad at his bestpublished at 08:18 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

Stuart Broad said he wanted to go out at the top and he has certainly done that.

He has taken 20 wickets in the series, the most by an England player, and became just the second England player after James Anderson to reach 600 Test wickets when he removed Travis Head during the fourth Test at Old Trafford.

  19. 'What a competitor. What a cricketer. What a bowler'published at 08:14 British Summer Time 30 July 2023

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport chief cricket writer at The Oval

Always a man for the big moment, Stuart Broad has seized another.

In announcing his decision to retire from all cricket, the consummate performer created a little more theatre.

With the evening sun shining at The Oval, Broad was still in his England shirt and had only just removed his pads. Unbeaten with the bat and with a bowling day still to come, Broad said after the fifth Ashes Test there will be no more.

There will be one last crack at the Australians, one more chance to knock over David Warner, one final match to win. He might even club some runs. There will not be a dry eye in the house.
